And in recent months, Musk has become one of Trump’s biggest donors and most energetic supporters, turning X into an unofficial house organ for his campaign. On Tuesday, Musk promoted an X Community — a large group of users — called the Election Integrity Community, which was created by his super PAC, America PAC. Musk and X did not respond to requests for comment. Musk has personally boosted many of them, such as @libsoftiktok and the account of conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer, who was suspended from Twitter before Musk bought it. Musk is the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, but X may be his highest-profile political asset.

HONOLULU — Snow fell on Hawaii’s tallest peak this week, briefly turning the mountaintop into a winter wonderland. The summit area of Mauna Kea on the Big Island got about 2 inches of white powder. But it’s not unusual for snow to fall at the higher elevations on Mauna Kea during the wetter, winter months. “Combination of cold temperatures and moisture equals snow when it’s below freezing,” Ballard said. Centuries-old stories say Mauna Kea is the first-born son of the sky father and earth mother.

An overdue hunter in Alaska was found dead Wednesday after an apparent attack by at least one brown bear, state police said. A search was launched, and his remains were found at around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, state troopers said in a daily report of incidents. Investigators know a brown bear was involved because that's the only type of bear in the area, DeSpain said. Alaska has black bears, brown bears — which include grizzlies — and polar bears. There are around 100,000 black bears and around 30,000 brown bears in Alaska, the state Department of Fish and Game says on its website.

“Joe Biden should be ashamed of himself, if he knows what he’s even doing,” Trump said from the garbage truck. Former President Donald Trump held a press conference from inside a garbage truck at Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport on Wednesday. Rep. Adam Schiff, D-California, attended the Harris rally after stumping on the trail with Baldwin. He sidestepped a question about Biden’s remarks on Tuesday and Trump’s garbage truck gag response, saying he wasn’t focused on the matter. But to Harris supporters, Trump’s outrage over Biden’s comments rang hollow.

Former President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he would "protect" women "whether the women like it or not," a comment the Harris campaign immediately pounced on. "I said, 'Well, I’m going to do it, whether the women like it or not,'" Trump said. A Harris campaign spokesperson, Sarafina Chitika, also said on X that Trump "thinks he knows better than the women of America." Reached for comment, Trump campaign spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said: "Harris may be the first woman Vice President but she has implemented dangerously liberal policies that have left women worse off financially and far less safe than we were four years ago under President Trump. Harris has centered much of her campaign on preserving and expanding reproductive rights after the end of Roe v. Wade.

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea test-fired a suspected long-range ballistic missile that is designed to strike the continental United States, its neighbors said Thursday, days before the U.S. presidential election. This would be the first ICBM launch since December for North Korea, a reclusive nuclear-armed state that has been ratcheting up its rhetoric against the U.S. and its allies South Korea and Japan. Japanese Defense Minister Gen Nakatani later said the missile fell into the sea off North Korea’s east coast around 8:37 a.m. He said the launch time of 86 minutes would be the longest ever for a North Korean missile test, and that it could be a new type of missile. North Korea has said the deployment is a “rumor,” while Russian President Vladimir Putin did not deny the reports when asked about them by NBC News last week.

The Shell logo is displayed outside a petrol station in Radstock in Somerset, England, on Feb. 17, 2024. British oil giant Shell on Thursday posted a small year-on-year drop in third-quarter profit as a sharp decline in crude prices and lower refining margins were partially offset by higher gas sales. The energy company reported adjusted earnings of $6 billion for the July-September period, beating analyst expectations of $5.3 billion, according to estimates compiled by LSEG. Shell posted adjusted earnings of $6.3 billion in the second quarter and $6.2 billion in the third quarter of 2023. It marks the 12th consecutive quarter that Shell has announced at least $3 billion in buybacks, Sinead Gorman, chief financial officer at Shell, said in a video presentation.

Merck on Thursday reported third-quarter revenue and adjusted earnings that topped expectations as the company saw strong sales from its top-selling cancer drug Keytruda, recently launched treatments and its animal health business. But Merck's vaccine that prevents cancer from HPV, the most common sexually transmitted infection in the U.S., posted another quarter of lighter-than-expected sales. Revenue from the shot, Gardasil, fell 11% compared to the year-earlier period, mainly due to lower demand in China. The company booked $16.66 billion in revenue for the third quarter, up 4% from the same period a year ago. The loss of exclusive rights to the medicine will likely cause sales to fall, forcing the company to draw revenue from elsewhere.

But they may ditch their argument Friday morning, when the October jobs report is set to be released — just days before Election Day. Groshen disagreed, saying that initial estimates of the monthly change in hiring are “noisier than they used to be” because of the lower response. However, that gets smoothed out in later revisions as response rates improve with the additional time. That exacerbates the funding shortfall at the BLS, where inflation-adjusted funding has steadily declined over the past decade, she said. That would help improve, for instance, Federal Reserve officials’ ability to make interest rate decisions that hinge on the latest labor market data, Groshen told CNN.
