About 90%, or $1.1 trillion, of that profit went to shareholders through stock buybacks and dividend payments, according to new research from anti-poverty organization Oxfam International. At the same time, the study found, only 10 of those 200 companies have made public statements in support of paying a living wage. For some of those companies, the average CEO-to-worker pay ratio is now above 1,500 to 1, the nonprofit confederation found. Oxfam’s study found that on average, pharmaceutical companies paid just 11.6% in taxes in 2022 (that’s down from 11.8% in 2021). Trump Media generated just $3.4 million of revenue through the first nine months of last year, according to SEC filings.

The US government's ballooning interest payments are eating a hole in its budget, they said. "We are headed toward record spending levels, record deficit levels, record debt levels, record interest payments — the list goes and on," Maya MacGuineas, the president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, told Fox Business this week. While the US isn't at imminent risk of that kind of chaos, bond markets could "snap back" if the government's interest payments soar to $1 trillion in 2026 as expected, Swagel said. AdvertisementHowever, she noted that some experts on Wall Street were "incredibly worried" about the national debt and interest payments. DoubleLine Capital CEO Jeffrey Gundlach has also sounded the alarm on debt payments.

Like Frieden, they're having a hard time finding what they need on the market. Frieden says she's surprised developers aren't doing more to meet the demand, particularly at the higher end of the market. Empty-nest boomers now own twice as many large homes as millennials with kids do, according to a recent Redfin analysis. This is making it even harder for millennials and households with kids to break into the market or upsize their homes. AdvertisementThis misallocation of housing — and shortage of larger condos and apartments — will become increasingly urgent as boomers age in homes that aren't ideal — or even safe — for them.

The lockdown saw sales of sewing machines soar and stock sell out. Existing home prices should keep climbing when mortgage rates slide, Bank of America said. The number of existing home sales on offer fell last year as mortgage rates rose and sellers opted to wait it out to hold onto lower rates they locked in years ago. "As of January, the median sales price of existing single-family homes had grown 5% y/y, while the price for new single-family homes fell 3% y/y." AdvertisementSo far in 2024, mortgage rates have come down from multi-year highs seen last October, falling to 6.74% this month. January's existing home sales were the highest since August, and even small declines in mortgage rates are enough to encourage bursts of activity.

Max was always a shy kid, slow to warm up to new people and content to spend long stretches on his own. But when he got to school in the morning, it was like a curtain came down between him and the world. A new subject came along in those pandemic years to once again capture his imagination: birds. Maybe creatures that could fly and soar were an appealing notion during endless lockdowns, or maybe birds were just another vast universe for him to map. Max borrowed bird books from the library and lay in bed reading them, absorbing facts and patterns, gathering arcane knowledge.

CNN —Liverpool’s chances of a historic quadruple in Jürgen Klopp’s final season at the club are over after falling to a 4-3 extra time defeat against bitter rival Manchester United in a frenetic FA Cup quarterfinal. Goals from Scott McTominay, Antony, Marcus Rashford and Amad Diallo gave United the win in a topsy-turvy FA Cup classic at Old Trafford in Manchester. “The first 35 minutes I think was the best minutes from our season,” United manager Erik ten Hag told the ITV broadcast after the game. In a game as hectic as this though, no lead was ever truly safe, as United proved in the second half of extra time. United fans were treated to a win in a chaotic cup tie.

While some music critics praised Knowles' country tracks, other fans of the genre refrained from a warm welcome. Beyond just radio, Black artists and artists of color represented less than 4% of country songs played on the radio, airplay, charting songs, artists signed to major labels and award nominations, according to SongData. One such fan, Tenley Patterson, 26, said she didn't bother listening to country music before Beyoncé's releases, but was impressed with the country tracks. Rachel Whitney, head of editorial for the Nashville team, said playlists outside of the country genre are playing Knowles' country tracks, broadening its reach. The Beyoncé draw is also boosting exposure for other artists on some lists, like Lainey Wilson and Cody Johnson, who have more "traditional" country songs, Whitney said.

Sen. Bernie Sanders and Senate Democrats cited advances in artificial intelligence and automation Thursday as they argued for a new bill that would mandate a 32-hour federal workweek. "The sad reality is Americans now work more hours than the people of any other wealthy nation," the Vermont independent later said. The bill introduced by the committee chair Sanders and Sen. Laphonza Butler, D-Calif., would gradually reduce the standard workweek from 40 hours to 32 hours over four years. Sanders and Democrats at Thursday's hearing said that reducing the workweek would allow people to spend more time with family and on hobbies. "This would be napalm upon the fire of inflation," said Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, and the ranking Republican on the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.
