☆ GM earnings give its restive workers an inch

On Tuesday, GM reported strong earnings that will embolden staff who have walked out at all three of the big Detroit firms. GM beat analysts’ expectations for third-quarter profit despite a $200 million hit from the strikes that started in September. That said, the firm run by Mary Barra also ditched its official forecast as it wrestles with the $200 million weekly costs from labor disruptions. Fortunately for GM, talks with its union seem to have narrowed in from earlier demands that would have vaporized the industry’s operating profit. Ongoing strikes by the United Auto Workers union, which represents GM employees, cost the company $200 million in the third quarter.

The UAW said another 5,000 workers are going on strike, bringing the total number of UAW members on strike at the Big Three automakers to over 45,000, on day 40 of the strike. The workers took the strike to Arlington Assembly, home to some of GM's most profitable vehicles, the Chevy Tahoe, Chevy Suburban, GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade. The union's strategy of targeted strikes has throttled billions in revenue for the Detroit Three while requiring fewer than half the 150,000 UAW members at the companies to forgo pay and walk picket lines. "It's time GM workers, and the whole working class, get their fair share." But he told UAW members "there is more to be won".

☆ UniCredit 'rebalancing' Amundi relationship in fee income drive

It's rebalancing a little bit, and will rebalance going forward," UniCredit CEO Andrea Orcel told analysts when presenting the bank's third quarter results. Sources told Reuters in May that UniCredit had been trimming the proportion of Amundi funds in its total AUM, paying penalties for failing to meet contractual minimums. Orcel said UniCredit will maintain its current "open architecture" approach to asset management, which involves partnering with all major players, including Amundi, to offer "best in class" products. Since taking over at UniCredit in 2021, the former investment banker, has been working to boost revenue from asset management in an effort to increase net fee income as a proportion of UniCredit's overall revenue. As he sought to review the 10-year Amundi distribution deal, Orcel signed an agreement with Azimut (AZMT.MI) in late 2022 giving the Italian asset manager access to UniCredit's clients.

The upshot of the whole picture is to give U.S. stock futures a lift ahead of the open on Tuesday - with Asia and European bourses in positive territory too as bond markets stabilised. China's decision may escalate trade disputes globally and spur other countries to prioritize research into alternative sources and materials, industry executives said. "We see China's move as a potential catalyst to highlight the urgency of improving (U.S.) graphite supply," said John DeMaio, president of Graphex Group's (6128.HK) graphene division. It has graphite supply deals with Syrah Resources (SYR.AX) and is looking for other sources, DeMaio said. Synthetic graphite could account for nearly two-thirds of the EV battery anode market by 2025, Benchmark Mineral Intelligence estimates. Oct 20 (Reuters) - New car sales in the European Union rose 9.2% in September, helped by a jump in sales of electric and hybrid vehicles, which together accounted for more than half of car sales last month, industry data showed on Friday. Together, fully-electric cars, plug-in hybrids and full hybrids accounted for just over 50% of sales, the data showed. As recently as 2015, diesel vehicles comprised more than 50% of new car sales in the EU. Car sales in Europe have been steadily recovering from pandemic-related supply chain problems, most notably a global shortage of semiconductor chips. Despite 14 straight months of growth, car sales for the first nine months of 2023 remain 20% below the same period in 2019 before the pandemic.

MILAN, Oct 19 (Reuters) - The U.S. funds CalSTRS and New York City Comptroller said on Thursday they would vote in favour of the outgoing board's slate of nominees for the new Mediobanca board at the bank's annual meeting this month. Mediobanca's outgoing board has proposed 15 members, including a new term for current CEO Alberto Nagel and Chairman Renato Pagliaro ahead of the Oct. 28 meeting. The two funds did not disclose their stakes in Mediobanca. Proxy adviser Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS), Glass Lewis and Pensions & Investment Research Consultants (PIRC) said last week they were recommending Mediobanca investors vote in favour of the outgoing board's slate of nominees. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 13,000 to a seasonally adjusted 198,000 for the week ended Oct. 14, the Labor Department said on Thursday. Though the labor market is gradually cooling, conditions remain tight, with claims hovering in the lower end of their range of 194,000 to 265,000 for this year. The claims report covered the week during which the government surveyed business establishments for the nonfarm payrolls component of October's employment report. The so-called continuing claims increased 29,000 to a still-low 1.734 million during the week ending Oct. 7, the claims report showed.
