Unlike with Biden, Harris won’t have to go back to the 1970s to come up with lines of attack. One speaker at a timeWhile Harris will have plenty to say about Trump, she won’t have the benefit of his interruptions. Prep can fall flatNot all of Harris’ planned takedowns work quite as well as the busing attack on Biden. In another 2019 debate, Harris targeted Sen. Elizabeth Warren on the subject of Warren’s plan to break up tech companies. Lines of attack against HarrisWhich brings us to a third telling Harris debate exchange from 2019.

Even with the financial burden his student debt has brought him, Larry said he has tried to remain optimistic about the prospect of debt relief, given President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris' actions during their term. Larry and millions of other student-loan borrowers will have to keep waiting. It's the same argument a different group of GOP states used that led the Supreme Court to strike down Biden's first attempt at broad debt relief last summer. Their arguments are based on internal documents the states obtained from the Education Department to federal student-loan servicers regarding preparation to implement its second try at broader debt relief. According to the documents, the Education Department sent a memo to MOHELA saying, "In September of 2024, the Biden-Harris Administration will launch the Federal Student Loan Debt Initiative."

That’s because employers might be putting some of their hiring plans on hold — and for good reason. Businesses consider many factors when deciding to hire, but across a wide spectrum of industries, the economic outlook carries always great deal of weight. Both those factors are prompting employers to think twice about hiring more workers now, according to economists and recent comments from businesses around the country. But she’s proposing raising the corporate tax rate to 28%. So when interest rates are as elevated as they are right now, monthly debt payments could be too costly for many firms.

Discussing the US southern border, Trump asserted that “more terrorists have come into the United States in the last three years. In fact, there have been no reported terrorist attacks in the US during the past three years carried out by jihadist terrorists crossing the southern border. The ordinarily voluble Trump typically doesn’t have much to say when far-right domestic terrorists perpetrate terrorism in the United States. To be sure, there are reasonable concerns about the southern border, like the fact that, as CNN reported in June, eight Tajikistan nationals in the US who had crossed the southern border were arrested on immigration charges “following the discovery of potential ties to terrorism,” including possibly to ISIS. This is all a far cry from Trump’s claim on Fox that “more terrorists have come into the United States in the last three years.

JD Vance's plan to tackle high childcare costs may not take into account the looming retirement crisis facing millions of older Americans. When Kirk asked how Vance planned to address the issue, Vance suggested extended family members step in to relieve the financial burden on parents. But he may have been referring to a new law in the nation's capital that requires many childcare workers to have a two-year associate degree, among other training. The letter was posted on the committee's Facebook page and on its account on the X social media platform on Monday. The Biden administration "pressured" Facebook parent Meta to "censor" content related to Covid-19, the social media giant's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg , alleged, adding that he regrets some of the decisions taken in relation to the U.S. government's requests. NBC News has reached out to the White House for comment Tuesday morning, but did not immediately receive a response. That year, the White House criticized social media firms, including Facebook, for allowing misinformation related to the coronavirus to spread across their platforms. Zuckerberg's letter underscores the ongoing debate about the extent to which social media firms should moderate content.

Researchers have begun measuring the impact of legalized sports gambling on American households, and the initial results paint a worrisome picture about how its expansion has affected bettors’ finances. In separate papers released this month, academics have found that households in states where gambling was legalized saw significantly reduced savings, as well as lower investments in assets like stocks that are generally considered more financially sound. Meanwhile, states that legalized sports betting saw their residents’ aggregate credit scores decrease, while bankruptcies increased. North Carolina became the most recent state to offer online sports betting earlier this year. Earlier this year, the major sports betting platforms formed the Responsible Online Gaming Association to address problem gambling.

Can the G.O.P. Really Become the Party of Workers?

The most surprising moment of this year’s Republican National Convention may have come on its first night, when the president of the Teamsters railed in prime time against corporate elites and denounced a “war against labor” by business groups. The gasps from some in the hall were almost audible on television. But in many ways, it was a little-noted speech the week before, by Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri, that was more revealing about the party’s evolving relationship with organized labor. If anything, Mr. Hawley, a rising Republican star who is one of the Senate’s most conservative members, seemed to outflank the Teamsters’ leader. His speech, delivered at the National Conservatism Conference, criticized Republicans who “cheerleaded for corporate tax cuts and low barriers for corporate trade, then watched these same corporations ship American jobs overseas.” Mr. Hawley concluded that, “in the choice between labor and capital,” his party must “start prioritizing the workingman.”

WASHINGTON — The Harris campaign has tapped Yohannes Abraham for a top role in the presidential transition team, according to a source familiar with the planning. Covington and Burling LLP, the law firm where former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder works, will help the transition team get set up. Abraham's appointment comes as the General Services Administration prepares to engage the Harris and Trump campaigns in the presidential transition process. watch nowAs the 2024 U.S. elections reach their home stretch, crypto companies are opening their wallets to try and influence the results. Nearly half of all the corporate money flowing into the election has come from the crypto industry, according to a report this week from the nonprofit watchdog group Public Citizen. More than 90% of the corporate crypto cash that's been raised was brought in this election cycle. Public Citizen's report found that of the 42 primary races that attracted money from crypto-backed super PACs, the candidate picked by the crypto industry won 36. In contrast, at the RNC convention, President Biden was mentioned only twice in four days.”Facts First: Kennedy’s claim about Biden mentions at the Republican National Convention is not even close to true. The Republican vice presidential nominee, Sen. JD Vance, said the word “Biden” 12 times in his own convention speech. Trump himself said “Biden” twice in his convention speech (during a single reference), but Kennedy’s claim was about the Republicans’ four-day gathering as a whole. The false claim that Biden was mentioned a total of twice over the four days of the Republican convention has been circulating on social media this week. Ballot measures on abortion rights have succeeded beyond what even their proponents imagined when the United States Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade two years ago. They have not only enshrined a constitutional right to abortion and restored access to the procedure in red and purple states. They have also converted what had been a voter mobilization advantage for Republicans into one for Democrats. Now the strategy — and an unbroken winning streak — faces its biggest test ever, with 10 states asking voters whether to establish a right to abortion in their constitutions. On Friday, Nebraska became the final state to certify — it will be the only state with two measures, one sponsored by abortion rights supporters and the other by opponents.

Top NewsFor months, the Biden administration waited to formally approve $20 billion in future American weapons sales to Israel, including F-15s and medium-range missiles. Almost none of the arms — which also include tank ammunition, tactical vehicles and mortars — are expected to be delivered to Israel for several years at least. The White House has tried to contain domestic opposition to arms for Israel in Congress, while attempting to keep the war against Hamas from escalating into a wider regional conflict. “We will continue to do what is necessary to ensure Israel can defend itself in the face of these threats.”Image An Israeli F-15 in southern Israel last year. Though Republicans have branded themselves as the party of capital-P patriotism since the Nixon years, Democrats sought to reclaim American pride this week. A striking number of this year's speakers focused on military might and distinctly American values, from Harris herself to Iraq war veterans. This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. For the past decade, Loge said that Democrats have been "shy" or "embarrassed" about embracing classic American patriotism, but that Harris and Walz are attempting to reframe the association with the flag. The biggest chunk – about $1.9 million – was spent by Trump’s campaign and fundraising committees on a Trump-owned company that operates his jet. Karoline Leavitt, a spokesperson for Trump’s campaign, said that “committees are paying the fair market rate for all venues and services” provided by Trump businesses. The dynamic of candidates shelling out thousands on Trump’s businesses while vying for his endorsement – which can make or break Republican campaigns – is an example of how politics has boosted his businesses’ bottom line. About 150 congressional candidates have reported spending campaign funds at Trump businesses, including some Democrats in the years before his first presidential bid. Walker’s campaign spent a total of nearly $215,000 at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s West Palm Beach golf club and his Las Vegas hotel.

This digital ad posted by Republican Senate candidate Dave McCormick in Pennsylvania, about a week before Biden eventually dropped his bid, was the blueprint. Almost immediately, Democrats saw a surge of support — mostly from disillusioned Democratic voters. As of this writing, it’s now Republicans in battleground states and districts who are begging their nominee to change course. As for the GOP, Trump and his allies have done everything they can to mold the GOP in Trump’s image, and anyone who doesn’t share that view has essentially been purged. Of course, the real challenge for both Republicans will be figuring out how to navigate Trump’s appearances in their respective states.
