Mr. DeSantis is in the midst of rebooting a presidential campaign. On Saturday, Mr. DeSantis frequently slowed down the pace of a parade in Londonderry, N.H., by stopping to shake hands with onlookers and pose for selfies. Chris Sununu of New Hampshire, a Republican who has clashed with Mr. Trump, said of Mr. DeSantis after the two governors met briefly at the parade. Mr. Trump appears to be skipping the debate, handing Mr. DeSantis an opportunity to take the spotlight. But the former president’s absence also means Mr. DeSantis, as the stand-in front-runner, will most likely come under withering fire from rival candidates.

Nikki Haley of South Carolina, former Vice President Mike Pence, the entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina. Mr. Hutchinson can probably be safely added to the qualified category soon. The Republican National Committee will need to verify his donor numbers, but he has some wiggle room there — he told CNN on Sunday that he had submitted proof of 42,000 contributors.

On and offstage, participants and attendees alike said they believed that defeating President Biden would not be possible as long as the party repeated Mr. Trump’s assertions that the 2020 election was stolen. Georgia will play a pivotal role in the outcome of the general election, both because of recent election outcomes and because the state has the jurisdiction in the most recent Trump indictment. Brian Kemp, one of the few figures who was asked about and who directly addressed Mr. Trump. He still has a solid, double-digit lead over his rivals, according to recent state and national polls. That means that if China’s economy slows down, global economic growth slows down. “When global economic growth slows down, that tends to be negative US equities. But a string of strong economic data has challenged those notions. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues to stoke fears of rising commodity prices, global economic instability and uncertainty around security. CNN —Former President Donald Trump is planning to skip the first Republican presidential debate on Wednesday and is instead expected to sit for an interview with former Fox News Host Tucker Carlson, multiple sources familiar with his plans tell CNN. The timing for the Carlson interview has yet to be determined, the sources said, but it is expected to air around the same time as the debate. The New York Times first reported the details of the Carlson interview. CNN previously reported that Trump was not expected to participate in the debate and that his campaign had engaged in conversations with Carlson about a potential interview as counterprogramming for the event. The second presidential debate is scheduled for September at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California.

For months now, Vivek Ramaswamy has been crisscrossing the early primary states of the 2024 presidential cycle, attracting good crowds with offbeat proposals and a penchant for the media spotlight while gaining little serious attention from his Republican rivals. But after a recent surge in the polls — and a newly revealed debate strategy memo from allies of Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida that singles him out — he is having a well-timed moment, before next week’s first Republican primary debate. The staying power of the Ramaswamy Rise will now be tested by rival candidates loath to see a political novice elevated as the alternative to Donald J. Trump, the front-runner whose legal troubles have snowballed. Polling at this stage of a primary campaign can be fickle, but in polling averages, Mr. Ramaswamy, an entrepreneur and author, has grabbed third place, behind Mr. DeSantis and Mr. Trump, the former president now facing four criminal indictments.

Trump has also criticized Fox, which is hosting the debate, over its recent coverage of him. The first Republican presidential debate next week was already looking like a stern test for Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, who is battling to overcome sagging national poll numbers, a fund-raising crunch and an overhaul of his top campaign staff. The advice on display, which included potential attack lines and debate tactics, could be somewhat condescending — reminding Mr. DeSantis, for example, that he should be “showing emotion” when discussing his wife and children. The disclosure of the documents seemed to leave Mr. DeSantis in something of a no-win situation. Ignoring it may be the likelier route — but could also leave Mr. DeSantis open to criticisms that he failed to meet expectations, for instance, by not taking down Mr. Ramaswamy.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump is expected to surrender himself to the Fulton County jail at the end of next week – on Thursday or Friday, a senior law enforcement official with knowledge of the surrender told CNN. After the 41-count indictment was unsealed, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis set an August 25 deadline for their surrender. Trump’s expected surrender in Georgia comes the same week as the first Republican presidential debate of the 2024 election cycle. Fulton County Sheriff Pat Labat has previously suggested he wants to treat Trump and the others named in the indictment similar to any other defendant. The US Secret Service has been onsite at the Fulton County Jail for the last several weeks working with the Fulton County Sheriff Department and the city of Atlanta in planning for the former president’s surrender, a USSS spokesperson told CNN.

[1/2] Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis speaks next to Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds during a "Fair-Side Chat" hosted by the governor at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines, Iowa, U.S., August 12, 2023. The DeSantis campaign, Never Back Down and Axiom did not immediately respond to requests for comment. DeSantis' campaign, which is in charge of the Florida governor's debate preparations, is under no obligation to accept Never Back Down's advice, and it is unclear if they will. Trump, who is by far the frontrunner, has said he is unlikely to take part in the debate, which will take place in Milwaukee. That leaves DeSantis as the top target on the stage, even as his hold on second place is shrinking.

New York CNN —Michael Burry, the “Big Short” investor who became famous for correctly predicting the epic collapse of the housing market in 2008, has bet more than $1.6 billion on a Wall Street crash. Burry is making his bearish bets against the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100, according to Security Exchange Commission filings released Monday. Burry is using more than 90% of his portfolio to bet on a market downturn, according to the filings. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 have both notched big gains so far this year. While one big payoff doesn’t guarantee future returns, Burry does have a strong investment record.

Trump believes he will be among them and is already fundraising off of the possibility of more criminal charges, casting them as Democratic efforts to interfere in the 2024 election. But there will be key differences between the potential case in Georgia and Trump’s previous indictments. Investigators have long suspected the breach was not an organic effort sprung from sympathetic Trump supporters in the Republican stronghold. Smith, for example, has asked a judge to open a trial into the election interference charges in January – just two weeks before the Iowa caucuses. It’s too early to speculate how headlines about these cases could weigh on Trump or Biden in November 2024.
