New York CNN —Boeing said it sold just 14 new jets in the past month, with most of those coming as freighter sales. It had come into the year with a record sales month in December, but sales ground to a virtual halt following the Alaska Air incident. That certification, originally expected this year, has been pushed back to at least 2025 by the problems brought to light by the Alaska Air incident. The company agreed Sunday to plead guilty to its employees defrauding the FAA during the original certification process for the 737 Max. The plane it sold to Alaska Air is also a 737 Max 10 to replace the plane that lost the door plug in January.

CNN —Euro 2024 host Germany was dumped out of the tournament on Friday after a 2-1 quarterfinal defeat by Spain in Stuttgart. With Germany seemingly out of time, Florian Wirtz’s slick finish in the 89th minute kept the tournament host’s hopes alive. However, in extra-time Spain conjured up their own late goal on 119 minutes, Mikel Merino heading home the winner to send the three-time Euros winner to the semifinals. It marks the second successive European Championships in which Spain has reached the semifinals stage while Germany’s run at its home tournament is over. Tournament winners in 1964, 2008 and 2012, Spain will play France or Portugal in the semifinals, with those two teams playing later on Friday in Hamburg.

In an election upset in Iran, the reformist candidate, Masoud Pezeshkian, who advocated for moderate policies at home and improved relations with the West, won the presidential runoff election, beating his hard-line rival, the Ministry of Interior said on Saturday morning. Mr. Pezeshkian, 69, a cardiac surgeon, got 16.3 million votes to defeat the hard-line candidate, Saeed Jalili, delivering a blow to the conservative faction and a major victory for the reformist faction that had been sidelined from politics for the past few years. Mr. Jalili received 13.5 million votes. After polls closed at midnight, turnout stood at 50 percent, about 10 percentage points higher than in the first round of the election with about 30.5 million ballots cast in total, according to Iran’s interior ministry. The first round saw a record-low turnout because many Iranians had boycotted the vote as an act of protest.

London/Berlin CNN —Germany has blocked the sale of a Volkswagen subsidiary to China on national security grounds, delivering a fresh blow to the already tense relationship with its biggest trading partner. MAN Energy Solutions, part of the Volkswagen Group, said in June 2023 that it planned to sell its gas turbines business to Chinese state-owned CSIC Longjiang GH Gas Turbine Co (GHGT). But a German government review, initiated in September, raised concerns that China might use the gas turbines to power warships, according to Reuters. In November 2022, Germany blocked the sale of one of its semiconductor factories to a Chinese-owned tech company, also citing security concerns. “(We) will now initiate a structured process to close-down the gas turbine division, which will take place over the coming months,” the company added in a statement shared with CNN.

Messi missed Argentina’s opener but penalty king Emiliano Martinez saved Argentina’s blushes, stopping Ecuador twice to see his side progress to the last four. Every time Messi floated wide to try to get on the ball in space, Ecuador closed down with multiple defenders. Lisando Martinez, unmarked at the far post, calmly headed the ball into the net to score his first goal for Argentina. Through the first 30 minutes, Ecuador had fairly good control of the game.
