Washington CNN —President Joe Biden awarded the United States’ highest civilian honor to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in remarks marking the alliance’s 75th anniversary Tuesday evening, gifting the Norwegian diplomat with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in a surprise ceremony kicking off this week’s NATO summit. Last year, Biden asked Stoltenberg to extend his tenure as NATO secretary general an additional year, citing Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine. Former Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte was formally selected as the next NATO secretary general in late June and will begin the job on October 1. When the Russian war in Ukraine began, you didn’t hesitate,” Biden told Stoltenberg Tuesday. During his own remarks earlier in the event, Stoltenberg urged members of the alliance to continue their support for Ukraine.

For those in the top 1%, who make at least $1 million, that equates to a tax cut of about $70,000, on average, in 2027. The top 0.1%, who make at least $5 million, would pocket a tax cut of nearly $280,000, on average, or about 3% of their after-tax income. The TCJA contained a bevy of individual income and corporate tax reductions, making it one of the largest tax cut packages in US history. Unlike the individual tax provisions, most of the corporate measures are permanent. The deduction, which also expires at the end of 2025, allows these taxpayers to exclude up to 20% of their business income from their federal income tax.

"I think if Chairman Powell had not said, we're gonna get a rate cut, we wouldn't be having these discussions because earnings growth has been really strong. Against that backdrop, Landsberg says, investors should focus on companies generating strong earnings growth. "The major indices are continuing to rally based on strong earnings growth. If some industry experts are right, they could help solve a global labor shortage. Companies like Tesla, Amazon , Microsoft and Nvidia have plowed billions of dollars into what are known as "humanoid" robots. The market for humanoids is set to balloon to $38 billion in the next 20 years, according to an analysis by Goldman Sachs. The firm predicts these robots will be the next "must-have" device, not unlike smartphones or EVs. Goldman also say humanoids may be "vital for manufacturing and dangerous work, but they would also help with elderly care and fill in for labor shortages in factories."

American Madison Keys wept on Court One at Wimbledon as a horrifically timed injury forced her to retire against Jasmine Paolini of Italy. The challenge stood, and the ball had clipped the line by about 4mm, putting Keys down 15-30. Had there been no challenge from Keys, Paolini would likely have challenged herself, but Keys played the ball back into the court, so the point would have been replayed instead of the American losing it. From 15-30, Paolini brought up a break point, and Keys missed a forehand wide while pivoting through the shot onto her left leg, which gave way. Paolini a French Open finalist, defeated by Iga Swiatek; Keys a US Open finalist in 2017, and a Slam semifinalist five more times.

Currently, a 40% federal estate tax applies to estate values topping $13.61 million for individuals and $27.22 million for married couples. When someone dies, their heirs have nine months to file a federal estate tax return if their inheritance meets those minimums. Here's how a Graegin loan could work in practice, according to Doyle:Related storiesHeirs of a $10 million estate could be on the hook for $4 million in federal estate taxes. The taxable estate is $1 million less, which means the family will save $400,000 in estate taxes considering the 40% tax rate. More households will be on the hook for estate taxes, and loans to pay them could become more popular.

Both companies made a splash at this year's upfront presentations, where streamers make their pitches for the nearly $70 billion in annual TV ad spending and advertisers seek to lock down the bulk of their annual TV ad commitments. But among newer streamers, it's Amazon that's winning advertisers' wallets, several ad buyers told Business Insider. AdvertisementAmazon's big increase in ad inventory and lower ad prices, of about half the ad rate ($30 per 1,000 impressions) that Netflix sought when it launched its ad tier in 2022, put pressure on other TV ad sellers to lower their prices. A second ad-holding-company exec said they expected Amazon to be the third or fourth biggest TV ad seller in the upfronts, behind traditional TV stalwarts NBCUniversal and Disney and potentially YouTube. Data has shown that people watch three times as much Netflix as they do Prime Video, although Prime Video viewing is growing.

New York CNN —A federal judge on Wednesday delayed a ban on noncompete agreements from taking effect for a small number of US workers on September 4. Unless the judge makes another ruling before that date, the ban will go into effect for the majority of employers in the US. The ban, which prohibits employers from enforcing noncompete clauses in most existing employment agreements and bans companies from including them in all future ones, was approved by the Federal Trade Commission in April. The FTC estimates that 30 million people — one in five US workers — are bound by a noncompete clause in their current jobs. In response to the order, FTC spokesperson Douglas Farrar said, “The FTC stands by our clear authority, supported by statute and precedent, to issue this rule.

Plug-in hybrid cars accounted for a slightly greater share than battery electric vehicles, and saw faster growth at 39.5% versus 17.7% for battery-only cars. Car companies need to improve the battery charging process, Wan Gang, the man credited with spearheading China's electric car strategy, said at a conference last week. But the court’s opinion also makes clear that this ruling is not a death knell for Smith’s case. Smith charged Trump with engaging in a “criminal scheme” to subvert the 2020 election; Trump has pleaded not guilty to four counts. In Nixon v. Fitzgerald, the Supreme Court held that a president enjoyed civil immunity for all “official acts.” Now, in Trump v. United States, the court grappled with which “official” acts should also receive criminal immunity. In order to settle the extent of Trump’s immunity, Chutkan should expeditiously schedule the mini-trial to hear witness testimony and receive other relevant evidence from both parties. In response to Trump’s assertion of civil immunity there, the DC Circuit put in place a lengthy discovery schedule for the lower court to determine the extent of Trump’s civil immunity.
