Bed Bath & Beyond files for bankruptcy
  + stars: | 2023-04-23 | by ( Nathaniel Meyersohn | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +9 min
Chris Hammons unloads a bag of items she purchased at a Bed Bath & Beyond store in Dallas, Texas September 23, 2009. In its bankruptcy filing, Bed Bath & Beyond said it had $5.2 billion in debt and assets of just $4.4 billion. Discount chains such as HomeGoods and TJ Maxx have also undercut Bed Bath & Beyond’s prices. Without the differentiators of the lowest prices or widest selection, Bed Bath & Beyond’s sales stagnated from 2012 to 2019. And Bed Bath & Beyond is the latest retail chain to file for bankruptcy this year.

Bank employees also met with Epstein after his accounts were closed to discuss other clients and introductions he could make to potential clients, the newspaper said, citing people familiar with the meetings. The interaction with Epstein was typical for a client of the private bank, a JPMorgan spokesman said after the article was published. JPMorgan is being sued in Manhattan federal court by women who said Epstein sexually abused them, and by the government of the U.S. Virgin Islands, where Epstein owned a private island. JPMorgan did business with Epstein as early as 1998, and managed about 55 Epstein-related accounts worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Epstein was a client for about five years after he pleaded guilty in 2008 to a Florida state prostitution charge.
Lilly has not previously discussed its Medicare coverage optimism publicly. The U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Such "coverage with evidence development" requirements are rare and historically used by Medicare to evaluate medical devices. Amyvid, Lilly's Alzheimer's imaging agent that can detect amyloid plaques on PET scans, has been subject to CMS' evidence development program for a decade. "It shuts out many patients," said Dr. Maria Carrillo, chief science officer of the Alzheimer’s Association, "especially minorities and rural patients."
For the past few decades, state and local governments throughout the U.S. have paid out a total of $2.9 billion to Americans who were wrongly convicted of crimes. Collectively, over 25,000 years have been lost behind bars to the wrongfully convicted, according to recent estimates. Thirty-eight states, the federal government and the District of Columbia all offer exonerees some form of wrongful-conviction compensation. "There's no credit checks, there's no collaterals, there's no guarantees, there's no assets," said Abraham Arouesty, of Tribeca Capital Group, a litigation firm that offers funding for wrongful-conviction cases. Separately, a 48-year-old woman and her 28-year-old daughter died Saturday after Russian forces shelled a neighborhood of the city of Kherson, the regional administration said on Telegram. The southern port city was occupied by Russian forces in the early months of the war, but Ukrainian forces regained control of it in November, one of the most notable battlefield defeats for Moscow.

Crypto exchange Binance expands in Argentina

BUENOS AIRES, April 4 (Reuters) - Crypto exchange Binance, which has been sued by U.S. regulators, said on Tuesday it is expanding services in inflation-hit Argentina, allowing users to buy and sell digital currencies directly with local pesos. Until now, Binance had operated in Argentina only as an intermediary platform to match crypto buyers and sellers. He said local users could transfer pesos to a Binance account and see their balance reflected there in local currency, which would then be usable to buy crypto. As Binance has faced mounting scrutiny from regulators, the exchange has lost some banking partners needed for so-called on-ramp, off-ramp transactions to fiat currencies. "Argentine users know the crypto world," Hinz said.

The platform will draw on data from medical records, insurance claims, pharmacies, mobile devices, sensors and various government agencies, they said. The database could help identify healthy people at risk for Alzheimer's, which affects about 6 million Americans, for future drug trials. The U.S. Medicare health plan for older adults will likely require such tracking in a registry as a condition of reimbursement for Leqembi. Silverberg said the data platform could also help researchers working in other disease areas understand which patients are most at risk and the impact of medications. The system would be built in a secure computing environment with a number of restrictions to ensure the privacy of people's health data, Silverberg said.
Each carbon credit is supposed to equal one metric ton of carbon dioxide avoided or removed from the atmosphere. Credits that meet the ICVCM’s standards would receive a so-called Core Carbon Principles badge. Still, it remains to be seen how carbon crediting organizations adopt the ICVCM’s standards. PREVIEWThe ICVCM’s effort comes during a time when many companies are hesitant to buy voluntary carbon credits or have pulled back. Less than a quarter of 137 global companies surveyed in the fourth quarter of 2022 plan to use carbon credits, according to the World Economic Forum.

FCC cracks down on spammy text messages
  + stars: | 2023-03-17 | by ( Brian Fung | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
Washington CNN —The Federal Communications Commission is cracking down on spammy text messages with new rules for telecom companies, citing a surge of consumer complaints in recent years tied to unwanted robotexts. The new rules require phone providers to block text messages from suspicious sources including phone numbers that appear to be “invalid, unallocated, or unused.” Carriers will also have to block text messages coming from phone numbers that claim not to ever send text messages, or that the government has identified as numbers not used for texting, the FCC said. But in recent years, an explosion of spam and scam text messages appears to have taken their place, leading to more than 18,000 consumer complaints at the FCC last year. The FCC is mulling additional regulations that could, among other things, apply Do Not Call registry protections to text messages for the first time. The FCC said it is also considering making it harder for marketers to use a single consumer consent to flood that user with calls and text messages from multiple sources and numbers.
"Jamie Dimon knew in 2008 that his billionaire client was a sex trafficker," attorney Mimi Liu told Manhattan U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff at a hearing late Thursday, referring to the year Epstein was first criminally charged with sex crimes. "If Staley is a rogue employee, why isn't Jamie Dimon?" The lawyer continued: "Staley knew, Dimon knew, JPMorgan Chase knew" about Epstein's criminal conduct. Wexler also said, "Jamie Dimon has no recollection of reviewing the Epstein accounts."

MALATYA, Turkey, March 4 (Reuters) - The Trend Garden Residence, an upscale serviced apartment building in the Turkish city of Malatya, boasted a gym, freshly-furnished rooms and a roof-top cafeteria. Erdogan, who has led Turkey since 2003, said following the disaster that building standards have improved under his watch. Among those arrested as part of the Trend Garden probe is Engin Aslan, according to the government officials. Corporate records show he is the majority owner of a Turkish company that, according to land registration documents, owns the building. A spokesperson for the Yesilyurt district municipality, where Trend Garden was located, declined to comment about the building’s registration history.
"I don't want card companies to raise interest rates or fees on merchants as a way to dissuade them" from selling guns and ammunition, Owen told Reuters. Visa Inc (V.N) declined to comment on the state bills. Other payment card companies Discover, Mastercard Inc and (MA.N) American Express Co (AXP.N) did not respond to requests for comment. Owen, the Mississippi state legislator, said he expects that payment companies could address any technical issues the bills could create. "I think the credit card companies are going to have to adapt on a state-by-state basis," Owen said.
