Investors deliberating whether the stock rally can continue in the second half of 2024 should keep an eye on the 200-day moving average, according to Stephen Suttmeier, technical research strategist at Bank of America Securities. The indicator, which is used by chart analysts to determine long-term trends, has been positive during the first six months of the year — as the S & P 500 surged 15% to record levels. The broad market index did not have a single daily close below its 200-day moving average in the first half. However, if the S & P 500 falls below its 200-day moving average in the second half of 2024, that will mean weaker returns, the technician said. "[This] scenario shows average and median returns of 0.60% (SPX 5490) and 2.43% (SPX 5590), respectively," the technician said.

But other key programs were not made whole, including a popular and free preschool program for 3-year-olds. This budget is particularly significant for Mr. Adams, a Democrat who is running for re-election in a competitive primary next June. Mr. Adams has insisted that major budget cuts were necessary to help offset the costs of the migrant crisis, new union contracts for city workers and the ending of federal pandemic aid. The mayor and the City Council speaker, Adrienne Adams, adopted a celebratory tone at the announcement at City Hall, smiling and holding a model airplane to show that they had “landed the plane” as promised. Mr. Adams said they had found comity to fund important programs as the city faces major financial challenges.

Even better: The fact that the S & P 500 has performed so well this year makes the outlook sweeter. In years with the S & P 500 climbing more than 10% in the first six months, it jumped 7.9% in the typical second half. Jurors in Los Angeles agreed with the plaintiffs that the NFL conspired with member teams to artificially inflate the price of “Sunday Ticket” for millions of residential and commercial subscribers. The jury awarded $4.6 billion to a residential class, and $96 million to commercial subscribers such as bars and restaurants, according to an attorney for the plaintiffs. A judge could award triple damages under US antitrust law, bringing the total judgment to more than $14 billion. The plaintiffs are DirecTV subscribers who bought “NFL Sunday Ticket” between June 2011 and February 2023. The case includes at least 2.4 million residential customers and 48,000 commercial subscribers like bars and restaurants, according to court records.

Miodrag Ignjatovic | E+ | Getty ImagesAmericans firing up their grills for Fourth of July celebrations will likely pay more for some traditional barbecue staples this year. The average cookout for 10 people will cost $71.22 this year, up 5% from 2023 and about 30% five years ago, according to an American Farm Bureau Federation estimate. That said, consumers have seen prices fall for some specific barbecue items like chicken breast and potatoes, the Farm Bureau said. Meat (including ground beef, pork chops and chicken breast) accounts for 50% of the total cost of an Independence Day barbecue, according to the Farm Bureau. Two pounds of potatoes cost $1.53, down 17%, the Farm Bureau said.

must pay almost $5 billion in damages for artificially inflating the price of Sunday Ticket, a subscription service offered by DirecTV that showed out-of-market games, a federal jury in Los Angeles decided on Thursday. Damages in antitrust cases like this are tripled by law, which means the league may have to pay more than $14 billion. The jury’s damages were most of what the plaintiffs lawyers were seeking. “We are disappointed with the jury’s verdict today in the N.F.L. Sunday Ticket class action lawsuit,” Brian McCarthy, a league spokesman, said in a statement.

The jeans creator on Wednesday posted fiscal second quarter revenue that fell just short of Wall Street's expectations at a time when shoppers are stocking their wardrobes with denim dresses, skirts and ultra-low-rise baggy pants. It's not clear how sales at Docker's were affected by the timing of Levi's wholesale orders. The changes are necessary because nearly half of Levi's sales these days are coming from its own website and stores. During the quarter, wholesale revenue grew 7%, but excluding the shift in timing of wholesale orders, sales in the channel decreased 4%. Singh noted that wholesale revenue improved on a sequential basis, but the company has a "conservative" view of the channel's growth moving forward.

If history is a guide, that suggests the S&P 500 could surge 4% next month to record highs, according to Goldman Sachs. Goldman SachsWhat's more, recent market trends show that July as a whole has been incredibly bullish for the stock market. If similar seasonal trends play out this year, a near-4% gain would catapult the S&P 500 to a new record at 5,665 based on current levels. As to what could drive more bullish returns over the coming weeks, Rubner highlighted that a record cash pile of more than $7 trillion sitting in money market funds could soon flood the market.

Home prices set another record in April, even as mortgage rates rose and the supply of homes for sale increased. Usually, under those circumstances, prices would weaken, but today's housing market is unlike any other in recent history. The housing cost burden has hit a record, according to a new report from Harvard's Joint Center for Housing Studies. Housing supply was already low before the Covid pandemic hit, because homebuilders had yet to recover from the 2008 financial crisis. Then there was a pandemic-induced run on housing, causing supply to drop to record lows for several years.

"Our upgrade largely reflects our more bullish stance on natural gas prices," analyst Bill Selesky told clients in a research note Thursday. Demand for natural gas should rise due to hot weather conditions and the transition from coal to gas, while supply is constrained and inventories are low, the analyst said. The pipeline operator has rallied as natural gas prices have bounced back 70% over the past two months.
