Brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev SA has scored at least a temporary win in the long-running battle over light beer brands’ marketing claims. BBB National Programs’ National Advertising Division, an ad-industry self-regulatory group, determined that Molson Coors Beverage Co. should stop marketing its light beer products by implying that those produced by rivals have little or no flavor. Molson Coors plans to appeal, according to Chief Communications Officer Adam Collins. A final decision in the Molson Coors case should come down next month, she said. In 2019, Molson Coors sued AB InBev over a Super Bowl campaign highlighting the fact that Miller Lite and Coors Light use corn syrup in the brewing process.
Bill Gates bought a $902 million stake in Dutch brewery Heineken's parent company. The billionaire bought a $392 million stake in one of Mexico's largest brewers, Femsa, in 2007. He bought 6.65 million shares of the beer company directly, per the filing, and another 4.18 million shares through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Trust. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment. Long before his Reddit post and the health study, Gates bought a $392 million stake in one of Mexico's largest brewers, Femsa, in 2007.

A Covid-19 trend of drinkers flocking to spirits instead of beer is continuing to pressure brewers, making now a good time to sell shares of Anheuser-Busch InBev , according to UBS. The firm on Thursday downgraded shares of the beverage company to sell from neutral and slashed its price target to €53 from €57. "Our analysis suggests the beer category is unlikely to benefit from deceleration in premium and above spirits," said Oliver. Overall, UBS expects that Anheuser-Busch InBev will struggle to grow in 2023 and 2024 and face an additional currency exchange headwind in the latter year. Deutsche Bank on Thursday also downgraded shares of Anheuser-Busch InBev to hold from buy, saying that the company is still well-placed but is not "broadly fairly valued."
REUTERS/Phil NobleJan 10 (Reuters) - New Zealand supplies of carbon dioxide (CO2), used to fizz drinks and in packaging and hospitals, are having to be rationed because of shortages following the closure of the country's only food-grade CO2 production facility. "We are working collaboratively with suppliers, customers and other industry stakeholders to manage the CO2 supply situation," it added. The rationing is the result of the shut down of a CO2 production facility on west coast of the North Island. To try to fill that gap, CO2 imports almost tripled last year, according to Statistics New Zealand data. Supply chain costs have driven up beer prices. The maker of Corona says customers have started to buy less beer where prices are highest. And for that reason, beer sales are a solid indicator of the state of the economy when inflation is in play. Other players in the beer supply chain, including the stores that sell Modelo and Corona, up their own prices to varying degrees on top of the wholesale price, Newlands explained Thursday. Some supply chain costs are coming down as imports and overall freight demand cool, but those will take time to hit the balance sheet, and then perhaps eventually the shelf.
The Huge Number of Small Breweries Creates a Beer Glut

The long-building craft-beer boom is showing signs of slowing down. Craft beer’s popularity has risen nationwide for more than a decade, and breweries have become a calling card for up-and-coming neighborhoods and communities, giving residents and visitors new places to gather and enjoy a taste of their towns. But in 2023 the smallest number of new breweries in over a decade will open, the Colorado-based trade group Brewers Association predicts.
But the CEO of one of the leading non-alcoholic beer companies said that the demand for non-alcoholic brews is booming well beyond a single month. "This is the moment we've been waiting for in the category," Bill Shufelt, Athletic Brewing CEO, said on CNBC's "Squawk Box "on Wednesday. Long a sleepy category within the broader industry of beer, non-alcoholic beer has seen its growth skyrocket in recent years as bigger beer giants like AB InBev and Heineken launch new products as well as the emergence of independent brewers like Athletic Brewing. The lack of quality non-alcoholic beer options was the impetus for Shufelt, a former trader at Steve Cohen's Point72 Asset Management, to start the Connecticut-based company in 2017, which solely focuses on non-alcoholic brewing. Shufelt said that non-alcoholic beers now make up more than 2% of all beer sold at U.S. grocery stores, and at some national chain retailers, it is upwards of 8% of their beer category.

REUTERS/Issei KatoTOKYO, Dec 21 (Reuters) - Kirin Holdings (2503.T), Japan's second-largest brewer, is looking to buy factory facilities in North America to maintain strong growth in the region's craft beer market, its chief executive said. Kirin has seen sales volumes in the North American craft beer market climb by double-digit percentage figures since acquiring Colorado-based New Belgium Brewing in 2019 and Bell's Brewery in Michigan in 2021. "Our craft beer business in North America is on a roll," CEO Yoshinori Isozaki said in an interview with Reuters on Tuesday. North American craft beer is also now the company's most profitable segment among global businesses that span everything from whisky to probiotic health drinks, he added, without disclosing profit margins. Kirin had craft beer sales of about 60 billion yen ($454 million) in the year ended in March, accounting for 3% of global sales.
UK pubs call for beer duty freeze ahead of tough Christmas
  + stars: | 2022-11-12 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Nov 12 (Reuters) - Britain's pubs want the government's help in keeping prices of a pint affordable this Christmas, as surging inflation is driving up costs for businesses and hampering consumers' purchasing power. The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA), in a letter dated Nov. 11 to finance minister Jeremy Hunt, called on the government to bring back a freeze on beer duty in its budget announcement due on Nov. 17. "We need the beer duty freeze reinstated to alleviate at least some of the cost pressure on our pubs and brewers and to avoid undermining the crucial Alcohol Duty reform measures," Chief Executive of BBPA Emma McClarkin said in a statement on Saturday. The industry body warned that failing to introduce the beer duty freeze would take the tax to its highest ever for the sector, adding that a freeze would channel about 360 million pounds ($423.5 million) back into the industry. The investment gives Keurig a minority position in the beverage startup, which controls over half of the $328.6 million nonalcoholic-beer market. He quit his position at Point72 Asset Management in 2017 and cofounded Athletic Brewing a year later with the head brewer John Walker. Athletic Brewing now controls 45% of the non-alcoholic craft beer market. Athletic Brewing said it distinguishes itself from big beer brewers by being the only brewery in the country dedicated solely to nonalcoholic craft beer. When Louis S. “Tom” Gimbel III was a boy, his father’s side of the family ran the Gimbels department-store chain, including a huge store at Herald Square in Manhattan. His mother’s family brewed Rheingold beer and traded in hops. After graduating from Yale and serving in the Air Force, Mr. Gimbel chose hops over retailing. He joined the family’s S.S. Steiner Inc. in the 1950s, took a crash course in brewing, moved into sales and by the late 1960s, was running the company with his younger brother, Stinor. He later bought his brother’s stake and ran the company on his own.
Budweiser Flows Freely, But There Are Sputters Ahead

Having forged a reputation as a deal maker, the world’s biggest brewer is doing a better job with the brands it already owns. It has less control over rising interest rates and a restless top shareholder, however. Anheuser-Busch InBev the brewing giant behind Budweiser and Stella Artois, said Thursday that sales for the three months through September increased by 12.1% versus the comparable period of 2021. The company’s main rivals also reported healthy numbers this week: Carlsberg grew sales by 11.6%, while Heineken managed 19.8%. Although most of the brewers’ growth came from raising prices to make up for cost inflation, all three also sold more beer than a year ago.
SummarySummary Companies Q3 core profit up 6.5% vs market consensus 5.2%AB InBev says beer market resilientHeineken, Carlsberg voice concerns over European consumersBRUSSELS, Oct 27 (Reuters) - Anheuser-Busch InBev (ABI.BR), the world's largest brewer, reported higher-than-expected quarterly earnings on Thursday as beer sales accelerated, and raised its 2022 outlook to the top-end of its previous forecast range. Third-quarter core profit - earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation - rose 6.5% on a like-for-like basis to $5.31 billion, above the 5.2% climb forecast by analysts in a company-compiled poll. The company said it now expects its core profit to rise by between 6% and 8%. EUROPEAN CONSUMER PINCHAB InBev's largest rivals, far more reliant on Europe, gave a more cautious view of the beer market. For it and Heineken, Europe represented at least 50% of their third-quarter business, against less than 15% for AB InBev.
The maker of Europe's top-selling beer Heineken, along with Sol and Tiger lagers said beer volumes rose by 8.9% on a like-for-like basis in the third quarter, with the strongest increase in Asia, but compared with the 12.0% average market expectation. RBC Capital Markets, which has an 'underperform' rating for Heineken, said Europe's 1.3% sales increase clearly missed expectations. Heineken reported a 68% increase in its beer sales in the Asia-Pacific region in the July-Sept period, a year on from COVID-19 lockdowns, notably in its main Asian market Vietnam. Unlike in other regions, beer sales in Europe remain below 2019 levels. Heineken said pressure on disposable income was in part to blame for a decline in sales in Nigeria, although its premium beer sales rose by more than a third.
