States sue TikTok over app's effect on kids' mental health
  + stars: | 2024-10-08 | by ( Dan Mangan | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +5 min
Schwalb's suit alleges a slew of "profound" mental health risks are posed to teens and children by compulsive TikTok use, including depression, anxiety, sleep loss and body dysmorphia. "TikTok knows that its design features make its App more addictive and keep users engaged for longer," the suit in D.C. Superior Court alleges. The complaint also says that in 2019, the company introduced "two new dangerous features": a live-streaming feature called TikTok LIVE and a virtual currency system called TikTok "Coins." TikTok incentivizes users to go LIVE by promising these monetary rewards 'the more popular [their] content becomes.'" The suit says that TikTok "earns substantial revenue" from its Coins, charging commissions of up to 50% on each transaction.

More than 45 million DJT shares were exchanged Tuesday, more than tripling its 30-day average volume. Stock Chart Icon Stock chart icon Trump Media (DJT) Stock PriceThe rally has accelerated since Saturday, when the company's majority owner, Donald Trump, held a presidential campaign rally near Butler, Pennsylvania, at the same site where he was nearly assassinated at a rally on July 13. Musk, the mega-billionaire who owns the social media site X, told the audience that Trump "must win to preserve democracy in America." But the stock price surge also comes despite news about Trump Media that might ordinarily raise concerns about a company's well-being. Neither Trump Media nor Northwall said why he quit, and the company has not announced a successor.

In a fact-bending blast of disinformation, the former president is charging Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden’s White House of the very transgressions of which he stands accused. This is false, but Trump, while president, did repurpose FEMA funds to help finance his hardline immigration policies. But in retrospect, the charade featuring his first White House press secretary Sean Spicer was a harbinger of an administration that bucked fact as an instrument of political power. Trump voters respond to his populism and his evisceration of elites and many sincerely believe he’s a response to a march to the left by the Democratic Party. Both Trump and Harris, who are deadlocked in the polls, are chasing voters who may not habitually follow politics.

In 2022, oil flow in the Strait of Hormuz averaged 21 million barrels per day, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Saul Kavonic, senior research analyst at MST Financial, said supply disruptions along the Strait of Hormuz could send oil prices significantly higher. Oil prices traded more than 3% on Monday, extending gains even after notching their sharpest weekly gain since early 2023 last week. "But seeing where the oil price sits right now the market doesn't seem to hold much probability for such a development at all," he added. "A significant disruption to these flows would be enough to push oil prices to new record highs, surpassing the record high of close to $150/bbl in 2008," he added.

Although she owns a gun, Harris has been a proponent of safer firearms usage and stricter gun ownership laws. Other experts said that leaning into being a gun owner may be a savvy move from Harris' campaign, especially for swing-state voters.

Certain toilet paper, tissue and office paper brands are made with materials from eucalyptus trees, a non-native species to Portugal. CNN PortugalThe problem is eucalyptus trees are particularly flammable. The eucalyptus tree is native to Australia and provides food and shelter to koalas, among other wildlife. As the Portuguese paper and timber industries grew in the mid-1900s, so too did eucalyptus plantations, and the species now covers nearly 2 million acres. In California, the eucalyptus tree has been naturalized, meaning it now grows beyond the places it was planted.

Fulton County, meanwhile, has sued the board, objecting to the push to force it to use election deniers as monitors. “The State Election Board has no statutory authority to force the Fulton County BRE [Board of Registration and Elections] to accept, and Fulton County to pay for, election monitors hand-picked by the State Election Board,” the lawsuit states. But GOP members of the state-election board told CNN neither Germany nor the Carter Center should be allowed to be a monitor because of bias. New York CNN —Google is so synonymous with its core product that its name is a verb that means “search.” Yet Google’s dominance of that market is shrinking. For the first time in decades, Google next year will not control a majority of the US search market, according to a forecast by advertising research firm eMarketer. Google will remain the biggest search player, maintaining a 48% share of American search advertising revenue. That ruling could result in the eventual breakup of the company’s search business. TikTok, the fastest growing social network, is getting into into the search business.
