Ohio Republican Senate candidate Bernie Moreno is facing a wave of criticism over his remarks about suburban women and abortion heading into the homestretch of the competitive race. Moreno said at a town hall in Warren County on Friday that many "suburban women" are "single-issue voters" when it comes to abortion. “You know, the left has a lot of single-issue voters,” Moreno said. “Sadly, by the way, there’s a lot of suburban women, a lot of suburban women that are like, ‘Listen, abortion is it. Top U.S. intelligence officials briefed former President Donald Trump on Tuesday about threats from Iran to assassinate him, a Trump campaign spokesperson said. “Intelligence officials have identified that these continued and coordinated attacks have heightened in the past few months, and law enforcement officials across all agencies are working to ensure President Trump is protected and the election is free from interference." The Secret Service ramped up security around Trump this year when the Biden administration received intelligence about an alleged Iranian plot to assassinate Trump. Trump told the Daily Mail last month that he was refusing intelligence briefings so he would not be accused of leaks. The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

But two experts say the uber-wealthy are often huge contributors to society — and trying to eliminate them could badly backfire. It's become increasingly popular to make claims such as "billionaires shouldn't exist" and "any billionaire is a policy failure." But these moral criticisms of billionaires are unconvincing because people overstate billionaires' power and influence and overlook the benefits of some billionaires. There's a widespread belief that governments should tax billionaires primarily and spend that money on public goods and anti-poverty programs. Instead of saying that every billionaire is a policy failure, we should instead embrace the idea that every billionaire is a policy success.

The retirements were planned before the July 13 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where a would-be assassin shot Trump in the ear, sources tell CNN. However, the departures leave a gap in leadership experience as the agency tries to chart a new path forward. These departures come after Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle stepped down in the days after the rally shooting, as well as the retirement earlier this month of the agency official who oversaw protective operations. A Secret Service agent shot and killed the would-be assassin during the July rally. CNN has reached out to the Secret Service for comment.

MOSCOW Reuters —President Vladimir Putin warned the West on Wednesday that Russia could use nuclear weapons if it was struck with conventional missiles, and that Moscow would consider any assault on it supported by a nuclear power to be a joint attack. The 71-year-old Kremlin chief, the primary decision-maker on Russia’s vast nuclear arsenal, said he wanted to underscore one key change in particular. Russia reserved the right to also use nuclear weapons if it or ally Belarus were the subject of aggression, including by conventional weapons, Putin said. Putin said the clarifications were carefully calibrated and commensurate with the modern military threats facing Russia – confirmation that the nuclear doctrine was changing. Russia’s current published nuclear doctrine, set out in a 2020 decree by Putin, says Russia may use nuclear weapons in case of a nuclear attack by an enemy or a conventional attack that threatens the existence of the state.

While the reputation of the US Secret Service is one of precision, vigilance and security, the reality is more complicated – a high-stress, high-intensity workplace beset by management and logistical issues. (The Secret Service is mandated to protect all foreign heads of state while they are on US soil). “Following the events of July 13, the U.S. Secret Service enhanced our protective model for protectees. According to the Secret Service official, the agency’s attrition rate was 10.26% in fiscal year 2022, 8.78% in 2023, and 8.85% for fiscal year 2024 so far. VATICAN CITY Associated Press —Pope Francis took the unusual decision Wednesday to expel 10 people – a bishop, priests and laypeople – from a troubled Catholic movement in Peru after a Vatican investigation uncovered “sadistic” abuses of power, authority and spirituality. It was announced by the Peruvian Bishops Conference, which posted a statement from the Vatican embassy on its website. The statement was astonishing because it listed abuses uncovered by the Vatican investigation that have rarely if ever been punished canonically — such as hacking someone’s communications — and cited the people the pope held responsible. Victims of Figari’s abuses complained to the Lima archdiocese in 2011, though other claims against him reportedly date to 2000. The investigation, published in 2017, found that Figari sodomized his recruits and forced them to fondle him and one another.

But that information was not relayed to key Secret Service personnel who were interviewed by Senate investigators. The Senate report comes just days after the Secret Service released a five-page document summarizing the key conclusions of a yet-to-be-finalized Secret Service report on what went wrong, and ahead of a Thursday hearing that will be held by a bipartisan House task force investigating the shooting. "This was the result of multiple human failures of the Secret Service," said Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, the top Republican on the panel. Investigators found that many of the people in charge denied that they had responsibility for planning or security failures, and deflected blame. Democrats and Republicans have disagreed on whether to give the Secret Service more money in the wake of its failures.

CNN —Thousands of Florida residents have been forced to evacuate as the state prepares for rapidly strengthening Tropical Storm Helene, which could bring powerful winds, flooding and life-threatening storm surge to areas already hard-hit by recent hurricanes. The Big Bend area faces the most serious storm surge: up to 15 feet of it is possible. Over in Sanibel, one couple who met during Hurricane Ian in 2022 and nearly lost everything are now going to weather Tropical Storm Helene together, CNN affiliate WINK reported. Large clouds move over Havana due to the proximity of the tropical storm Helene, on September 24. Officials in neighboring Pinellas County warned hundreds of homes would likely flood with a higher storm surge than in past destructive storms.

General view of the Towers and oil platforms of the State oil Company of Venezuela, Venezuelan oil Company SA. Oil prices steadied on Wednesday after rising in the previous session on fading excitement for the economic stimulus in China, the world's biggest crude importer, though an industry report showing falling U.S. crude and fuel inventories supported the market. Analysts, however, warned that more fiscal help was needed to boost confidence in the world's second-largest economy, which reduced the initial impact on oil prices from the announcement. Still, declining U.S. crude oil and fuel stockpiles provided some support for the market, which has generally risen since prices fell to their lowest since 2021 on Sept. 10. U.S. oil stockpiles dropped by 4.34 million barrels last week while gasoline inventories fell by 3.44 million barrels and distillate stocks fell by 1.12 million barrels, according to market sources citing American Petroleum Institute figures on Tuesday.

Micron Technology shares surged roughly 14% in after-hours trading after the memory maker forecast higher-than-expected first-quarter revenue due to the thirst for its memory chips used in artificial intelligence computing. HBM is a space-saving, power-efficient type of dynamic random access memory chip, or DRAM, crucial for AI-focused graphics processing units, that aid in processing vast amounts of data. "Demand from data center customers continues to be strong and customer inventory levels are healthy," Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said on a conference call with analysts. The AI boom has also helped Micron cushion the hit from a memory chip inventory glut in PC and smartphone markets. Personal computers infused with AI technologies are expected to have more memory chips, helping firms such as Micron.
