HONG KONG, April 26 (Reuters Breakingviews) - If Japan is the next Macau, $16 billion MGM Resorts International (MGM.N) may be the only winner left at the table. After years of debate and delays, Japan has finally given approval for a resort in Osaka. But as diversifying from China becomes a popular mantra, this big bet looks smarter than it once did. The 1.08 trillion yen ($8.1 billion) resort is set to open in 2029. U.S. casino operator MGM Resorts International and local partner Orix will each own a 40% stake in the company set up to manage the complex.
American Express posted earnings per share of $2.40 for the first quarter, below an estimate of $2.66, per Refinitiv. On Wednesday, the casino and resort company posted a beat on first-quarter earnings. The decline comes a day after Zions missed earnings expectations in the first quarter. The company posted earnings of $2.73 per share on revenue of $7.97 billion. The downgrade comes ahead of the defense firm's first quarter earnings report, which is set to release April 25.

The company reported adjusted earnings per share of $1.36, beating the consensus estimate of analysts polled by Refinitiv by 10 cents. For its fiscal fourth quarter, the company anticipates adjusted earnings of $5 per share and $3.1 billion in revenue. Zions reported earnings per share of $1.33, falling short of analysts' expectations of $1.53, according to Refinitiv. Alphabet preliminarily reported between $108 million and $109.5 million in first-quarter revenue, while analysts polled by FactSet estimated $101.6 million.

WASHINGTON, April 12 (Reuters) - The U.S. Commerce Department said on Wednesday it is imposing export controls on more than two dozen companies in China, Turkey and other countries for supporting Russia’s military and defense industries. Five Chinese entities, two Russian and two Turkish companies were named for attempting to evade export controls and acquiring, or attempting to acquire, U.S.-origin items in support of Russia’s military. The Chinese companies named include STK Electronics, Wynn Electronics Co, ETC Electronics Ltd, Avtex Semiconductor Limited, Yongli Electronic Components and Newsuntech Electronics Limited. "Export controls have hampered Russia’s ability to sustain, repair, and resupply its weaponry," the department said in February. Other companies named are based in Singapore, Spain, Syria, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and Uzbekistan.

First-quarter earnings per share for the S & P 500 are set to decline by 7% compared with the year-ago period, Goldman Sachs said in a note to clients Wednesday. That's why we spend less time worrying what the S & P 500 will earn and focus more on how individual companies are performing . Some S & P 500 sectors, like consumer discretionary and energy, are poised to grow profits compared with 2022, according to Goldman. Crude prices and oil stocks jumped Monday after OPEC+ members announced a surprise production cut, giving investors an opportunity to pare back their energy exposure. Oil prices rose more than 6% on Monday, with U.S. crude benchmark West Texas Intermediate climbing above $80 per barrel for the first time since early March. Halliburton (HAL) shares surged more than 8% Monday, to over $34 each, as the best-performing Club energy stock. Shares of Coterra Energy (CTRA), our energy stock most focused on natural gas, rose 2.3%. In the short run, Jim Cramer said, oil prices could certainly climb a bit higher, possibly back to the $90-per-barrel level.
Leonardo DiCaprio testified in a high-profile trial of Fugees member Pras Michel. Low helped finance the 2013 film "The Wolf of Wall Street" that DiCaprio starred in. Federal prosecutors claim Michel funneled money from Malaysian businessman and fugitive Jho Low to illegally contribute to President Barack Obama's 2012 reelection. The conspiracy and fraud trial of American rapper Pras Michel kicked off on Thursday. Prosecutors alleged that Michel was involved in an international scheme to influence the US government. Michel is accused of working with Malaysian businessman and fugitive Jho Low. "Low had money to burn and the defendant was willing to cash in at any turn," Lockhart said. McMaster, casino mogul Steve Wynn, and actor Leonardo DiCaprio, who starred in the 2013 film "The Wolf Of Wall Street" that Low helped fund.
