Now, I listen to Taylor Swift when I get my twice-yearly MRIs as part of my cancer screening. When I told her I was in my Taylor Swift era, she laughed and said I was going to be a big hit with the radiologist on call. MRIs are never pleasant, but they're better when Taylor Swift is playingWe were sitting in the makeshift triage area, a small room with no windows. Then, as I slid into the machine, "Blank Space (Taylor's Version)" started playing through the speakers. I could barely hear "Blank Space (Taylor's Version)" over the noise of the MRI, which sounded like a back grader getting stuck on a dirt road.

My dad and I were once invincible dominoes partners, I was his frente, and he was my compiche, my wingman. When the domino table materialized at that time of the night at our family parties, he scanned the room looking for me until we locked eyes. I am not competitive, but I was driven to win, if only to see the fire in his eyes. The thrill of the domino smack on the table, as my soft-spoken papi yelled “Capicuá!” — he just knew he killed it. But when I was a teenager growing up in New Jersey, his unspoken love made me feel even more lonely in a family that always felt a little foreign to me.

As a single mother and professor, I struggled financially, so we moved into a rental on campus. My two daughters grew up on the college campus where I worked, and the students became mentors. As a single parent, I raised two daughters — now 24 and 18 — in a tiny campus rental with a view of a white barn and sloping mountains. A pragmatic horticulturist, he'd watched my children walk through his yard to the bus stop each morning. I ordered Cracker Barrel 's Meatloaf n' Tenders family meal for my party of five. The meal fed my family with leftovers to spare and worked out to around $10 per person. AdvertisementI love to cook dinner for my family, but as a busy mom who works and homeschools my teenagers, it's always nice to get a break from the kitchen during the week. Recently, we tried one from Cracker Barrel. Here's what it was like to order, pick up, and eat a family meal from Cracker Barrel, and why I'd definitely order a to-go dinner from the chain again.

Go Big With Bibimbap

On Sunday, I like a project in the kitchen more than on any other day. It’s a chance to work at the stove without the need to get something on the table in 45 minutes, a time to stretch my skill set. Vivian Chan’s new recipe for bibimbap (above) suits beautifully. The dish traces its history to the last dynastic kingdom of Korea, the Josean, which lasted 500 years. It’s a showstopper of a meal with loads of components: a flavorful mixture of rice topped with bulgogi, shiitake mushrooms, bean sprouts, spinach, carrots and cucumbers, drizzled with a spicy gochujang sauce.

When real-estate investors talk about "turnkey" rental properties, they mean a unit that is already habitable and ready to rent out. That's what Texas-based real-estate investor Aaron Logan expected when he bought several turnkey rental properties over the last five years or so. Since Logan bought it, he's had to replace the HVAC unit, the roof, and the sump pump. Logan said he trusted that the turnkey marketing company he was working with knew that the turnkey seller would be quality. "You need a good agent, a good need a good property manager, you need a good contractor — there are other ways to track that down other than using a turnkey company," Logan said.

When Brock Forsblom and Jeremy Heimans first saw their future apartment, “it was the SoHo loft fantasy,” says Heimans, 46, an Australian entrepreneur and nonfiction writer. The rest of the former factory building, which was constructed in 1900 and at one time produced long underwear, is still inhabited by “septuagenarian artists,” Heimans says. In the pair’s previous apartment, a West Village rental, almost every surface, including the curtains and bathroom ceiling, was decorated with a vibrant pattern. “The energy there was that I had a thousand ideas,” says Forsblom, 38, who until recently worked as an interior designer. Ng brought in his colleague Jacob Esocoff as a collaborator — eventually resulting in the launch of their own firm, Ideas of Order, in late 2021.

There's actually a reason — and it has to do with the same avian flu outbreak that made eggs so expensive last year. AdvertisementLast year, egg prices went through the roof, with prices more than doubling in certain US states. Because so many chickens died from the flu, egg producers had to adapt. The good news is that egg prices have normalized, thankfully (although they're still more expensive than 2019). That means the worst of the flu outbreak is over, and production is back up.

A massive fire raced through a six-storey building in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka late on Thursday, killing at least 43 people and injuring dozens, the country’s health minister said. The fire originated in a restaurant and quickly spread to other floors, fire service officials said. At least 43 people have died and 22 others are being treated at hospitals with burn wounds, Health Minister Samanta Lal Sen told reporters after visiting the Dhaka Medical College Hospital. It was not immediately clear what caused the blaze, which was under control after two hours of frantic efforts by 13 firefighting units, the fire service officials said. Firefighters used a crane to rescue people from the charred building, the fire service officials said.

The Cooking app, along with Games, The Athletic, and Wirecutter, have bolstered the company's subscription business by providing different entry points. The "All Access" bundle strategy also lets the Times leverage upticks in demand for different types of content depending on the time of year (such as the winter holidays, which are peak cooking times) or news cycles. Cooking has learned that newer users perceive Times recipes as taking longer than they say.

Panera Bread is overhauling its menu

New York CNN —Panera Bread is undergoing its “largest menu transformation ever,” shifting away from its attempt at dinner and refocusing on what it’s best known for, like sandwiches and salads. Panera didn’t release a full list of the menu items that are getting the axe, other than confirming that the flatbreads it introduced in 2019 are being eliminated. Panera confirmed that the kitchen sink cookie, kids menu and soufflés are staying. Panera teased that more details about that menu changes will be unveiled in March. Panera is also aiming to lure in budget-conscious customers with some of the new menu items being priced under $10.

The popular frozen waffle brand Eggo has unveiled the Eggo House of Pancakes, a home that has received a makeover both inside and out to make it appear like a stack of flapjacks. The Gatlinburg, Tenn. home will be available to prospective guests beginning Feb. 28 — also known as National Pancake Day. The kitchen at the Eggo House of Pancakes comes stocked with an assortment of the brand's products. Guests at the House of Pancakes will arrive to a fully-stocked fridge full of Eggo pancakes. I mean steakhouses like House of Prime Rib in San Francisco, Hal’s in Atlanta and Bern’s in Tampa, Fla. Every great American city has one; really great American cities have at least two or three. This kind of steakhouse revels in dinner theater. In House of Prime Rib, for instance, a chef in a tall, pleated paper hat pushes a steel cart stocked with the finest cuts of beef around the restaurant as if he were manning a float in a parade. He stops so the patrons can fawn over the meat, and then dramatically carves the cut with an oversize blade.

The expansion of government-subsidized housing loans meant that cheap space was also easy to come by, as New York had a then-ample stock of residential and industrial buildings. But the city has always romanticized artist-dominated buildings, the kinds of communal spaces in which every unit might be home to an artist’s studio (and sometimes, unofficially, their residences, too). In an almost unheard-of feat of perseverance, the same artist, Don Dudley, 93, has been working out of this loft since 1971. So artists have had to create a kind of whisper network to withstand New York’s unimpeachable forward march, which the art market has, ironically, enabled. Most of them are temporary fixes before an artist — who’s grown out, or been priced out, of their space — has to move on.
