Almost all the 15 Black officers at the police department in Knoxville, Tennessee, have felt discriminated against, according to an external review of the department. Last year, the paper reported that department leadership had attempted to conceal an officer’s racist comments and deter a Black officer from making a complaint about the incident. “If you are a Black officer, you have to work five times harder, and officers will always second-guess you,” one anonymous officer says in the report. Black officers were also the least likely to say they felt there was a clear process for de-escalating problems internally. In recent years, amid many high-profile deaths of Black Americans at the hands of police, a significant number of Black officers have left some of the country’s largest departments.
"The mosquitoes are out there, and they’re biting," said Eric Jackson, the deputy director of the Lee County Mosquito Control Division. The Lee County Mosquito Control District, a special district in one of the communities hit hardest by Ian, employs about 100 workers, Jackson said. Anne Askew, a biologist in the Lee County Mosquito Control District's Larviciding Department, uses a microscope to identify mosquito species. Lee County Mosquito Control DistrictIn Lee County, where Fort Myers is located, mosquito counts in the traps began to spike about a week after Ian. Florida officials don’t think federal help will be necessary, though Hurricane Ian’s damage has created challenges for mosquito control workers.
The University of Wisconsin's police department is investigating after private photos of the women's volleyball team were shared online without their consent. The public university in Madison did not provide details about the photos and videos. Members of the team contacted the university's police department after learning that the photos were shared online, the athletics department said. "UWPD is investigating multiple crimes, including sharing sensitive photos without consent," the statement read. "UWPD is not investigating the volleyball student-athletes for wrongdoing in this matter."
Tim Michels, the Republican nominee in Wisconsin’s race for governor, can’t keep his messaging straight on abortion rights — a top issue in the state and nationally. But in recent days, he has done just that — offering support for policies less hard-line than the 1849 law, while continuing to insist his position hadn't changed. The remark stands in stark contrast to comments Michels made during the primary, too, when he called the law an “exact mirror" of his own personal position on abortion rights. While Michels’ latest comment appears to further soften his position on abortion, the governor doesn’t actually have the power to arrest or charge anyone under the 1849 or any other law. In September, just days after pledging to not soften his position, Michels said he would support an abortion ban that includes exceptions for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest.

(Joe Cavaretta/Sun Sentinel/Tribune News Service via Getty Images)Spirit Airlines shareholders have approved a takeover by JetBlue Airways after a six-month battle to create the country's fifth-largest carrier, a deal that now faces a high hurdle with federal regulators. In April, JetBlue made a $3.8 billion all-cash offer for Spirit, derailing Spirit's plan for a cash-and-stock deal to merge with Frontier Airlines . If the takeover is approved, JetBlue plans to do away with the Spirit brand, known for its ultra-low airfares and bare-bones service with fees for add-ons like carry-on bags. "This is an important step forward on our path to closing a combination that will create the most compelling national low-fare challenger to the dominant U.S. carriers," Spirit Airlines CEO Ted Christie said in a release.
Johnson has since said that he knew nothing of a fake elector scheme, which is now part of a sprawling federal investigation. The Wisconsin lawsuit alleges that Troupis was a link between the Trump campaign and the fake electors, and allegedly relayed the strategy behind the scheme to Trump allies in Wisconsin. “He’s changed his story a couple of times on handing off fake electors to the vice president or trying to,” Franken said in an interview with NBC News. After Pence’s staff told Johnson’s aide not to give them the slate of electors Jan. 6, Johnson said he informed Troupis. At a recent event at the Milwaukee Rotary Club, Johnson was asked about his actions around Jan. 6.
Though many were shocked he didn’t receive the death penalty, and many victims’ family members were visibly upset by the decision, it’s wrong to assume this would have automatically brought them solace. The lengthy proceedings stirred up decades-old memories of waiting to find out whether my own mother’s murderer would receive the death penalty. It’s the prime example people use when they’re surprised to learn I’m not fervently in favor of the death penalty. Sometimes family members of victims do have clear-cut feelings that the death penalty is needed. It’s time for everyone in this country, from lawmakers to the general public, to prioritize the effect of the death penalty on a victim’s survivors over their own political ideologies.
Amy Beth Bennett/South Florida Sun Sentinel/Pool via REUTERSOct 13 (Reuters) - Jurors determined Thursday that Nikolas Cruz should be sentenced to death for a 2018 school shooting in Parkland, Florida, that killed 17 people. Jurors determined in at least one of the murders that there were aggravating factors that would support a death sentence, but in other cases they did not. Cruz, 24, had pleaded guilty last year to premeditated murder at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Under Florida law, a death sentence could only have been handed down if jurors had unanimously recommended he be executed. The Parkland shooting had led to renewed calls for tighter gun control in the United States.
Wisconsin LGBTQ History ProjectOn Oct. 5, the Milwaukee County Landmarks Committee held a public hearing to discuss four landmark nominations, including the site of the Black Nite. “A group of Navy trainees went to the Black Nite on a dare, they knew it was a gay bar. The Black Nite was targeted because it was a gay bar,” Buck said, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “I’ll never forget that as long as I live,” Carter told Takach. The Black Nite event, in addition to its effects on the state, may be the first recorded LGBTQ uprising in history, Takach said.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A U.S. Coast Guard ship on routine patrol in the Bering Sea came across a guided missile cruiser from China, officials said Monday. A C-130 Hercules provided air support for the Kimball from the Coast Guard station in Kodiak. The Coast Guard said Operation Frontier Sentinel guidelines call for meeting “presence with presence” when strategic competitors operate in and around U.S. waters. The Coast Guard did not immediately respond to questions about the incident from The Associated Press. In September 2021, Coast Guard cutters in the Bering Sea and North Pacific Ocean encountered Chinese ships, about 50 miles off the Aleutian Islands.
In this article ULCCJBLUSAVEwatch nowJetBlue Airways has reached a $3.8 billion deal to buy Spirit Airlines in a takeover that would create the country's fifth-largest airline and remove a fast-growing budget carrier from the market. Spirit lacked the shareholder support to win approval of the Frontier merger, which was first unveiled in February. If approved by regulators, JetBlue's takeover of Spirit would leave Frontier as the largest discount carrier in the U.S. It would also be the first major U.S. airline deal since 2016, when Alaska Airlines beat out JetBlue for Virgin America.

Corporate landlords in cities like Milwaukee helped drive an evictions crisis during the pandemic. Corporate landlords, which own almost 50% of rental properties, are more likely to evict, advocates say. Before the 2008 recession, corporate landlords owned 20% of rental properties; today, it's nearing a whopping 50%. Since the Center for Disease Control's evictions moratorium took effect last September, evictions by corporate landlords have actually been steadily increasing. There is no national database of evictions, and evictions are only tracked at the level of the country's more than 3,000 counties.
