There’s a gathering sense that President Biden’s response to the war in Gaza may cost him the 2024 election. On Friday my colleagues in the newsroom reported on a growing backlash against Biden coming from young and left-leaning voters. I don’t think so, and to understand why, it’s important to understand the core responsibilities of an American president. It was delivered most memorably by then-Vice President Biden, of all people, at the 2012 Democratic National Convention. Now fast-forward to August 2024, when Biden will speak on his own behalf in Chicago at the next Democratic convention.

Other lessons do apply, but not in any simple way. But not every aggressive path America took after 9/11 looks mistaken in hindsight. The long-term debacle of our Afghanistan occupation doesn’t make our initial decision to topple the Taliban unwise. Setting out to destroy the Islamic State’s caliphate rather than seeking stable coexistence was a correct and successful call. Reportedly that kind of cruise-missile minimalism is what Bin Laden expected from America after Sept. 11 as well.

Rite Aid, one of the largest U.S. pharmacy retailers, stumbled under its high debt, revenue declines, increased competition, and opioid litigation, according to its court filings. Founded in 1962, Rite Aid employs 45,000 people at more than 2,000 retail stores in 17 states, and will remain open for business during the bankruptcy. Aid from several countries has been building up in Egypt's Sinai peninsula due to a failure to reach a deal enabling its safe delivery to Gaza along with evacuations of some foreign passport holders through the Rafah crossing into Egypt. Israeli bombardments on the Gaza side of the Rafah crossing into Egypt, the main crossing out of Gaza not controlled by Israel, have disrupted operations there. There is alarm in Egypt over the prospect that residents in Gaza could be displaced by Israel's siege and bombardment. Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry told CNN on Saturday that the Rafah crossing was open but the roads leading to it in Gaza were "inoperable" due to Israeli bombardment. He said that if foreign nationals were able to cross the border Egypt would facilitate their departure to their home countries.
