Sen. JD Vance, the Republican vice presidential nominee, confirmed to reporters Saturday that former President Donald Trump is "consistent" in his views on defunding Planned Parenthood. A journalist asked Vance, R-Ohio, whether a future Trump administration would defund Planned Parenthood, the reproductive health care group that has garnered opposition from many conservatives for its pro-abortion-rights positions. “On the question of defunding Planned Parenthood, look, I mean our view is we don’t think that taxpayers should fund late-term abortions," Vance said after Trump's rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The Trump campaign and Planned Parenthood did not immediately respond to requests for further comment Sunday night. In 2016, then-candidate Trump said in a debate that he would end federal funding for Planned Parenthood, saying he would “defund it because I’m pro-life.”

The success of so many 2020 election deniers in Republican primaries this year demonstrates that Trump’s ongoing campaign of election lies continues to have a strong hold on his party. Wearing a cap with the “Make America Great Again” slogan of Trump’s campaign, Musk appeared to acknowledge the foreboding nature of his remarks. It was the first time that Musk joined one of Trump's rallies and was evidence of their growing alliance in the final stretch of the presidential election. Trump has said he would tap Musk to lead a government efficiency commission if he regains the White House. Trump joined Musk in August for a rare public conversation on X, a friendly chat that spanned more than two hours. The event took place at the same property where a gunman’s bullets grazed Trump’s right ear and killed a Trump supporter, Corey Comperatore.

Former President Donald Trump arrives for a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024. Trump first announced his plan to return to Butler in July, 13 days after the rally shooting. Musk officially endorsed Trump hours after the Butler assassination attempt, marking a stark pivot in their formerly hostile relationship. Going into Saturday's rally, the Secret Service said it beefed up its security plan. On Friday, the Secret Service pledged that it had "made comprehensive changes and enhancements" to its communications abilities and resources.

And then make sure they actually do vote,” Musk said at the former president’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Elon Musk is joining Donald Trump for a rally in Pennsylvania. Musk has become one of Trump's most prominent supporters. As president-elect in late 2016, Trump announced Musk would join his economic advisory board, but Musk would later cut ties with the administration over disagreements on climate change policies. At a Trump rally, Trump called Musk a "bullshit artist," after which Musk suggested Trump should not run for president again. Trump retaliated, saying Musk would be "worthless" without government subsidies and that Trump previously could have made Musk beg on his knees for government support.

President Joe Biden said Friday he was confident that the November election would be "free and fair" but expressed concerns that it may not be "peaceful." During a surprise appearance at the White House press briefing, a reporter asked Biden if he thought that the election would be free and fair and whether it would be peaceful. Vice President Kamala Harris' running mate, Minnesota Gov. Biden on Friday referenced the exchange, telling reporters, "I noticed the vice presidential Republican candidate did not say he'd accept the outcome of the election. Harris’ campaign has acted as if she’s sitting on a lead, even though she has failed to separate from her opponent, former President Donald Trump, others said. That may look different in today’s evolving media environment than prior campaigns, but coupled with campaign events, aggressive organizing and a historic paid media campaign, it’s a winning approach." “They are very cautious,” a person involved in Harris’ race said of her campaign. And it’s a playbook that former President Donald Trump’s campaign has tossed aside. It’s a gamble, Trump’s campaign internally acknowledges, but one that they insist is built on data they have collected over nearly a decade and tested for the past six months. Days later, the Michigan state party chairman also plugged 10xVotes when he rolled into Traverse City, Michigan, alongside Trump running mate JD Vance. But rather than courting those voters, Trump’s campaign is in search of new ones. Trump’s campaign has also tried to seize on discord within the Democratic coalition.
