The recent sell-off in stocks could be a warning sign for what's coming for the economy, Mark Mobius said. If you look at the money supply growth in America, it is very low now," he said. We have more problems in the US and, that will affect the global situation unless the money supply is increased much more than it is now." Disruptions in the stock market are usually the signal "before the actual economic effects are seen," he added. A full-fledged bear market is unlikely, Bank of America said, as the market isn't flashing technical signals that would suggest a peak in stock prices.

CNN —Alleged Sinaloa cartel co-founder Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, in a statement released by his attorney, reiterated the claim he was “ambushed” and “kidnapped” by a son of notorious drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmán and hand-delivered to US authorities. In a room with a table topped with fruit, Zambada said, Joaquín Guzmán gestured for the cartel boss to follow him to a dark room nearby. He said he was driven to a landing strip and forced onto a private plane, where Joaquín Guzmán removed his hood and bound him to a seat using zip ties. One version has Joaquín Guzmán duping Zambada to orchestrate their arrest, US law enforcement officials have told CNN. Zambada is expected to be transferred to New York from Texas, one official told CNN.

Previously, running shoes were “flats” designed with a less-is-more approach. Carbon-plated supershoes from various brands are now worn by your average runners chasing personal records at major marathons around the world. Since the Vaporfly’s debut in 2016, runners have shattered world records, including achieving a sub-two-hour marathon. Japanese marathon runner Yusuke Ogura wears Nike Zoom Vaporfly running shoes in Marugame City in 2020. But while supershoes have transformed the landscape of professional running, the sport requires much more than a sturdy pair of running shoes.

CNN —A video that surfaced online appears to show bodies on burnt-out Russian military trucks in the country’s southwestern Kursk region, the latest sign that Ukraine’s cross-border assault is probing more deeply and inflicting significant damage on Moscow’s troops. Rybar, one of the more prominent Russian military blogs, published a roundup of developments Friday that said the front lines have “somewhat stabilized” with the arrival of Russian reinforcements. Rybar cited local residents of Vtoroye Knyazhino, a settlement on the outskirts of Sudzha, as saying Ukrainian infantry entered their village. US officials say they do not believe Ukraine intends to hold Russian territory for the long term. How to Cope When the Markets Panic
  + stars: | 2024-08-09 | by ( Jeff Sommer | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Time can speed up radically in the markets. Global stock and bond markets rose and fell and rose again in cascading waves, moving across oceans and time zones. Fears of a recession in the United States mounted, and the Federal Reserve came under pressure to cut interest rates and spur growth. Late in the week, it was almost as if the seemingly calamitous market whirlwind had never happened. What we just experienced wasn’t all that severe, on a historical basis, at least not in the United States — but it could well presage deeper losses down the road.

Editor’s note: If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, help is available. But what I really admire is her commitment to keeping her mental health in the limelight right alongside her gymnastics accomplishments. I learned to prioritize the trifecta of mental health: eating, sleeping, breathing. It also normalizes prioritizing our mental health, reducing the stigma, shame and isolation that surround mental illness. Your mental health is where health begins, and you deserve to take care of your mental health as much as Biles or any other Olympic athlete.

As the Ukrainian soldiers raced through the ruins of the destroyed city under the spying eye of Russian drones, the skeletal remains of blasted-out buildings cast eerie shadows in the light of a full moon. Burned-out cars littered the road next to craters from artillery strikes in this city, Toretsk, in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, that is now on the front line of the war with Russia. The hot July night smelled of violence — smoke and dust from destroyed buildings mixed with the sulfurous scent of explosives. The brigade allowed us to accompany them recently to view the destruction of Toretsk up close and the challenges Ukrainian forces face as they battle to keep control of the city. The only restrictions were that we not provide specific locations or other operational details that could compromise security.

On Monday afternoon, a federal judge ruled that Google violated US antitrust law with its search business. And despite yesterday’s decline, which already appears to have begun reversing, shares of Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google and Nvidia all remain up strongly year-to-date. Anything that threatens its market share could also put that core business — already facing competitive threats from emerging AI tools — at risk. It could also embolden lawmakers who have been looking to crack down further on the power of Big Tech. “This ruling will inspire short-term confidence for DuckDuckGo, Yahoo and other Google Search competitors.
