The Israeli military said its air force had struck what it described as Hezbollah targets in Kfar Kila and killed a Hezbollah leader in Deir Siriane. Hezbollah has fired thousands of rockets and drones at Israel, saying it was acting in solidarity with Hamas, which is also backed by Iran. Hamas and Iran have accused Israel of assassinating Mr. Haniyeh, but Israel has not publicly taken responsibility for that killing. Iran, Hezbollah and Hamas have vowed to retaliate against Israel. For now, the developments appear to have derailed any prospect, however remote, of a cease-fire between Hamas and Israel.

Ukrainian military says it attacked Russian airfield, oil depots
  + stars: | 2024-08-03 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
Ukraine's military said on Saturday it had attacked Russia's Morozovsk airfield and a number of oil depots and fuel storage facilities in three Russian regions overnight. The attack on the airfield hit an ammunition depot where Russian forces stored guided aerial bombs among other equipment, the military said. The attack on oil depots and fuel and lubricant storage facilities in Belgorod, Kursk and Rostov regions set fire to at least two oil tanks, according to the Ukrainian military report. The regional governor of Belgorod also said Ukraine-launched drones caused a fire at an oil storage depot there, adding that the fire was extinguished and no one was injured. Ukraine has dramatically stepped up its use of long-range drones this year to attack Russian oil facilities, attempting to damage sites fueling Russian forces and the country's economy in Moscow's 29-month-old invasion.

Shares of Nextracker dropped in extended trading Thursday as questions about the solar technology firm's backlog of projects overshadowed its better-than-expected quarterly results. Scrutiny of Nextracker's revenue backlog came more into focus during Nextracker's conference call with analysts. That, in turn, impacts the pace at which Nextracker's backlog becomes reported revenue. With interest rate cuts on the horizon, the economics of solar projects should get a whole lot better. Shares of Carvana jumped as much as 14% during after-hours trading Wednesday as the company topped Wall Street's expectations for the second quarter and disclosed expectations for record adjusted earnings of at least $1 billion for 2024. The company's previous guidance for the year included a "sequential increase in adjusted EBITDA" for the second half of the year, but did not supply a dollar amount. If Carvana meets its 2024 earnings target, it would mark the company's third annual EDBITDA profit, including 2023's record of $339 million. Adjusted EBITDA was $355 million and adjusted EBITDA margin was 10.4%, both company records. The second-quarter results continue a massive turnaround for Carvana following Wall Street fears of bankruptcy for the company in early 2022.

Kyiv, Ukraine CNN —Russia has launched one of the largest drone attacks on Ukraine since the war began, mainly targeting overnight the region in and around the capital Kyiv, according to the Ukrainian military, which said all 89 drones fired were shot down. Dramatic video released by the Ukrainian Air Force shows one drone on fire, falling from the sky and landing in a field — causing a large cloud of smoke but no visible damage. “Just like then, today the Ukrainian air defense has withstood and repelled a massive attack by enemy drones,” he said. Since then, Ukraine has repeatedly pleaded for allies to provide more air defense systems. We need sufficiently courageous decisions from our partners — enough air defense systems, enough range,” Zelensky added.

Washington CNN —Secret Service acting Director Ronald Rowe provided new details about the assassination attempt of Donald Trump on Tuesday, delivering forceful testimony at a Senate hearing about the agency’s failures earlier this month in Butler, Pennsylvania. But at the joint hearing of the Judiciary and Homeland Security committees, Rowe also highlighted the missteps of local law enforcement on July 13, when the former president was shot. Moving forward, Rowe told the committees, his agency will avoid assuming local law enforcement agencies are fully capable of fulfilling their role in protecting an event. Rowe told the lawmakers that local law enforcement was positioned in a nearby building and should have had a clear line of sight of Crooks on the roof. Tobra claimed that the account in question was “pro-Biden.”The Gab account has also not been conclusively connected to Crooks.

Tensions were running high on both sides of the Israel-Lebanon border on Monday in anticipation of an escalation in hostilities, after Israel’s security cabinet authorized its leaders to decide on the nature and timing of an Israeli military response to a deadly rocket attack from Lebanon last weekend. The Israeli military said overnight that its aerial defense systems successfully intercepted an unmanned aircraft that crossed from Lebanon into northwestern Israel. The Israeli military did not immediately comment on those attacks. Hezbollah has denied responsibility for the rocket attack Saturday that struck a soccer field in Majdal Shams. But the Israeli military said the type of rocket used in the attack is Iranian-made and carries more than 50 kilograms (110 pounds) of explosives.
