McCarthy, though, has stopped short of committing to putting a Senate-passed short-term spending bill on the floor, knowing that doing so could mean a call for his ouster. During a call with the Republican conference Saturday afternoon, McCarthy pushed members to rally around a short-term spending bill that includes funds for border security. That would give House Republicans a position from which to begin negotiations with the Senate. It’s taking away leverage from House Republicans,” said GOP Rep. Garret Graves of Louisiana. But House Republicans marked their bills up at far lower levels after a rebellion from conservatives.

In the past few months alone, researchers have linked Neanderthal DNA to a serious hand disease, the shape of people's noses and various other human traits. Research shows some African populations have almost no Neanderthal DNA, while those from European or Asian backgrounds have 1% to 2%. For example, Neanderthal DNA has been linked to auto-immune diseases like Graves’ disease and rheumatoid arthritis. The list goes on: Research has linked Neanderthal genetic variants to skin and hair color, behavioral traits, skull shape and Type 2 diabetes. Researchers found the skulls of domesticated dogs in Homo sapiens sites much further back in time than anyone had found before.

The House Rules Committee held a rare Saturday session to begin setting up the process for next week's voting. Then, with time running short, the House would turn toward a stopgap measure to keep government open for about a month while work continues. They are insisting on the lower spending levels McCarthy promised the Republican hardliners in January during his own race to become House speaker. And once those House bills are approved, often in round-the-clock voting, they still would go for negotiations with the Senate, which has its own legislation. But if McCarthy joins with Democrats, he will almost certainly face a vote from Gaetz and others for his ouster.

CNN —House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said Saturday he still lacks support from a handful of GOP hardliners to put a Republican stopgap measure on the floor next week, making a government shutdown likely with just one week until the deadline. There are still a few members that won’t vote for funding the government while we finish all the 12 bills. When pressed on whether Americans should expect a government shutdown, McCarthy insisted there is still time. That would give House Republicans a position from which to begin negotiations with the Senate. “I think now some members feeling the pressure of the time line coming up,” McCarthy said.

The new testimony comes as House Republicans begin an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden and his family, potentially undercutting one element of that effort. At issue is an October 2022 meeting between prosecutors and case agents working on the Hunter Biden investigation. But the deal fell apart amid scrutiny from a judge, and Weiss subsequently requested special counsel status. Shapley, a 14-year IRS veteran who oversaw parts of the Hunter Biden probe, alleged in testimony to Congress there was political interference in the investigation. Last week, CNN and others reported on Sobocinski’s testimony, which prompted Shapley’s attorneys to dispute his recollection of the October 2022 meeting.

Human remains found by archaeologists could be from victims of the Tulsa Race Massacre. The remains were found during a dig at grave shafts in Tulsa, Oklahoma, CNN reported. Oklahoma state archaeologist Kary Stackelbeck said that the archaeological team had exposed 22 grave shafts in a video posted on Facebook on Thursday. Stackelbeck said archaeologists had found "fancier or nicer coffins" in some of the other grave shafts, which they did not think were likely to be victims of the massacre. The Tulsa Race Massacre took place from May 31 to June 1, 1921 and was one of the worst incidents of racial violence to have occurred in US history.

Mexican journalist and long-time UFO enthusiast Jaime Maussan showed politicians at the hearing on Tuesday two tiny "bodies" displayed in cases, with three fingers on each hand and elongated heads. He claimed they were found in Peru in 2017 and were not related to any life on Earth. The images from the congressional hearing, the first of its kind in Mexico, sparked international curiosity as well as substantial scorn. Maussan, speaking to Reuters on Thursday, said his critics had yet to present evidence to counter his claims. CNN —The United Nations’ human rights body (UNJHRO) has received reports of at least 13 mass graves” in the Sudanese city of El Geneina, a special envoy to the war-torn country told the UN Security Council Wednesday. The mass graves are believed to contain civilians from the ethnic Masalit tribe who were killed in attacks by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and allied Arab militias, according to Sudan Volker Perthes. The Masalit tribe and other non-Arab communities in Sudan are often targeted by Arab militias, with support from the RSF, according to Human Rights Watch. At least 87 people, mostly ethnic Masalit, were discovered in a mass grave in El-Geneina’s Al-Madaress and Al-Jamarek districts in July.
