Concerns about inflation and interest rates are now at a two-year high, according to a recent report by credit reporting agency TransUnion. Although Americans have seen their buying power rise amid cooling inflationary data and a strong job market, 84% of all adults still rank inflation among their top concerns, followed by housing prices and interest rates, TransUnion's consumer pulse study found. "There continues to be positive progress against bringing down inflation," said Charlie Wise, senior vice president and head of global research and consulting at TransUnion. Relief for those hardest hitMeanwhile, the Federal Reserve's string of 11 rate hikes since 2022, coupled with higher inflation, have hit working-class Americans particularly hard. Many of these households have exhausted their savings and are now increasingly leaning on credit cards to make ends meet.

The plea deal Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, has reached with prosecutors is bad for American press freedoms. Under the deal, he is expected to walk free after spending more than five years in British custody, most of which were spent fighting extradition to the United States. The result is an ambiguous end to a legal saga that has jeopardized the ability of journalists to report on military, intelligence or diplomatic information that officials deem secret. Enshrined in the First Amendment, the role of a free press in bringing to light information beyond what those in power approve for release is a foundational principle of American self-government. This new precedent will send a threatening message to national security journalists, who may be chilled in how aggressively they do their jobs because they will see a greater risk of prosecution.

France could only come second in Group D at Euro 2024 after a 1-1 draw with Poland in Dortmund. AdvertisementThe second half started in a similar manner, before a penalty in the 56th minute — scored by Kylian Mbappe, in his mask — gave France the lead. The theme continued in the second half as Skorupski was initially a match for everything that France threw at him, making seven saves in total. It took a penalty to finally beat him — Jakub Kiwior brought down Dembele and Mbappe sent Skorupski the wrong way. The other half, which awaited the team who finished second in Group D, has some of Euro 2024’s form teams — Portugal, Spain and Germany.

Shortly after Judge Aileen M. Cannon drew the assignment in June 2023 to oversee former President Donald J. Trump’s classified documents case, two more experienced colleagues on the federal bench in Florida urged her to pass it up and hand it off to another jurist, according to two people briefed on the conversations. The judges who approached Judge Cannon — including the chief judge in the Southern District of Florida, Cecilia M. Altonaga — each asked her to consider whether it would be better if she were to decline the high-profile case, allowing it to go to another judge, the two people said. But Judge Cannon, who was appointed by Mr. Trump, wanted to keep the case and refused the judges’ entreaties. Her assignment drew attention because she has scant trial experience and had previously shown unusual favor to Mr. Trump by intervening in a way that helped him in the criminal investigation that led to his indictment, only to be reversed in a sharply critical rebuke by a conservative appeals court panel. The extraordinary and previously undisclosed effort by Judge Cannon’s colleagues to persuade her to step aside adds another dimension to the increasing criticism of how she has gone on to handle the case.

CNN —The US appears to have expanded its agreement with Ukraine to strike over the border inside Russian territory wherever Russian forces are engaging in cross-border attacks into Ukraine, not just in the Kharkiv region as was previously determined. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told PBS News on Monday that the agreement with Ukraine to fire into Russia extends wherever Russian forces are attempting to invade. “It extends to anywhere that Russian forces are coming across the border from the Russian side to the Ukrainian side to try to take additional Ukrainian territory,” Sullivan said, adding that it’s “not about geography. The change marks a significant shift in the limited nature of the agreement between the US and Ukraine. “Russia opened a new front, they opened the front in the north in Kharkiv, where they’re attacking directly from Russian territory just over the border.

His candidacy galvanized liberals to defend democracy and abortion rights, giving Democrats the edge in low-turnout special and midterm elections. Yet at the same time, early polls suggest, many less engaged and infrequent voters have grown deeply dissatisfied with Mr. Biden. The disengaged voters do not necessarily like Mr. Trump, the polling shows. Many low-turnout voters — notably including many who consider themselves Democrats — now say they’ll back Mr. Trump. Even if Mr. Trump holds his edge among the disengaged, it’s not clear many of these low-turnout voters will ultimately show up to vote.
