DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) — Artificial intelligence is easily the biggest buzzword for world leaders and corporate bosses diving into big ideas at the World Economic Forum’s glitzy annual meeting in Davos. In a sign of ChatGPT maker OpenAI’s skyrocketing profile, CEO Sam Altman is making his Davos debut to rock star crowds, with his benefactor, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, hot on his heels. The small Swiss Alpine town is again playing host to the World Economic Forum (WEF), where the world's top brass in finance and politics convene each year to try to solve the biggest problems that plague our planet. But the long and winding road to Davos offers another lesser-known benefit, which makes the lengthier commute well worth the while. Here's what was overheard on the connecting trains from Zurich Airport to Davos Platz. OpenAI's media representative declined CNBC's request to interview Altman in Davos, citing a "tight" schedule. Roger Lynch, Condé Nast’s chief executive, told senators that current AI models were built using “stolen goods,” with chatbots scraping and displaying news articles from publishers without their permission or compensation. News organizations, Lynch said, seldom have a say in whether their content is used to train AI or is output by the models. To avoid the pilfering of news publishers’ content and, thereby, their coffers, Lynch proposed AI companies use licensed content and compensate publishers for content being used for training and output. Coffey also noted AI models have introduced inaccuracies and produced so-called hallucinations after scraping content from less-than-reputable sources — which runs the risk of misinforming the public or ruining a publication’s reputation. “The risk of low-quality [generative] AI content dominating the internet is amplified by the drastic economic decline of news publications over the past two decades,” Coffey said.

HR and recruitment teams are beginning to use AI tools in multiple stages of the hiring process. But beware: AI recruitment can still be riskyWhile AI technology is helping recruiters in many ways, there are some risks to consider and mitigate. In 2022, researchers at Cambridge University found that AI recruitment tools weren't capable of eradicating bias or boosting diversity during the hiring process. These problems often arise because of biased historical data used for training AI recruitment technologies, Maynard said. Jackson recommended that companies develop strict policies governing the use of AI hiring tools and provide their recruitment teams with bias training.

In recent months, the campaign has spun up the internal task force, dubbed the “Social Media, AI, Mis/Disinformation (SAID) Legal Advisory Group,” part of a broader effort across the campaign to counter all forms of disinformation, TJ Ducklo, a senior adviser to the Biden campaign, told CNN. It aims to have enough prepared to be able to run a campaign-wide tabletop exercise in the first half of 2024. Existing US election law prohibits campaigns from “fraudulently misrepresenting other candidates or political parties,” but whether this prohibition extends to AI-generated content is an open question. Any political advertiser that uses deepfakes in ads on Facebook or Instagram will need to disclose that fact, it said. The Meta report details how some social media platforms are grappling with how to handle deceptive uses of AI.

The network of nearly 4,800 fake accounts was attempting to build an audience when it was identified and eliminated by the tech company, which owns Facebook and Instagram. The accounts sported fake photos, names and locations as a way to appear like everyday American Facebook users weighing in on political issues. Meta often points to its efforts to shut down fake social media networks as evidence of its commitment to protecting election integrity and democracy. But critics say the platform's focus on fake accounts distracts from its failure to address its responsibility for the misinformation already on its site that has contributed to polarization and distrust. But 2024 poses new challenges, according to experts who study the link between social media and disinformation.

(Full disclosure: I briefly hosted a television show for Sports Illustrated a few years back that no one watched.)
