For the second year in a row, a Texas locale ranks at the most wallet-friendly college town in the U.S., according to WalletHub's latest ranking. But this year, Edinburg — home to the University of Texas, Rio Grande Valley — didn't maintain its first-place position. The city is home to a number of colleges, including Texas Southmost College and Our Lady of the Lake University at Rio Grande Valley. Brownsville is located at the most southern tip of Texas, about four and a half hours south of San Antonio. Here are the 10 most wallet-friendly college town and cities in the U.S., according to WalletHub:

Among Muslims, the difference was 43% agreeing with the statement versus an estimated 66% who privately agreed. While 27% of Democratic respondents publicly agreed with the statement "I support defunding the police," just 3% privately supported the movement. While 50% of Republicans publicly said "we live in a mostly fair society," just 11% privately agreed. Similarly, 2% of Republicans were thought to privately trust the government to tell the truth, while 14% said so publicly. A lack of social trust causes people to resent each other, look for scapegoats, and become susceptible to demagoguery, he said.

Expect the unexpected in Friday’s jobs report

In any other month, the finishing touch would be a clean reading on the labor market from the official jobs report. However, a common thread among economists is that the strikes and hurricanes could take a 100,000-job bite out of the October jobs report. The last time there were back-to-back major hurricanes — Harvey and Irma in 2017 — the forecasts for the following month’s jobs report were for a loss of 33,000 positions. And each contribute to two of the biggest numbers in the monthly jobs report. A key date to keep in mind for the jobs report is October 12, as it anchors the “reference period” for both surveys.

Elon Musk and his political action committee are seeking to move the Philadelphia District Attorney's lawsuit targeting their $1 million swing state voter daily lottery to federal court from a state-level court. It is not clear what will happen at the hearing, given the notice of removal in federal court. As a rule, federal law bars a state court proceeding from taking place if a party in the case has filed a notice of removal to federal court and a copy of that notice is filed with the state court. The notice filed in federal court by lawyers for Musk and his America PAC argue that because that PAC is registered as a federal entity, it is not subject to state law. Krasner's lawsuit, which claims Musk's $1 million giveaway is an illegal, unregulated lottery, was filed in Court of Common Pleas on Monday.

The central bank also revised down its forecasts, putting the average annual inflation rate for 2024 at 1.2% from 1.3%, while projecting price increases will grow by 0.6% in 2025, compared with a previous outlook of 1.1%. Foreign exchange (FX) interventions take place when a bank buys or sells its currency in the FX market to raise or lower its value against another currency. As a former acting U.S. trade representative who also served on the National Security Council, I’ve engaged in international economic policymaking firsthand. Trump’s main economic idea is to indiscriminately impose tariffs on U.S. trading partners, but it is American importers, exporters and consumers who will pay the price. When Trump last levied tariffs, the EU, Canada, China and other trading partners imposed their own tariffs in retaliation. While President Joe Biden left most of Trump’s tariffs against China in place, he managed to negotiate agreements that led to the easing of many retaliatory measures. As president, Harris would lead an economy that helps everyone, not just those at the very top.

Some customers think the coffee chain has drifted too far from its core, according to Niccol. He's betting that more personal touches — including bringing back Sharpies to write customer names or messages on cups — will bring customers back to cafes. Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol said the coffee chain plans to buy roughly 200,000 Sharpie markers as part of his plan to take the coffee chain back to its roots. For decades, Starbucks positioned itself as a place to linger, but the company has lost that sheen over the years. Election officials in pivotal battleground states including Pennsylvania, Michigan and Arizona have all tried – and largely failed – to fact-check Musk in real time. Election officials say they are simply outmatched up against Musk’s followers and the X algorithm. “Election officials, they have a very hard job – their job is to be election officials not to be Tweeters,” said Renée DiResta, an expert in disinformation and an associate research professor at Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy. Election officials in Pennsylvania are similarly attempting to fact-check Musk’s false claims on X but acknowledge those efforts are unlikely to stymie the spread of election lies. In Georgia, election officials see little point in trying to engage with Musk directly, instead turning to the method they relied on in 2020 to beat back misinformation: Regular press conferences with election officials rebutting the latest election falsehoods.

“I have a plan and strategy,” Ivan Raiklin, a former Green Beret and political operative who has close ties to associates of Trump, told a group of Pennsylvania activists earlier this month. Four years ago, Trump’s unsuccessful efforts to overturn his loss to President Joe Biden didn’t truly materialize until after the election. Brian Snyder/ReutersBut this time around, MAGA activists have been planning to undermine a potential Harris victory well in advance of the election, with some even arguing that state legislators should simply ignore the election results and award electoral votes to Trump by default. “Those looking to overturn the election are way ahead of where they were in 2020,” said Harris. Trump himself has echoed some of the conspiracy theories pushed by his supporters, suggesting that election fraud is rampant in 2024.
