President Biden announced on Sunday that he was dropping out of the presidential race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to replace him as the Democratic nominee. If you are a woman and are planning to vote in the November election, New York Times journalists would like to know your thoughts. We won’t publish any part of our response without following up with you first, verifying your information and hearing back from you.

The Israeli diplomat Abba Eban once remarked that “men and nations behave wisely when they have exhausted all other resources.” The line (a version of which is often misattributed to Winston Churchill) could hardly fit President Biden better. But it would also be more than a little misleading. The truth is that for months, if not years, the president, his family, and his senior advisers deceived the country about the extent of his mental deterioration. Dean Phillips, the Minnesota congressman, first saw it back in 2021, when Biden went to Capitol Hill and “had trouble articulating his own agenda,” as The Times’s Peter Baker noted this week. Phillips’s Democratic colleagues saw it, too, but said nothing.

Patrick Healy: Michelle, Lydia, Ross and David, I’ll cut to the chase: Is the Democratic Party making a mistake by quickly going all in on Kamala Harris as its likely presidential nominee? As a child growing up in the U.K., Mitchell always knew he wanted to be an actor. But because his family couldn't afford to send him to drama school, he instead worked "part-time at a restaurant and in customer service at a local soccer club" and attended vocational school to study design and technology. His second try proved more successful and the experience in the drama group helped him score a part in 2015's short film "Fire". Without formal drama school training, Mitchell looks at every project he gets as an "opportunity" to improve his process. Within hours of Biden dropping out of the race and endorsing his vice president on Sunday, Trump’s campaign managers had released a blistering statement tying Harris to the administration’s policies. Instead, Trump’s team had orchestrated an exacting campaign around defeating Biden. But it was soon widely acknowledged within Trump’s camp that Biden bowing out would also throw their own campaign into uncertainty. Trump’s campaign also began privately ramping up and testing new lines of attack on Harris — someone they had largely ignored since she was sworn in as vice president. While polling has shown Harris is the best known among possible Democratic candidates to replace Biden, Trump’s advisers and allies maintain that most Americans don’t know much about her, creating an opening to define her to the public.

‘Twisters’ and the Appeal of the Sequel

That movie is “Twister,” the story of a lovably eclectic band of tornado chasers who follow soon-to-be-divorced Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt right into the eye of many storms. We got cows.”One friend said she watched it every single time she happened upon it on cable. As Janet Maslin wrote in The Times when the movie came out, “Somehow ‘Twister’ stays as uptempo and exuberant as a roller-coaster ride, neatly avoiding the idea of real danger.”This week, “Twisters,” a sequel to “Twister,” directed by Lee Isaac Chung, arrived in theaters. I didn’t have a deep-rooted relationship with the original film, but, fresh off my positive viewing experience, I didn’t feel like I needed another chapter. Why can’t we just make one good thing and then make another new thing that’s also good?

America’s Unstable Politics
  + stars: | 2024-07-19 | by ( David Leonhardt | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
American politics was more stable for the past half-century than it had been for most of the country’s history. But yesterday’s remarkable events — in both Washington and Milwaukee, among both Democrats and Republicans — showed how unstable our politics have become. Biden himself has begun to accept the idea that he may have to drop out of the race, people close to him told The Times. Trump gave a speech that was both personal and rambling and that highlighted how different he is from any other recent president. He also demonstrated how he transformed the party over the past decade into a populist-sounding, antiwar, immigration-skeptical movement that Ronald Reagan would hardly recognize.
