We need to implement food systems approaches throughout COP28," said Joao Campari, global leader of food practice at the World Wildlife Fund. Doing so could also unlock financial investment in tackling food emissions, said Saswati Bora, global director for regenerative food systems at the Nature Conservancy. TACKLING METHANEA key goal for advocates is reducing methane emissions from food sectors like livestock production and food waste. Countries should also make stronger commitments in NDCs on food waste, said Liz Goodwin, director of food loss and waste at the World Resources Institute. Food waste generates half of all global food system emissions according to a March study published in the journal Nature Food.

Vegan diets may lead to better heart health and slower aging, suggests a new study of twins. 22 pairs of twins tried either vegan or omnivore diets to control for factors like genetics. While vegan diets may be harder to stick to, you don't have to be strictly plant-based to benefit. One member of each pair of twins was randomly assigned a vegan diet, eating exclusively plant-based foods with no meat, eggs, dairy, or other animal products. However, the vegan participants self-reported that they weren't as happy with their food, which could account for the extra weight loss.

REUTERS/Mike Blake//File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsDUBAI, Dec 1 (Reuters) - A United Nations-led effort to use space satellites to detect methane leaks from fossil fuel infrastructure has alerted governments to 127 major methane plumes across four continents since its launch at the start of this year. Environment Programme's (UNEP) Methane Alert and Response System (MARS) was created to support a 2021 global pledge by more than 150 countries to cut methane emissions by 30% by 2030. "Every kilogram of methane matters, but what we can see from our satellites is only the most outrageous of those emissions," said Manfredi Caltagirone, head of UNEP's International Methane Emissions Observatory. While satellites picked up more than 127 major plumes in 2023, some appeared short-lived and therefore too hard to trace, he said. Super-emitting events such as these are responsible for between 8% and 12% of methane emissions from the oil and gas industry.

A vegan diet differs from a vegetarian diet in that it eliminates not only animal flesh but dairy, eggs or any other ingredient derived from animals. In each pair, one twin was assigned a vegan diet, while the other was assigned an omnivore diet. “I feel like a lot of people who do a vegan diet think ‘Oh great, soda is vegan. Cutting back on eating meat and animal byproducts can be done slowly, bit by bit. Harvard’s Hu agreed: “While this study showed a vegan diet may provide additional advantages compared to a healthy omnivorous diet, it does not mean that everyone should become a vegan or vegetarian.

New York CNN —Kraft’s new Mac & Cheese is ditching the cheese and going vegan. “Curiosity is a major factor in trying plant-based foods and beverages,” Sherry Frey, vice president of Total Wellness at NIQ, told CNN. The vegan cheese sauce is made with fava bean protein and coconut oil powder, creating a sauce that has a “similar taste, look and feel to dairy-based mac and cheese,” the company told CNN. Goodles, for example, is a Gal Gadot-backed startup that sells boxed pasta with more protein and fiber at a higher price that also has a plant-based mac and cheese in its portfolio. In particular, the Kraft brand recently rolled out a makeover of its Kraft Singles cheeses that emphasizes the cheese doesn’t have artificial flavors, colors or preservatives.

Testing remained a problem: only private laboratories offered the viral load tests that are necessary to track hepatitis treatment, and they charged several hundred dollars per test. Mr. Musah first began to feel ill as a high school student living in a small town in the north. After hundreds of dollars in tests, he was finally given a hepatitis diagnosis — but was told he would need a specialty hospital to help him. Not every corner of the plant-based food industry has been burned. After the boom-and-bust cycle of Beyond Meat stock, analysts have wondered what comes next for the plant-based food space. The alternative protein market Beyond Meat's struggles have left some skeptical about which companies have what it takes to meet the needs of consumers who want to avoid animal-based products for health or environmental reasons. After topping $230 per share at its highest point, Beyond Meat stock now trades below $7. MOSCOW (AP) — The shelves at Moscow supermarkets are full of fruit and vegetables, cheese and meat. But many of the shoppers look at the selection with dismay as inflation makes their wallets feel empty. The bank now forecasts inflation for the full year, as well as next year, to be about 7.5%. Maxim Blant, a Russian economy analyst based in Latvia, sees that as an indication that prices will continue to rise sharply. That keeps the cost of imports high, even as import possibilities shrink due to Western sanctions.

That’s likely to allow Nestlé, Kraft Heinz and Unilever to see flat or modest increases in 2023 sales, LSEG data shows. Earlier this year, outgoing Kraft Heinz Chief Executive Miguel Patricio said the company lost market share to a branded competitor that spent more.
