Each year hundreds of millions of packages, mostly from Chinese platforms, are sent directly to American consumers eager to take advantage of rock-bottom prices on clothing, electronics and other products. That could mean painful times ahead for the Chinese sellers that supply the platforms — and higher prices for American consumers. The son of the man accused of plotting to assassinate former President Donald Trump at his golf course has been arrested in connection with a child sex abuse images case. Oran Alexander Routh was charged in federal court Monday with one count of receipt of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography. The criminal complaint filed against Oran Routh states that his North Carolina home was searched in connection to an unrelated case. The complaint also said investigators found a messaging app on the phone that is "commonly used by individuals who distribute and receive child pornography." Court records show that Oran Routh is in federal custody.

It may be early to get the Halloween decorations out for most, but in the deep waters of the Pacific Ocean spooky season is well underway. Scientists said Tuesday they had discovered a new species of ghost shark that lives exclusively in the waters off Australia and New Zealand. The Australasian Narrow-nosed Spookfish was found during research surveys in the Chatham Rise, an area of ocean floor to the east of New Zealand, according to the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) based in Auckland. Ghost sharks, also known as chimaeras, are a group of cartilaginous fish closely related to sharks and rays. This long-nosed spookfish was better researched among its kind as it is often observed on research surveys and is caught incidentally in commercial fisheries, Finucci said.

Missouri is set Tuesday to execute Marcellus Williams, a death row inmate whose case has spurred several efforts to save his life amid doubts about the evidence presented at his 2001 murder trial and the actions of a trial lawyer in the case. The attorneys are asking for the court to either find that those actions violated Williams’ rights or have a lower court address those issues. CNN —A US Navy replenishment ship sustained damage while operating in the Middle East in an incident that remains under investigation, according to a Navy official. The USNS Big Horn was damaged after the ship refueled and replenished Navy vessels operating in the region, including the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and several guided-missile destroyers. The Navy official would not say where the incident occurred or what type of damage the replenishment oiler sustained. The USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group has been operating in and around the Gulf of Oman in an effort to send a message of deterrence to Iran. All crew members on board the ship are safe, and US 5th Fleet, which controls Navy operations in the Middle East, is assessing the situation, the official added.

CNN —The company that built and operated the Titan submersible asked employees to forego their pay as it faced economic challenges, according to former employees testifying before the US Coast Guard panel probing the vessel’s deadly implosion last year. OceanGate employees were asked to “defer our paychecks” at the start of 2023, Amber Bay, the company’s former director of administration, said Tuesday as part of a two-week hearing before the Marine Board of Investigation – the highest level of Coast Guard inquiry. The board is reviewing the cause of the June 2023 implosion during the submersible’s dive to the Titanic, which claimed the life of OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush and four others.
