MANCHESTER, England, Sept 15 (Reuters) - Manchester City will be without injured Jack Grealish, John Stones and Mateo Kovacic for their Premier League clash against West Ham United on Saturday, and manager Pep Guardiola was unsure about their return for the start of the Champions League. "We'll see step by step," Guardiola told reporters on Friday. Walker was left out of City's squad for the Champions League final after he started both legs of the semi-final. "I was sad that he didn't get to play in the Champions League final, but look how good his response has been since then," Guardiola said. While City are the only team in the top flight with a 100% record so far, Guardiola insisted the season really only starts now.

CNN —Two gold necklaces dating from around 2,500 years ago have been found by chance in northwestern Spain by a worker for a local water company. Sergio Marciandi was working in Cavandi, Asturias, on August 29 when he spotted a gold necklace among some rocks. Archaeologists are excited about what further study of the necklaces could reveal. Museo Arqueológico de Asturias“It’s really impressive,” said Arias, who added that the find could boost our understanding of the Iron Age, the period in which they were made. While other gold necklaces from the Iron Age have been found, most were discovered in the 18th and 19th centuries, when limited archaeological techniques meant much of the information about their provenance was lost, Arias explained.

CNN —Public schools in France have been turning away students for breaking a new national ban on the abaya, a long, robe-like garment often worn by Muslim women, as a rights group filed an appeal against the prohibition. A total of 67 girls returned home rather than remove their abayas, Education Minister Gabriel Attal told CNN affiliate BFMTV on Tuesday. The ban has its legal foundation in a law passed in 2004 banning the wearing of “conspicuous” religious symbols in schools. “They say that the abaya is a religious dress, but it’s not at all, it’s not a religious dress, it’s a traditional dress, it’s a dress that all girls wear, both veiled and non-veiled, and so it’s a bit of a problem,” she said. French President Emmanuel Macron has defended the ban, saying it is not “stigmatizing” anyone but “people who push the abaya” are.

While water levels are known to fluctuate each year, these changes have become more extreme due to the climate crisis. Communities that rely on fishing are struggling as low water levels adds to mounting problems: declining fish stocks due to pollution and overfishing. “It’s going to keep affecting us, there won’t be any more totora, the islands are deteriorating, that’s what worries us,” Charca told CNN. Tokyo CNN —Police in Japan have implemented an unusual strategy in order to prevent drunk driving: encouraging people to consume alcohol and then letting them loose on a driving course. Instructors rode in each car during the initiative, which took place inside the driving school, a police spokesperson told CNN. “We hope that more drivers will realize how dangerous drunk driving is,” said the police spokesperson. Alcohol consumption in Japan waned during the pandemic, with restrictions hitting the business of bars and other places selling drinks. In a post on its website in 2021, it called excessive alcohol consumption a “major social problem” that persisted despite the recent slowdown in consumption.

Opinion | To Prosecute or Not to Prosecute Trump
  + stars: | 2023-08-18 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:Re “The Prosecution of Trump May Have Terrible Consequences,” by Jack Goldsmith (Opinion guest essay, Aug. 10), about the charges brought by Jack Smith:Mr. Goldsmith argues that the prosecution of Mr. Trump will further erode the already diminished belief that Republicans have in our justice system and may “inspire tit-for-tat investigations of presidential actions by future Congresses and by administrations of the opposing party.”He may be correct. But the integrity of our democracy is at stake. As the New York University law professors Ryan Goodman and Andrew Weissman have written, “To not have brought this case against Mr. Trump would have been an act of selective nonprosecution” because so many foot soldiers have been prosecuted for their Jan. 6 attempt to disrupt our government. To the Editor:Jack Goldsmith studiously ignores a key factor of this disputed topic. While he details concerns about prosecuting Mr. Trump, he does not touch on the toxic consequences of not prosecuting.
