However, prices for many physical goods have deflated as supply-and-demand dynamics return to normal following pandemic-era contortions. "Outside of goods prices, I don't think we'll see price cuts," said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's. That served to weaken demand, which also pushed down prices, economists said. Outside of supply-demand dynamics, the U.S. dollar's strength relative to other global currencies has also helped rein in prices for imported goods, economists said. Energy, food and consumer electronicsOutside of imported goods, consumers may also see a "normalization" of prices in food and energy, Zandi said.

CNN —A United Nations inquiry has accused Israel of carrying out a “concerted policy” of destroying the health care system in Gaza during its year-long conflict with Hamas in attacks it said amount to war crimes. Israel’s actions in the besieged Palestinian enclave “constitute the war crimes of willful killing and mistreatment and the crime against humanity of extermination,” the commission said in a statement Thursday. The Israeli foreign ministry rejected “accusations of widespread ill-treatment and torture of detainees,” saying Israel is “fully committed to international legal standards” on treatment of detainees. “Children in particular have borne the brunt of these attacks, suffering both directly and indirectly from the collapse of the health system,” she said. The commission previously alleged that both Israel and Hamas committed war crimes in the early stages of the Gaza war, and that Israel’s actions also amounted to crimes against humanity.

One measure on the ballot in New York state this November means two very different things to its supporters and its opponents. Advocates of the measure argue that it is simply a way to codify New Yorkers’ right to reproductive care. The Coalition to Protect Kids-NY has taken to calling the measure the “Parent Replacement Act.” The group argues that the measure would be used to strip rights from parents and push transgender rights for minors, in particular. The coalition's website includes no articles or other information about the ballot measure seeking to codify a right to abortion. Hochul’s office has helped lead the state’s Democratic Party to spend over $1 million to advertise in favor of the measure, including local ads, campaign yard signs and mailers.

Social Security recipients can expect a 2.5% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) increase in their payments starting in 2025 amid cooling inflation. On Thursday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the 12-month consumer price index inflation rate hit 2.4% in September. The Social Security Administration calculates the annual COLA based on consumer price growth in the months of July, August and September. That, advocates say, is proof that seniors and other Social Security recipients are facing a declining standard of living. “Congress knows this problem is going on, but the gridlock can’t seem to solve anything, much less the third rail of politics that is Social Security,” said Shannon G. Benton, executive director of the Senior Citizens League, an advocacy group.

Obama in past campaigns has relished mocking and criticizing Trump, but his speech and delivery on Thursday were stinging and unusually visceral. His message there was also pointed – but directed at Black men. “We need to make sure that Black men, Hispanic men, don’t sit on the couch.

A limited supply of IV fluid, stemming from damage caused by Hurricane Helene, is forcing some hospitals across the U.S. to postpone elective surgery and other nonemergency procedures to safeguard their stock. He also said the medical center has “doubled down” on efforts to prevent wasting IV fluid, as it’s the area’s only level 1 trauma hospital. A number of IV products, including sodium chloride, dextrose and sterile water, have already been in short supply. The Baxter facility shutdown hasn’t led to any new IV fluid shortages yet, the Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday. On Tuesday, the agency also helped safely move IV products from B. Braun Medical’s Daytona Beach facilities out of the path of Hurricane Milton, Dembner said.

About 3.3% of high school students identify as transgender and another 2.2% have at some point questioned if they were one, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About one-quarter, 26%, of trans and questioning students attempted suicide in the past year compared with 11% of cisgender female students and 5% of cisgender male students, the CDC found. Trans students were also more likely to report being bullied at school, consistent with previous research on the subject. An estimated 40% of trans and questioning students said they were bullied at school, compared to 20.3% of cis female students and 14.8% of cis male students. While Harris has gained ground on stewardship of the economy, Trump still leads in most surveys about the issue, which frequently ranks as the top concern for voters. The Harris campaign and Democratic allies believe she must erode that advantage and at least fight it to a draw. Tim Walz, argued in the recent debate that Trump’s economy was weak even before the Covid-19 pandemic hit. The economic issue is still Trump’s core advantage and one of the only reasons this race is as close as it is.”Still, Harris is performing better than Biden did on the economy against Trump. “People almost always say ‘I hate him but,’ or ‘I like him and’ — ‘but he did a good job on the economy,’ ‘the economy is better under him,’” she said.

Less than a fifth of large companies in the United States include coverage for the popular but pricey weight loss drugs Wegovy and Zepbound in their health insurance plans, according to a survey published Wednesday in Health Affairs. “They’re trying to figure out what is the right balance between the advantages to employees, potential health benefits and the cost of these drugs. The survey found that about half of employers that cover the weight loss drugs have certain requirements associated with their coverage, which Rae said would limit access for some employees but save money. Among large firms that don’t currently cover GLP-1 drugs for weight loss, only about 3% said they’re “very likely” to do so in the next year. Despite the exorbitant cost, employers do have a positive view of the drugs.

Health care may be the answer, if history is any indication. The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV) has posted a November gain in eight of the last 10 years. Health care trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 22.2, while the S & P 500 has a multiple of 24. The optimism around health care comes as the sector lags the broader market. Some health care names poised to do well, according to Krinsky, are Masimo and Viking Therapeutics .

A growing number of employers are considering covering the blockbuster weight-loss drugs, several surveys show. Roughly the same share say they are somewhat or very likely to begin covering these medications for weight loss within the next 12 months, according to KFF’s annual Employer Health Benefits Survey. But only 18% of firms in KFF’s survey, which includes those with 200 or more employees, cover GLP-1 drugs primarily for weight loss. Even employers that provide coverage for anti-obesity drugs often put up guardrails, such as requiring employees to receive prior authorization or to try other weight-loss methods first. Outpatient drug costs are expected to climb 11.4% next year, surpassing the 8% increase projected for medical plan costs, according to Segal’s most recent survey.

Jaap Arriens | NurPhoto via Getty ImagesLONDON — Increasingly many financial services firms are touting the benefits of artificial intelligence when it comes to boosting productivity and overall operational efficiency. Despite bold statements, a lot of companies are failing to produce tangible results, according to Edward J Achtner, the head of generative AI for U.K. banking giant HSBC . One example he gave was a partnership that HSBC has in place with internet search titan Google on the use of AI technology anti-money laundering and fraud mitigation. Boteju stressed that Lloyds is "proceeding with caution" when it comes to exposing the bank's customers to generative AI tools. Generative AI, on the other hand, is a more nascent technology, according to the Lloyds exec.

As state lawmakers have introduced hundreds of bills targeting transgender people, particularly youths, over the last few years, Americans have rarely been able to hear from those most directly affected — trans youths themselves. They wanted to ensure the group was diverse because the trans kids and their families who are often featured in national reporting have been predominantly white. “American Teenager,” which debuts Tuesday, also features religious diversity, challenging the common misconception that being trans conflicts with people’s religious faith, Lang said. For example, Ruby Carnes, who was 19 when Lang spent two weeks with her in Houston, attends an Episcopalian church with her family who identify as Evangelical Christians, Lang said. Some of the young people Lang spent time with describe how gender-affirming medical care has affected their lives.
