A doctor shortage is projected to hit 86,000 by 2036. According to the Rural Medical Training Collaborative, 133 rural residencies in family medicine and 69 rural-track programs are recruiting for 2025 enrollment, along with 30 internal-medicine residencies and 16 psychiatry residencies. Several pieces of legislation have also been introduced to Congress to address the doctor shortage. For example, HR 7855, the Association of American Medical Colleges-endorsed Rural Residency Planning and Development Act of 2024, would codify the Rural Residency Planning and Development Program, which funds the startup costs of residency training in rural areas, Dill said. From 2019 to 2024, the program has enabled the launch of 46 accredited rural residency programs across 38 states and Puerto Rico.

A pro-Palestinian protest erupted outside of the New York Stock Exchange on Monday. There was no disruption to trading and none of the protestors appeared to make it to the historic trading floor. NYSE security fences off a perimeter area outside of the exterior of the building on Broad street in lower Manhattan. According to video shared on social media, the group, called Jewish Voice for Peace, broke into that area and protestors were chaining themselves to the security fence and some exterior doors. Almost half of young women have at least a bachelor’s degree compared to 37% of young men. That compares to 2008, when Barack Obama won the votes of 66% of young men. One of the biggest financial pressure points for young men has been higher rents, which are up around 20% since 2020. The man who died in a Colorado mine elevator accident was a 46-year-old father and tour guide there, officials said Friday as investigators try to understand what exactly occurred. The man killed was identified as Patrick Weier, who worked as a tour guide at the mine. Weier had a 7-year-old son and lived in Victor, a community of less than 400 in the area, officials said. Mikesell said the state does safety inspections and an official from that agency was on scene after the accident Thursday. “I know it has passed its safety inspections,” Mikesell said, but he did not have the dates during Friday’s news conference.

Body parts found in a freezer earlier this year after a Colorado home was sold have been identified as those of the 16-year-old daughter of the home’s previous owner, authorities said Friday. The death of Amanda Leariel Overstreet is being investigated as a homicide and an investigation is ongoing, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office said. The last time Amanda had been seen or heard from was in April 2005, the sheriff’s office said. Amanda lived in the Grand Junction and Harris County, Texas, areas, the coroner’s office said. CNN —Eleven members of an Amish family – including a 1-year-old – were hospitalized in Pennsylvania Friday night after ingesting wild, “toxic mushrooms,” local authorities said. “It was wild mushrooms, but the hospital would have to confirm the type,” Southern York County emergency medical services Chief Laura Taylor told CNN. The fire department and EMS units went to the family Friday night after being told the 11 had “ingested toxic mushrooms and were all ill,” the fire department said in a post on Facebook. The family was transported to WellSpan York Hospital, Taylor told CNN. The Pennsylvania State Police and York County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond for comment.

Amanda Overstreet was identified as the victim through DNA testing, according to a Friday news release from the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office. The remains were discovered by someone who came to the home to pick up the freezer for free, the sheriff’s office said. There is no evidence Overstreet was ever reported missing, and the “circumstances surrounding her disappearance remain under investigation,” the sheriff’s office said. The sheriff’s office didn’t disclose whether a cause of death was identified. “We were all guessing who it was,” he said of the discovered remains.
