The dominant global designer and supplier of AI chips aims to capture a portion of an exploding market for custom AI chips and to protect itself from the growing number of companies interested in finding alternatives to its products. Nvidia officials have met with representatives from Amazon.com , Meta, Microsoft, Google and OpenAI to discuss making custom chips for them, according to two sources familiar with the meetings. $30 billion marketAccording to estimates from research firm 650 Group's Alan Weckel, the data center custom chip market will grow to as much as $10 billion this year, and double that in 2025. The broader custom chip market was worth roughly $30 billion in 2023, which amounts to roughly 5% of annual global chip sales, according to Needham analyst Charles Shi. "With Broadcom's custom silicon business touching $10 billion, and Marvell's around $2 billion, this is a real threat," said Dylan Patel, founder of the silicon research group SemiAnalysis.

A congressional investigation has determined that five American venture capital firms invested more than $1 billion in China’s semiconductor industry since 2001, fueling the growth of a sector that the United States government now regards as a national security threat. Funds supplied by the five firms — GGV Capital, GSR Ventures, Qualcomm Ventures, Sequoia Capital and Walden International — went to more than 150 Chinese companies, according to the report, which was released Thursday by both Republicans and Democrats on the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party. The investments included roughly $180 million that went to Chinese firms that the committee said directly or indirectly support Beijing’s military. That includes companies that the U.S. government has said provide chips for China’s military research, equipment and weapons, such as Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation, or SMIC, China’s largest chipmaker. The report by the House committee focuses on investments made before the Biden administration imposed sweeping restrictions aimed at cutting off China’s access to American financing and technology.

New York CNN —Is Wall Street’s favorite clique of tech stocks in need of a makeover? Most of the Magnificent Seven stocks have reclaimed their leadership of the market this year, with shares of Nvidia, Meta Platforms, Alphabet and Microsoft reaching record highs. Many investors are skeptical that the Magnificent Seven will match their blockbuster gains from 2023, even if they continue their leadership this year. Jim Worden, chief investment officer at the Wealth Consulting Group, says he believes the group should consolidate to the “Fab Five,” which he classifies as the Magnificent Seven minus Tesla and Apple. “There is a big leadership change underway in the Magnificent Seven stocks,” wrote Louis Navellier, chairman of Navellier & Associates, in a note on Tuesday.

HONG KONG (AP) — Shares rose in most Asian markets Monday after Wall Street returned to record heights Friday, while Hong Kong’s benchmark dropped more than 2%, hovering near a 15-month low. Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 index gained 1.2% to 36,376.50. Wall Street's run-up was driven in part by hopes for rate cuts as U.S. inflation remained tame. Treasury yields have already relaxed significantly on expectations for rate cuts, and that helped the stock market’s rally accelerate sharply in November. The Fed itself has hinted that rate cuts are coming, though some officials have indicated they may begin later than the market is hoping for.

HONG KONG (AP) — Asia markets mostly advanced Friday after Wall Street recouped most of the week's earlier losses and Japan reported slowing inflation, which may keep its ultra-low interest rates steady. Japan’s inflation slowed for a second straight month, increasing the chance that the Bank of Japan will keep its ultra-low interest rates unchanged at its meeting next week. Hong Kong stocks were on track for their third consecutive week of losses as investors remain worried about the gloomy economic prospects. The world's largest contract chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company on Thursday posted better-than-expected profit and revenue on the back of weaker macroeconomic conditions. That compares with TSMC's guidance for fourth-quarter revenue between $18.8 billion and $19.6 billion. "In the fourth quarter, revenue increased 14.4% sequentially [from the third quarter], supported by the continued strong ramp of our industry-leading 3-nanometer technology," said TSMC in its fourth-quarter earnings report. But analysts say chip inventories at smartphone and PC makers are running down and expect restocking demand to pick up. In its third-quarter earnings report in October, TSMC said that its business was supported by the industry-leading 3-nanometer technology and higher demand for 5-nanometer technologies, partially offset by customers' ongoing inventory adjustment.

AMD shares rose over 1% during trading on Thursday to reach its highest-ever closing price, $162.67, while Nvidia, rose just under 2% to $571.07. Both companies have notched double-digit percentage gains to start the year after an explosive 2023 in which AMD shares popped 127.6% and Nvidia stock rocketed 238.8%.
