Colombian airlines Avianca, Viva appeal against merger denial
  + stars: | 2022-11-24 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
BOGOTA, Nov 23 (Reuters) - Colombian airlines Avianca and Viva have appealed to the aviation regulator after it denied their plan to merge, proposing steps to allay its concerns, such as yielding some routes to competitors, the companies said on Wednesday. In an April agreement to merge the airlines envisaged retaining their respective brands and business strategies as the travel sector struggled with the COVID-19 pandemic. But the governing body of Colombia's civil aviation regulator objected, saying the merger posed risks to competition and the best interests of consumers. The airlines also expressed interest in working with state-owned Satena to boost links to Colombia's most remote regions. Avianca said the appeal and measures it was proposing would improve Viva's finances, yielding benefits for employees and suppliers.
Google, Activision and Riot did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the new filing. Epic last year mostly lost a similar case against Apple Inc (AAPL.O), the other leading app store provider. The deal with Activision was announced in January 2020, soon after it told Google it was considering launching its own app store. Google around the same time was forecasting billions of dollars in lost app store sales if developers fled to alternative systems. Epic's lawsuit alleged that Google knew signing with Activision "effectively ensured that (Activision) would abandon its plans to launch a competing app store, and Google intended this result."

TCI's stake represents 0.27% of outstanding Alphabet shares, according to Factset data, a position that the hedge fund has steadily accumulated since 2017. TCI noted that headcount has "increased at an annual rate of 20% since 2017," the year that TCI first disclosed their Alphabet position. TCI argued for an increase in share buybacks and the establishment of an EBIT margin target for Google Services. Significantly, TCI argued that Google's "Other Bets" category – their Moonshot division – demanded immediate attention, singling out self-driving vertical Waymo as a unit that failed to justify "its excessive investment." Alphabet shares are down more than 30% year-to-date.
An early mover in the electric car race, Renault has fallen behind newer, more agile rivals like Tesla. But big question marks remain on its strained relationship with long-standing Japanese partner Nissan, as Renault looks for other outside investors for each of its divisions. Nissan (7201.T) is expected to take a stake in the EV venture, codenamed "Ampere", alongside other investors, though Renault will keep a majority stake. Renault CEO Luca De Meo said the group wanted to give the alliance a strong future and a "new chance". Aside from the Ampere EV unit and the combustion engine division, Renault will have an additional three businesses - the Alpine sports-car brand, financial services and new mobility and recycling activities.

REUTERS/Charles Platiau(Reuters) - Alphabet Inc’s Google said on Tuesday it would buy about three-quarters of the renewable power from SB Energy Global’s Texas facilities, as it aims to operate data centers on carbon-free energy by 2030. Companies are rapidly shifting toward clean energy and transportation as they look to meet environmental and sustainability goals. The $430-billion Inflation Reduction Act signed by President Joe Biden signed in August also seeks to incentivise a shift to clean energy, by providing tax credits. Google will use the energy from the SoftBank Group Corp-backed company, which will have a capacity of about 3 GW by early next year, to power data centers in Texas, Alphabet said. SB Energy’s Orion 1, 2 and 3 and Eiffel solar projects which total nearly 1.2 gigawatts (GW) of capacity are expected to be ready to supply power by mid-2024.

REUTERS/Benoit Tessier/File PhotoCompanies L'Oreal SA FollowOct 24 (Reuters) - L'Oreal SA (OREP.PA) has been sued by a Missouri woman who alleges she developed uterine cancer as a result of using the French cosmetic company's hair-straightening products. The lawsuit, filed Friday in federal court in Chicago, came days after a study from the U.S. National Institute of Environmental Health Safety (NIEHS) finding that hair-straightening products may significantly increase the risk of uterine cancer among frequent users. The plaintiff, Jennifer Mitchell, said she was diagnosed with uterine cancer in 2018, after using L'Oreal's products since about 2000, when she was 10. Uterine cancer is the most common gynecologic cancer in the United States, according to federal government data, with rates rising, particularly among Black women. ROME, Oct 19 (Reuters) - An Italian appeals court has acquitted the parents of former prime minister Matteo Renzi on charges of issuing false invoices. "After years of struggle and pain, my parents were acquitted," Renzi said in a tweet. "I do not wish anyone to live through what my parents had to live through, they did not deserve so much hate. At the last national election on Sept. 25, Renzi teamed up with the Azione party led by Carlo Calenda and got about 8% of the vote. The lower court handed a third defendant, businessman Luigi Dagostino, a two-year term for having accepted bogus invoices.
Reyes said Hollywood films often reflected the politics of their time — and that had an influence on Latino roles. Studies by the Government Accountability Office, the University of Southern California and other groups consistently show that Latinos are underrepresented in the film industry. Just this year, UCLA’s Hollywood Diversity Report documented “enormous gains” by women and people of color, but Latino representation still lagged. Slowly but surely, we are shaking up the narrative in Hollywood.”Calderón is frustrated by the continuing practice of “brownface,” whereby Latino roles go to white actors. Sanchez cited Eugenio Derbez in “Coda” (2021) as an example of a well-written Latino film character.
"LVMH's 3Q22 print will likely reassure on the health of the high-end consumer in the run-up to the festive season," said Thomas Chauvet of Citi. He said he had seen no signs that lower product categories were underperforming -- a category that has been closely eyed for signs of weakness. Analysts have been on the look out for signs of weakness in more aspirational products as younger shoppers face rising living costs. Guiony flagged a strong performance in watches -- luxury products that tend to do well in an inflationary environment because they hold their value. Hermes and Kering (PRTP.PA) report third quarter sales on Oct. 20.
Latinos are underrepresented in the media industry workforce across film, radio, television, newspapers and digital platforms, according to the report. Latinos are 19% of the nation's population, almost 1 in 5 Americans, and 18% of workers outside the media industry. The largest percentage of Hispanic media industry workers were employed in service worker positions (19%) — which include food, cleaning and personal and protective services, according to the latest available reports submitted by media companies to the U.S. In positions that can influence the content audiences consume, Latinos were far less represented: They made up only 7% of professional media industry positions such as actors, producers, directors, writers, reporters and editors. When Latinos did see themselves represented in content, they felt "it was inaccurate" in most cases, de Armas said.
