But one narrative has quickly taken hold in parts of the right-wing media ecosystem: The security failure was the result of workforce diversity initiatives and women working as Secret Service agents. Matt Walsh, a far-right media personality, wrote a series of posts on the social media platform X assailing the notion of women working as Secret Service agents. “There should not be any women in the Secret Service. “Female agents were also among those guarding Trump’s armored SUV as it prepared to depart the scene,” said Campbell. In the summer of 2022, Kimberly A. Cheatle, who handled global security at PepsiCo, delivered surprising news shortly before a board of directors meeting, according to a colleague at the time: President Biden had asked her to run the Secret Service. The opportunity to return to an agency she had served for a quarter century was one she could not resist, the colleague recalled Ms. Cheatle saying. Now, less than two years later, an assassination attempt on former President Donald J. Trump has thrown her tenure into uncertainty. Since a gunman’s bullet grazed Mr. Trump’s ear at a campaign rally on Saturday, Ms. Cheatle has been forced into an uncomfortable limelight. Critics have questioned how the agency could have missed a man with a gun on a rooftop less than 500 feet from the former president — especially when law enforcement was amassed just below.

Tragedy strikes and traders (or trading algorithms) sniff out a way to make money off of it. Stocks also went on a tear as Covid-19 killed millions and gutted economies across the globe. “The market’s up today, but the market’s up every day,” Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers, tells me. Whether or not the political bump lasts, some traders did seize on the moment to double down on so-called Trump trades. In short, when the yield curve gets steeper, that’s a sign bond traders are nervous.

On Friday, he went to a shooting range where he was a member, and practiced firing, a law enforcement official told CNN. Yet nearly 48 hours after the shooting, investigators are struck by the lack of leads they’re finding about Crooks’ mindset and possible motives. Investigators parsing through his online search history haven’t found any indication of him researching how to make home-made explosives, law enforcement officials said. While investigators had hoped that breakthough would help them understand what drove him to attempt to assassinate Trump, they’re still struggling to make sense of it, law enforcement officials said. But they didn’t seem to know much about what was going on in his life recently, law enforcement sources said.
