Feds probing safety of GM’s robotaxis around pedestrians
  + stars: | 2023-10-17 | by ( ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +1 min
Reuters —The US auto safety regulator has opened a probe into whether General Motors’ self-driving unit Cruise has taken sufficient precautions with its autonomous vehicles to safeguard pedestrians, it said on Tuesday. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said its Office of Defects Investigation has received two reports from Cruise of incidents in which pedestrians were injured, and has identified two further incidents via videos posted to public websites. NHTSA said the reports include Cruise autonomous vehicles “encroaching on pedestrians present in or entering roadways, including pedestrian crosswalks, in the proximity of the intended path of the vehicles”. In August the California Department of Motor Vehicles said it was investigating incidents involving Cruise in San Francisco, after a Cruise robotaxi was involved in a crash with an emergency vehicle. The California Public Utilities Commission voted in August to allow robotaxis from Cruise and Alphabet’s Waymo to operate around the clock, despite strong opposition from residents and city agencies.

The self-driving vehicle came to a stop on top of the pedestrian, the San Francisco Fire Department said on social media, adding the victim was freed using rescue tools and transported to a nearby trauma center. San Francisco police said Cruise was cooperating in the investigation. The DMV in August said it was investigating "recent concerning incidents" involving Cruise vehicles in San Francisco and asked the company to take half its robotaxis off the roads, a request Cruise complied with. NHTSA said Cruise vehicles "may engage in inappropriately hard braking or become immobilized."

CNN —A pedestrian in downtown San Francisco was found critically injured and trapped underneath a driverless car Monday night. San Francisco Fire Department spokesperson Justin Schorr told CNN early Tuesday that the victim has multiple life-threatening injuries. The driverless vehicle was operated by Cruise, a San Francisco-based self-driving car company and subsidiary of General Motors (GM). Controversial driverless carsCruise has been the subject of controversy in San Francisco after California regulators last month approved robotaxi companies to operate their driverless cars 24/7 throughout the city. But advocates say driverless cars remain safer than human-operated vehicles.

Drive Pilot can take over in traffic jams, letting you kick back, watch a movie, or read a book. Drive Pilot will be available in the electric EQS, shown here, as well as the gas-powered S-Class sedan. Over time, Mercedes plans to teach Drive Pilot to function in more places and at higher speeds. One lidar sensor actually helps Drive Pilot see in 3D, the other is just for symmetry. For people subjected to that sort of treatment daily — or, tragically, twice a day — Drive Pilot could be a game changer.

LONDON, Sept 20 (Reuters) - German self-driving startup Fernride said on Wednesday that it has raised $50 million in Series A funding to increase the use of its "human-assisted" autonomous freight trucks in customer's logistics yards. The Munich-based startup had initially closed the funding round with $31 million, but had extended it due to high investor interest, the company said. New investors include Munich Re's venture capital arm Munich Re Ventures, Bavarian venture capital firm Bayern Kapital and former Siemens Klaus Kleinfeld, who will become chairman of the board at Fernride. Existing investors, including strategic investors HHLA (HHFGn.DE) and Deutsche Bahn (DBN.UL) unit DB Schenker also participated in the funding round. Fernride's trucks currently operate autonomously around 80% of the time, then remote human operators to step in to help the remainder of the time.

As of Tuesday, the suburban Beijing city district of Yizhuang is officially letting local robotaxi operators — primarily Baidu and startup Pony.ai — charge fares for fully autonomous taxis, with no human staff inside. "We have very high confidence ... maybe only in three years, our full driverless vehicles are going to be running over the whole Beijing city," he said in an interview with CNBC on Monday. Out of more than 200 robotaxis that Pony.ai operates in the region, only about ten are currently fully driverless, Zhang said. Beijing city did not immediately respond to a CNBC request for comment.

Another said the whole design process for a large metal mold would typically cost about $4 million. To overcome the obstacles, Tesla turned to firms that make test molds out of industrial sand with 3D printers. To cast subframes with hollows as part of one gigacasting, Tesla plans to place solid sand cores printed by the binder jets within the overall mold. But despite that greater flexibility achieved in both the design process and the complexity of the large frames, there was still one more major hurdle to clear. And once Tesla is happy with the prototype mold, it can then invest in a final metal one for mass production.

My son Marlon has been obsessed with self-driving cars this year, as we've seen more and more Waymos and competing GM Cruise vehicles tootling around San Francisco without safety drivers. Last month, Waymo and Cruise won approval to operate driverless cars in San Francisco at any time of day. So with self-driving cars a common feature of our local landscape, we were excited to give one a try. The car pulled up with my initials, MR, on the display below the rotating lidar sensor on the roof. I was a skeptic about the promise of self-driving cars.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk hasn't always prioritized the $25,000 electric car he's promised. Musk has long been more interested in a robotaxi, Musk's biographer Walter Isaacson told Axios. Tesla executives have convinced Musk to do both. "For most of our history, profitable wasn't the first thing that came up when you asked someone about Uber," Khosrowshahi said on Uber's second-quarter conference call Aug. 1. The $1 a ride alone can add up to $4,000 to a driver's annual revenue, the company says. All of them will compete for customers on Uber's platform much as hotels search for business on Expedia.com – a business once run by Khosrowshahi. Indeed, one threat to Uber's current status as a market darling is if AV makers, especially Tesla, decide to compete with Uber directly for riders, Zino said. CNN —California authorities have asked General Motors to “immediately” take some of its Cruse robotaxis off the road after autonomous vehicles were involved in two collisions – including one with an active fire truck – last week in San Francisco. The California DMV said that Cruise has agreed to the request, and a spokesperson from Cruise told CNN that the company is investigating the firetruck crash as well. General Motors acquired Cruise Automation in 2016 for $1 billion, solidifying its place in the autonomous vehicles race, but many companies have since scaled back, or abandoned their driverless car ambitions. Ridesharing giants Uber and Lyft have both sold autonomous vehicle units in recent years. Even Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who has been optimistic about autonomous vehicle technology, has yet to fully deliver on his promise.

San Francisco is getting ready to tell robotaxi operators: not so fast. San Francisco wants robotaxi operators to slow things down amid a series of unfortunate events. San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu filed motions to the California Public Utilities Commission, the regulatory body that voted in favor of full-scale robotaxi services this month, asking for permits to be temporarily suspended, The San Francisco Chronicle reported. Previously, Waymo could only offer rides without charge and Cruise was limited to operating in about a third of San Francisco. However, San Francisco residents have been increasingly vocal about their city becoming a dangerous test-bed for driverless car technology amid fears the robotaxis will cause havoc.
