At one point Monday morning, bitcoin surged above $30,000 in a sudden spike on an unconfirmed report that the iShares spot bitcoin ETF had been formally approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Cryptocurrencies briefly soared to start the week as hopeful investors weighed the likelihood that the U.S. will finally see a bitcoin ETF in the coming months. Last week, bitcoin had jumped on Friday on news that the SEC would not appeal a ruling in Grayscale's lawsuit against regulators. In June of 2022, Grayscale sued the SEC over its denial of the company's application to convert the popular Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) to an ETF. To be sure, bitcoin is coming off its worst week since Aug. 18 and first negative week in six.

Ferrari shipped more than 1,800 cars to its Americas region, which includes the U.S., in the first half of this year. Galliera did not say how many cars Ferrari expected to sell through crypto. "Prices will not change, no fees, no surcharges if you pay through cryptocurrencies," Galliera said.

Investor appetite for ether futures exchange-traded funds has remained muted, despite a surge in new listings. Six new ether futures funds from Bitwise Asset Management, ProShares and VanEck launched on Oct. 2. Ether made its ETF debut with the release of six different futures products on Monday. ProShares Advisors is behind three of the new ETFs: Ether Strategy ETF (EETH), Bitcoin & Ether Equal Weight Strategy ETF (BETE) and the Bitcoin & Ether Market Cap Weight Strategy ETF (BETH). The regulated futures market in an ETF is a great solution, he added. ProShares also manages the Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO ), which is the largest bitcoin futures ETF on the market. It follows bitcoin futures and is up more than 37% year to date.

Meanwhile, ether is heading for a losing week even after ether futures ETFs began trading, which was expected to be a positive catalyst for the cryptocurrency and digital assets broadly. That represents about 0.2% of the trading volume of bitcoin futures ETFs on their first day of trading, he added. Bitcoin and ether, the "blue chip" coins in the crypto market, are widely seen as high-risk and notoriously volatile assets that sometimes move in tandem with the broader market. Many crypto investors take a longer view on them, however, and may still see them as safe havens. While one group may be concerned that their prices have been stuck this year, the other sees them as resilient in the face of U.S. regulatory uncertainty and rising rates.

Starbucks is selling pumpkin spice latte NFTs to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the seasonal beverage. The $20 digital stamps came out on Thursday via Starbucks Odyssey, the company's Web3 platform. A analysis emerged in September that showed 95% of the NFT market may now be worthless. AdvertisementAdvertisementLast December, Starbucks gifted free NFT stamps to members, and some of those resold for $1,900 each on secondary markets. Starbucks, however, may be an outlier player in the digital asset space as the broader NFT market was recently found to be mostly worthless.

Baron’s book comes at a perilous moment for American democracy and the news media tasked with covering its erosion. I think the coverage of the latest chaos has been very good, based on what I’ve read. The party is proving to be ungovernable, and that is wreaking havoc on the country as a whole. I’d like to see substantially more coverage of what a second Trump administration would do upon taking office. If news organizations believe Donald Trump is a threat to democracy and the country’s framework of government, should they remain totally neutral in covering his candidacy?

Prosecutors now say that Sam Bankman-Fried committed fraud and conspiracy when he oversaw FTX. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe collapse of FTX in 2022 wasn't the result of fraud or a deliberate scheme to steal from customers; it was just the nature of a volatile cryptocurrency market, Sam Bankman-Fried's attorney argued on Wednesday. His attorney, Mark Cohen, argued during opening statements on Wednesday that Bankman-Fried never intended to defraud anyone or mislead customers to get them to invest in FTX. For the first time since 2021, the crypto market overall was worth less than $1 trillion by June 2022. That kind of turbulence is precisely what can overwhelm burgeoning companies like FTX, Cohen tried to argue.

Mr. Bankman-Fried oversaw two core businesses: FTX and a hedge fund called Alameda Research. Alameda was, at least in theory, simply a large customer of FTX that used the platform to trade digital currencies. But according to prosecutors, Mr. Bankman-Fried allowed Alameda to borrow a virtually limitless amount from FTX and then funneled much of that money into other projects. For example, regulators say, Alameda used customer funds to make large loans to FTX executives, who spent the money on political donations. Mr. Bankman-Fried faces an uphill battle in court.
