FRANKFURT, July 23 (Reuters) - Mercedes-Benz (MBGn.DE) is making China, the world's top auto market, central to its next electric vehicle (EV) campaign starting in 2025, its CEO told German magazine Automobilwoche. From 2025, all of Mercedes-Benz's new vehicle platforms will only make EVs under a strategy the German luxury automaker outlined in 2021. A senior executive told Automobilwoche the models the company plans to launch in China based on the upcoming MB.EA platform were being reviewed to ensure they better meet the needs of local customers, singling out space and digital content. China remains the most relevant market for Germany's automakers, but local brands are in control with an 81% share of the Chinese EV market in 2022, Counterpoint Research found. China also has a significant stake in Mercedes-Benz, whose top two shareholders are Beijing Automotive Group Co Ltd (1958.HK) and Geely (GEELY.UL) Chairman Li Shufu.

Harvard physicist Avi Loeb announced the discovery of tiny "spherules" at the bottom of the Pacific. But three of the world's top experts on the search for aliens are skeptical the tech is from aliens. The fragments "could be a spacecraft from another civilization, or some technological gadget," Loeb told CBS News. This will constitute independent evidence for the interstellar origin of IM1 in addition to its measured speed," Loeb wrote. Loeb told Insider that, when ready, the team will publish their findings in a scientific paper that will be "shared openly and submitted for a peer-reviewed journal."

A new aerospace company is building a rocket that could cut the travel time to Mars in half. UK-based aerospace company Pulsar Fusion is working to build a rocket powered by nuclear fusion that could reach speeds of 500,000 mph, the company announced. With current technology, NASA estimates it would take seven months to reach Mars, so about 30% of the total "safe" trip time would be wasted in transit. In response to a story about using nuclear rockets to reach Mars in 100 days, he said it was something NASA should be exploring, calling it a "great idea." Pulsar Fusion is looking to have a test firing of a rocket toward the end of this decade.

NASA cleared key hurdles that allow it to launch a spacecraft to the asteroid in October. The asteroid is thought to be made up of gold, iron and nickel, with its value estimated at $10 quintillion. The spacecraft will launch on a SpaceX rocket, and head to the Main Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter. Companies have a legal right to any materials mined from celestial bodies, through the 2015 US Commercial Space Launch Competitiveness Act. In fact, Psyche is not the most valuable one, as it's surpassed by Davida, a $27 quintillion asteroid.

BEIJING, July 18 (Reuters) - China's next-generation crewed spacecraft, which can transport up to seven astronauts, may fly for the first time between 2027 and 2028, a veteran Chinese astronaut said. Recent tests on the return capsule of the next-generation spacecraft have been "very successful", with their first flights estimated to take place between 2027 and 2028, said Yang, currently deputy chief designer of China's manned spaceflight project. The next-generation spacecraft was first tested in 2020. China's current Shenzhou spacecraft, based on Russia's Soyuz, can transport up to three astronauts to low-Earth orbit. The return module's high heat resistance also allows much of it to be re-used.

India’s first attempt at putting a robotic spacecraft on the surface of the moon three years ago ended in a crash and a crater. The mission, called Chandrayaan-3, comes amid a renewed interest in exploring the moon, but in the past decade, only China has succeeded in landing a spacecraft there in one piece. Chandrayaan-3 is the first of as many as six missions that could successfully land on the moon in the months ahead. The latest evidence comes from an instrument called SHERLOC mounted on the six-wheeled rover's robotic arm that enables a detailed mapping and analysis of organic molecules. They obtained evidence indicating the presence of organic molecules in multiple rock samples, including some collected for potential return to Earth for future analysis. OceanGate said it is suspending all exploration and commercial operations weeks after its submersible imploded near the Titanic wreckage site killing all five people on board. It has plans to move all its future products onto four new BEV platforms, STLA Small, Medium, Large and Frame, starting with STLA Medium from Europe this year. The STLA Medium platform will support several propulsion configurations; in full electric configuration it will feature a standard range of over 500 kilometres, which can be raised to up to 700 kilometres with a 'performance pack'. NASA said Ingenuity's signal cut out on April 26 thanks to a hill that separated the helicopter from the Perseverance rover. On June 28, the rover finally made it over the hill, giving the helicopter the signal it needed to contact NASA mission control. But the next day, the helicopter successfully completed its 50th flight on the red planet.
