CNN —Boar’s Head will close the Virginia plant that produced deli meat products tied to a deadly listeria outbreak, the company said on Friday. The move is part of several changes made after what it called a “dark moment in our company’s history.” Boar’s Head said it will permanently discontinue sales of liverwurst after an investigation found its production process was the root cause of the listeria contamination. It will also appoint a new food safety officer and food safety council made up of independent industry experts. But a USDA Notice of Suspension for the Virginia facility, shared by Boar’s Head, describes “inadequate controls” that allowed equipment and employees to move throughout the facility, potentially spreading bacteria. Michael Proctor, the Massachusetts state trooper suspended over his conduct while he was investigating Karen Read, will not testify in another high-profile case on which he was a lead investigator, prosecutors said. The department devoted dozens of additional officers to investigating the case, the filing says. The filing cites Proctor’s testimony in the Read case, in which he testified that he made derogatory comments about Read to his family, friends and supervisors, and it says the prosecutor’s office is reviewing data extracted from the trooper’s cellphone. The agency had opened an internal affairs investigation into allegations of "serious misconduct" raised at trial, a state police official said at the time. He pleaded guilty to wire fraud, interstate transportation for a scheme to defraud and unlawful monetary transaction, the prosecutor's office said.

Justin Wayne Halstenberg, 34, is alleged to have set off three different fires last week, San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus said Thursday. One of those fires evolved into the Line Fire, that has continued to burn after eight days, while the other two were contained. According to Dicus, investigators were able to tie Halstenberg to the scene of all three fires. The investigation was indicative of “significant arson behavior” and it is possible Halstenberg could be tied to other fires, Dicus said. If convicted on the aggravated arson charge, Halstenberg could be sentenced between 10 years to life in prison.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said he will not use his platform to endorse a presidential candidate, despite Donald Trump saying the Super Bowl champ's wife, Brittany Mahomes, is a "big MAGA fan." Trump responded saying in a phone interview Wednesday on "Fox and Friends" that he is "not a Taylor Swift fan." She's a big Trump fan," he said. That was not the first time Trump mentioned Brittany Mahomes, who has become close with Swift after the pop star began dating Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. The man whose teen son is accused of killing four people at a Georgia high school asked a judge on Wednesday for protection from fellow inmates due to the “incalculable number of threats” he faces behind bars. Gray needs to be separated from other inmates being held by the Barrow County Sheriff's Office, his lawyers Jimmy Berry and Brian Hobbs wrote. Last week's shooting has impacted almost everyone in the city of Winder and greater Barrow County, defense lawyers said. “In fact, so many lives in the community of Barrow County have been touched in unfathomable ways, it would be reckless to assume there are NO inmates, either currently or in the near future, being housed in the Barrow County Detention, who wish to harm the Defendant." A representative for the Barrow County Sheriff's Office could not be immediately reached for comment on Thursday.

The federal government and many state governments are passing laws and regulations designed to reduce our use of fossil fuels and increase renewable energy production. Now let's talk about energy production. Big picture, America's production of oil, natural gas, and renewables is growing with natural gas growing most of all. In 1950, natural gas was about 18% of total US energy production. As for oil, US domestic crude oil production has more than doubled since 2000.

Washington CNN —Mortgage rates fell this week to the lowest point since February 2023, in a welcome sign for Americans grappling with a tough housing market. The standard, 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.20% in the week ended September 12, mortgage financing giant Freddie Mac said Thursday. Mortgage rates started to drop early last month on news affirming lower interest rates in the future, specifically after a weaker-than-expected jobs report for July, and have gradually edged lower since. “Mortgage rates have fallen more than half a percent over the last six weeks and are at their lowest level since February 2023,” Sam Khater, Freddie Mac’s chief economist, said in a release. The Fed doesn’t directly set mortgage rates, but its action do influence them through movements in bond yields.

And for Trump, flipping Pennsylvania — a state he narrowly won in 2016 but lost in 2020 — would give him a broader path to winning back the White House. Trump tried to bring fracking into focusIn 2019, when Harris was running for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, she voiced support for a ban on hydraulic fracturing — or fracking. And recognizing the political potency of the issue, Harris on Tuesday sought to distance herself from her past comments by pointing to her record as vice president. From 1992 to 2012, only Democratic presidential nominees carried the state. In the state's Real Clear Politics polling average, Harris and Trump are both currently tied at 47.6% support.
