San Francisco CNN —President Joe Biden hopes to walk away from his closely watched summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday having put the US-China relationship on steadier footing after months of tension between the two superpowers. Biden administration officials have been working ever since to restore the channel, but those efforts were hampered by the tense episode involving a Chinese spy balloon that Biden ordered shot down earlier this year. And American officials have watched carefully as China scales up its military exercises in the water and air around the island. A political tight ropeAs Biden was preparing for Wednesday’s summit, Republicans questioned his decision to seek a meeting with Xi. The deal, which has been a priority for the Biden administration, would target companies that produce and export the source material to make the deadly synthetic opioid.

Biden may want Xi to help bring down the temperature on the world’s ongoing wars and help prevent new ones from igniting. Although China occasionally tries to keep a façade of neutrality, there’s little question that it is aligned with Russia. White House officials have said Biden will provide “clarity” to Xi, on the US positions regarding Taiwan and Russia’s war against Ukraine. Still, there’s a limit to how much Xi can downplay the need for growth. Even so, Biden and Xi are likely to make some progress in an important and necessary meeting.

For the past month, normal life in Ramallah — a city in the West Bank usually known for its young population and its vibrant nightlife — has been brought to a standstill. It’s part of the atmosphere of escalating violence that has killed more than 130 Palestinians living in the West Bank since Oct. 7. But these were usually preceded by times of increased conflict, such as the first and second intifadas, or popular uprisings. In the West Bank, morale is low on the quiet streets. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Arson was the cause of a massive weekend fire that charred and indefinitely closed a vital section of a Los Angeles freeway, causing major traffic headaches for hundreds of thousands of commuters, California authorities said. Los Angeles residents were urged to avoid travel to the area Monday and to work from home if possible. Ertugrul Taciroglu, chair of the civil and environmental engineering department at the University of California, Los Angeles, said part of the challenge is how expensive real estate has become. The city and county of Los Angeles in 2020 agreed to provide housing for almost 7,000 people living under freeways and near exit and entrance ramps. Associated Press writer Christopher Weber in Los Angeles contributed to this report.

Netanyahu was asked by NBC News whether Israeli allegations that Hamas had a command post under Gaza's main hospital justified jeopardizing the lives of sick people and babies. Netanyahu was asked if Israel has a plan to get fuel into Gaza to power hospitals. "We just offered Shifa hospital the fuel, they refused it," Netanyahu said. CNN —Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday refused to answer whether he would take responsibility for failing to prevent the October 7 attack on Israel, saying that there would be time for such “difficult” questions once the war is over. Asked if he would allow days-long pauses, Netanyahu told CNN, “that’s not a pause.”“If you’re talking about stopping the fighting, that’s exactly what Hamas wants,” Netanyahu said, arguing that Hamas would use those extended pauses to replenish its supplies. This week, the US suggested that the Palestinian Authority – which exercises limited self-rule in the occupied West Bank – could play a role. Remember the PA [Palestinian Authority] was already in Gaza,” Netanyahu continued. The PA used to run both Gaza and the West Bank but was ousted after a brief civil war with Hamas.

A vial labelled "Novavax V COVID-19 Vaccine" is seen in this illustration taken January 16, 2022. Still, the Maryland-based biotech, which has been banking on cost cuts and commercial sales of its retooled COVID shot to help it stay afloat, reiterated its "going concern warning". The company expects the 2023-2024 U.S. market for COVID shots to be between 30 million and 50 million doses. The company's updated COVID shot, using a more traditional technology than the mRNA-based vaccines of rivals Pfizer (PFE.N) and Moderna (MRNA.O), was authorized in the U.S. in October. Novavax missed out on the COVID vaccine windfall that benefited rivals due to manufacturing issues that delayed its filing for approval when the pandemic was raging.

Early 2022 seemed to be a dire time for San Francisco, with shocking examples of retail crime. But according to a recent report, retail crime in San Franciscio is now 5% below its pre-pandemic norm. Retailers like Whole Foods and Walgreens referenced retail crime as a rationale for shuttering San Francisco stores. A San Francisco Target placed more merchandise under lock and key and increased reporting to police. Of the numerous challenges confronting San Francisco one year ago, retail crime is one that at least seems not to be getting worse.

Workers with earnings in the bottom 10% of wages saw higher wage gains than those in the top 10%. Meanwhile, the already rich — those who make over $250,000 — only saw their childcare costs increase by about 4%. As the labor market continues to slow, and childcare costs only rise with the end of pandemic-era subsidies , it might continue to be a bad time to be a HENRY.
