Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign on Saturday said it would accepted an invitation to participate in a second debate with former President Donald Trump. The potential debate would take place on Oct. 23 and be hosted by CNN, Harris campaign chair Jennifer O’Malley Dillon said in a statement. “The American people deserve another opportunity to see Vice President Kamala Harris and Donald Trump debate before they cast their ballots,” O’Malley Dillon said, adding, “Donald Trump should have no problem agreeing to this debate. O’Malley Dillon’s statement comes after Trump and Harris met for their first debate on Sept. 10, which was hosted by ABC. An Oct. 23 debate would pit Trump and Harris against each other less than two weeks before Election Day, but weeks into early voting in multiple states.

“President Putin has a good sense of humor. The Ukrainian leader said he also hoped to meet Trump, the Republican presidential candidate. Zelenskyy said in August he wanted to present his plan to Biden, Harris, and Trump. While Trump and Zelenskyy talked over the phone in July, they have not met in person since Trump’s 2017-2021 term. Russian intelligence services are building up their presence in Mexico for spy operations targeting the United States, a return to Cold War tactics by an increasingly aggressive regime, according to U.S. officials and former intelligence officers. The Mexican Embassy and the Russian Embassy did not respond to a request for comment. “Part of this is a function of the fact that so many Russian intelligence officers have been kicked out of Europe. Those are Russian intelligence personnel, and they keep an eye very closely on their opportunities to have influence on U.S. opportunities and access,” VanHerck said. Russian intelligence could conceivably also take advantage of Mexico’s proximity to target Putin’s political enemies inside the U.S., former intelligence officers said.

When Vice President Kamala Harris took the reins of the Democratic nomination in late July, something happened in North Carolina. Part of the Harris campaign strategy in North Carolina, according to a campaign official, includes attempting to bulk up turnout not just among Black voters but among women in and around the suburbs. For the week after Harris became the presumptive nominee, there was a 61.5% increase in voter registration among North Carolina women. Bonier takes all of this to point to a higher turnout of Democratic voters in North Carolina. “The way you win statewide in North Carolina,” he said, “is you win on the margins.”

A California firefighter was arrested on suspicion of arson in a series of small fires that burned in wine country in recent weeks, officials said Friday. Robert Hernandez, 38, was accused of setting five fires between Aug. 15 and Sept. 14 while off-duty, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire, said in a news release. Hernadez, a Cal Fire apparatus engineer, allegedly ignited the blazes around Geyserville, Healdsburg and Windsor, the department said. More than 4 million acres burned across the state in 2020, setting a record for the largest number of acres burned in California in modern times, the department said. So far this year, nearly one million acres have burned, including fast-moving blazes in Southern California that threatened tens of thousands of homes and prompted thousands of evacuations in the foothills of San Bernardino County.

A long road It's been a long and winding road for Waymo since its inception in 2009 as Google's self-driving car project. The robotaxi service now has about 700 autonomous vehicles on the road across its markets. That changed about a year ago , when Uber added Waymo vehicles to its app. In February, Waymo recalled 444 of its vehicles after two Waymo vehicles hit a towed pickup truck in Phoenix. Vice President Kamala Harris substantially outraised and outspent former President Donald Trump in August, ending the month with more cash to fund her final sprint to the November election, according to new filings from the Federal Election Commission. The Harris campaign raised over $189 million in August, more than quadruple the $44 million sum that the Trump campaign brought in. The Harris campaign announced earlier this month a total $361 million August haul from campaign donations joint with the Democratic National Committee and fundraising committees. That dwarfed the $130 million raised between the Trump campaign and its joint fundraising committees. The Harris campaign on Saturday accepted an invitation from CNN to hold a second debate on Oct. 23, but Trump has so far staunchly maintained that he will not do a rematch.

The closing price for DJT took extra time to pinpoint, as high trading volume resulted in delayed settling. The lockup agreement first took effect when Trump Media went public in March, following a merger with a blank-check firm called Digital World Acquisition Corp., or DWAC. Trump, whose 114,750,000 share stake in Trump Media was worth $1.5 billion at Friday’s close, said last week that he would not sell his shares when the restrictions lifted. Trump Media on Friday closed at its lowest closing level since debuting on the Nasdaq in March, closing the day at a price of $13.55 per share. In all of its updates since July 18, USMX has maintained that the union refuses to return to negotiations. Some lawmakers have called for more Secret Service funding, while others said the Secret Service could be more effective by shifting resources. But if it's signed into law, Trump and Harris would be granted the same standard of Secret Security protection as President Joe Biden. Biden said this week that the Secret Service "needs more help" and called on Congress to act. And both Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., have committed to getting the Secret Service what they need. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, said he wants the Secret Service to provide “clarification of what the current practices are” to confirm that.

Over the years, Israel has viewed “targeted killings” as a way to deter attacks on the county, fuel fear among its enemies and exact revenge. Iran’s nuclear program is closer to building a bomb than ever, even after several nuclear scientists were killed, he said. But the Mossad operation dismayed Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, who demanded the resignation of the spy service’s chief. Almost four decades later, Israel killed a major Hamas official, Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, in a Dubai hotel in a complex plot involving more than two dozen Mossad operatives. In an echo of this week’s attacks in Lebanon, Israel killed a Hamas bombmaker, Yahya Ayyash, in 1996 with a cellphone outfitted with explosives.

Pagers, devices that are used every day as a crucial form of communication for health care professionals, became a deadly weapon Tuesday as thousands of them simultaneously exploded in Lebanon, killing 37 people and injuring thousands. The explosions targeted the militant and political group Hezbollah, after the devices had reportedly begun beeping and heating up. Pagers are wireless communication devices that receive radio signals from short- or long-range paging networks. The pagers that exploded in Lebanon were made to appear as if they were Gold Apollo’s AR-924 pagers, but The New York Times reported that they were actually created by Israeli intelligence workers. Following the explosions on Tuesday, Hezbollah told Al Jazeera that the “treacherous and criminal enemy will certainly be punished for this aggressive act.”How did the pagers explode?

An initial DNA test on remains believed to be those of Joseph Couch, the suspect in the Interstate 75 shootings, was inconclusive, but an autopsy confirmed the cause of death was a self-inflicted gunshot wound, state officials said. The soft tissue DNA test was “inconclusive due to extreme decomposition of the body,” and a further DNA test with material extracted from bone will be completed, the Kentucky Justice and Public Safety Cabinet said in a news release. The remains were found in deep brush by a highway exit in Laurel County, which is where London is and where the shootings occurred, state officials said. A couple livestreaming the search for Couch's body helped in the effort and the discovery, state police said. The DNA test from bone is expected to begin Friday and take 24 to 48 hours, the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet said.

Oil prices set to end week higher after U.S. rate cut
  + stars: | 2024-09-20 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
Oil prices, which were little changed in early Asian trade on Friday, were on track to end higher for a second straight week following a large cut in U.S. interest rates and declining global stockpiles. Brent futures , which were trading 19 cents or 0.3% lower at $73.69 a barrel at 0027 GMT on Friday, gained 4.3% this week. The U.S. central bank cut interest rates by half a percentage point on Wednesday. Weak demand from China's slowing economy was weighing on prices, with refinery output in China slowing for a fifth month in August. China's industrial output growth also slowed to a five-month low last month, and retail sales and new home prices weakened further.

HSBC in a Sept. 17 report examined the relationship between Fed rate cuts and copper and aluminum prices over the past 30 years. In its base case, Citi sees copper prices averaging $9,000 per ton for the rest of this year, citing U.S. election uncertainty and weak manufacturing sentiment. Energy Citi anticipates that oil will suffer renewed price weakness in 2025, with Brent falling to around $60 a barrel. Based on what happened in 2019, trade tariffs lowered global oil demand growth by 0.2 million barrels a day. A slowdown in China, among the world's largest importer and consumer of oil, has been blamed on slowing global oil demand.
