Southwest Airlines cuts revenue forecast

A Southwest Airlines jet is parked Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Kehole awaiting passengers on January 20, 2024 in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Southwest Airlines shares fell roughly 4% in premarket trading Wednesday after the carrier cut its second-quarter revenue forecast, citing changing booking patterns. Southwest still expects record quarterly operating revenue in the second quarter. Airlines are raking in record numbers of passengers but higher costs and growth in capacity have weighed on fares and profits. "The reduction in the Company's RASM [revenue per available seat mile] expectations was driven primarily by complexities in adapting its revenue management to current booking patterns in this dynamic environment," Southwest said in a filing.

A sweep of the executive and legislative branches by either Democrats or Republicans in the November election could spell more risk to crypto assets, according to TD Cowen. "Divided government is the best possible outcome for financial firms, housing and crypto as we believe there would be bipartisan legislative and regulatory agreements that could survive future political changes," TD Cowen's Jaret Seiberg wrote in a note Monday. "If Biden wins, a Republican Senate could limit his ability to put aggressive regulators in power," Seiberg added. "Trump would likely have a GOP Senate, but House Democrats could block his legislative agenda. Republican politicians have tended to hold more crypto-friendly views, but the digital currency industry maintains that crypto is a nonpartisan issue.

In Caribou, Maine, a town of 7,400, the splash pad was packed with children at noon on Wednesday as temperatures soared. But next to it, at a cooling center for the rural area’s many elderly residents, all the folding chairs were empty, even though three air-conditioners were blasting a frigid breeze. Officials had spread the word across Aroostook County about the cooling center on social media, on radio stations and TV, and in local newspapers. However in Maine, and across wide areas of rural America, the techniques familiar in cities to help people beat the heat are much more difficult to carry out effectively. Large parts of the nation were boiling this week as temperatures climbed in Maine and other areas that are not accustomed to mid-June heat waves.

AI is replacing human tasks faster than you think

That’s in addition to creative tasks for which some businesses are already relying on ChatGPT and other AI chatbots to assist, including crafting job posts, writing press releases and building marketing campaigns. The findings show companies are increasingly turning to AI to cut costs, boost profits and make their workers more productive. Nearly 60% of all companies (and 84% of large companies) surveyed said that over the past year they have already leaned on software, equipment or technology including AI to automate tasks employees previously did. Bosses are turning to AI for a variety of reasons, including to trim what they are spending on human workers. Human jobs will be replaced — but will be replaced by other humans using AI,” he said.

Social media algorithms have led to a more meritocratic advertising landscape that the industry has been slow to catch up with, according to VaynerMedia CEO Gary Vaynerchuk. "The social media I grew up with... it was more like email marketing," the agency executive told CNBC's Tania Bryer at the Cannes Lions festival, a major fixture in the advertising world's calendar. Vaynerchuk co-founded restaurant booking platform Resy and was an early investor in the X social media platform, formerly known as Twitter. "Now we live in a world of social media over the last two, three years, five years, where the AI algorithms that give you the For You page, the content is finding the audience." CNN —New York’s highest court has declined to hear Donald Trump’s appeal on the gag order in his hush money case, according to a decision list posted Tuesday. The gag order, issued by Judge Juan Merchan in the criminal case against Trump, remains in effect. Separately, Trump has asked Merchan to terminate the gag order ahead of his sentencing scheduled for July. Once that motion is filed, the court will again make a decision on whether to hear the case. If the Court of Appeals did find the gag order unconstitutional, Trump’s attorneys wrote it would “undermine the justification” for the fines Trump received for his violations.

He also seems increasingly interested in Donald Trump, though he won't come out and say he's formally backing him. So here's another reason for him to move more firmly into the Trump camp: The US Securities and Exchange Commission, currently run by Biden appointee Gary Gensler, keeps dogging him. Caveats: The last time the SEC went after Musk, Trump was in the White House, and Trump appointee Jay Clayton was running the SEC. In 2016, the Libertarian Party presidential candidate, Gary Johnson, received more votes than any of the party’s other candidates in history and the most of any third-party candidate since Ross Perot — and arguably, the Libertarian Party has never recovered. Much like the conservative movement, the libertarian movement has been divided between more “normie” libertarians who have embraced criminal justice reform and social freedoms (like immigration and the rights of L.G.B.T.Q. And in 2024, the Libertarian Party Convention featured appearances from people like former President Donald Trump. But in a major surprise, the winner of the party’s presidential nominating process was not the Mises Caucus’s favorite but Chase Oliver, a 38-year-old, gay antiwar activist who had left the Democratic Party. I spoke with Mr. Oliver about what libertarianism means to him today, how he plans to fight for independent votes this year and why the Libertarian Party failed 2020’s “libertarian moment.”

Everybody, including Costco, is chasing Amazon, which accounts for 45% of all U.S. e-commerce sales, according to JPMorgan in a research note Monday. While unlikely to compete at the level of Amazon or Walmart online in the near future, Costco could carve out a lucrative e-commerce lane with its loyal, value-orientated customers. Engaged members want to spend more online at Costco "given the value/quality and cash back," the analysts added. Costco has an "incredible opportunity to better target customers and leverage its rich database of perfect data and is still in its early innings" of e-commerce, JPMorgan said. That’s a typical stretch for Mr. Friedman’s adventures with his architecture and design team, a group of about 20 executives overseeing one of the priciest expansions in the history of American retail. The company is doubling the number of stores, called “galleries” in RH speak, with 35 new ones in the works.
