CNN —The House Ethics Committee announced Tuesday that it will continue to investigate certain allegations surrounding Rep. Matt Gaetz, including whether the Florida Republican engaged in sexual misconduct, while ending other portions of the probe. In a rare statement updating its work, the bipartisan committee stated some of the allegations against Gaetz “merit continued review” and it has “also identified additional allegations” that warrant investigating. But McCarthy has repeatedly denounced those accusations and has said Gaetz worked to oust him because of the ethics probe. In late 2020, under Trump-appointed Attorney General Bill Barr, the Justice Department opened an investigation into allegations Gaetz may have had sexual contact with a minor. A source familiar with the House panel’s work previously told CNN that the Justice Department’s decision not to bring charges against Gaetz does not impact what the committee will and won’t investigate.

NextEra Energy stock fell nearly 5% in early trading Tuesday after announcing a plan to sell $2 billion in equity units to finance power projects as electricity demand rises and to pay back debt. The Florida-based power company, which operates the largest portfolio of renewable energy in the U.S., will issue equity units for $50, which will serve as a contract to purchase shares no later than June 1, 2027. The utility sector has gained about 8.5% over the past three months, outpacing the 6.2% gain by the S&P 500. But the utility space has cooled off over the past month, with NextEra falling 5% over that period. About 71% of Wall Street analysts rate NextEra as the equivalent of buy, while 24% have put a hold on the stock and 4.8% have recommended that investors sell.

The decision followed an internal investigation into the former deputy, Eddie Duran. A separate criminal investigation into the deputy’s actions is ongoing with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Mr. Fortson did not commit any crime. He joined the sheriff’s office again in June 2023.
