Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin extended the tour of the aircraft carrier strike group now operating near Israel, the Pentagon said Tuesday. The aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, and its accompanying ships were in the eastern Mediterranean on Oct. 7 when Hamas attacked Israel. Soon after, the U.S. ordered the strike group to move toward Israel to deter regional actors from taking advantage of the potential instability. The Ford first left its homeport in May and was scheduled to be on a six-month deployment. The Pentagon didn’t say how long Austin extended the ships’ tour for.

GM postpones electric truck production

CNN —General Motors is putting off adding a second factory for production of its electric pickups until late 2025, the automaker announced Tuesday. But GM had planned to start producing the electric pickups at an additional Michigan factory, Orion Assembly just north of Detroit, as well. Instead, when those electric vehicles go out of production at the end of this year, the factory will not shift quickly to making the trucks. General MotorsGM’s decision will result in fewer electric pickups being built next year but the automaker declined to discuss the extent of a reduction. GM had announced, in 2022, that it would spend $4 billion to convert Orion Assembly to make the electric trucks.

On Tuesday, more ships and forces were heading toward Israel, and other troops in the U.S. were preparing to deploy if called on. The buildup reflects growing U.S. concern that the deadly fighting between Hamas and Israel will escalate into wider regional conflict. The Pentagon has said those troops are not participating in any hostage rescues and there are no other U.S. military forces on the ground in Israel. The move is the latest sign that electric vehicle production and demand may not be as strong as forecast. GM had been set to begin production of the electric Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra in late 2024 at the suburban Detroit plant. Ford said in July it would slow the ramp-up of electric vehicle production and forecast a full-year loss of $4.5 billion on its EV unit. GM still plans a significant boost in EV production in 2024 including adding a new shift at a Detroit-Hamtramck factory that is currently building EV SUVs and pickup trucks. General Motors said on Tuesday it still plans to end production of the Chevrolet Bolt EV at the end of 2023.

Ford, who has been a part of UAW negotiations since 1982, pleaded with union members and leaders to work with the company, instead of against it, to reach a tentative deal to "end to this acrimonious round of talks." Such comments by the great-grandson of company founder Henry Ford are uncharacteristic during contract talks with UAW. Ford, ahead of speaking on stage, told reporters he wanted to "elevate" the conversation about the contract negotiations. This should not be Ford versus the UAW," Ford said. Some of their sharpest exchanges during the televised debate, however, came when asked to lay out their stands on abortion. Their remarks, which took place about three weeks before the Nov. 7 election, came against the backdrop of Kentucky's current abortion law, which bans the procedure except when carried out to save a pregnant woman’s life or to prevent a disabling injury. Cameron went on the attack by pointing to Beshear’s opposition to abortion restrictions passed by the state’s GOP-dominated legislature. Beshear also made another pitch for his plan for state-funded pre-K for every 4-year-old in Kentucky. Beshear criticized Cameron for supporting a Republican-backed measure to award tax credits for donations supporting private school tuition.

President Joe Biden is expected to travel to Israel on Wednesday to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu – a visit rife with risk and one that projects the depth of America’s commitment to support Israel while underscoring the precarious state of affairs in the Middle East. Biden was originally invited to Egypt over the weekend to participate in a summit to discuss the future of Palestinians. Blinken also announced late Monday that the U.S. reached an agreement with Israel about how to do just that – though details were scarce. The Israel Defense Forces began staging tanks and troops along the Gaza border on Thursday and ordered roughly 1 million residents to evacuate Gaza City on Friday. Over the weekend, Israeli forces and Hezbollah fighters exchanged rocket fire that left at least seven people dead, including four members of Hezbollah.

Footage released by the IDF showed members of the navy's "Snapir" unit fighting off Hamas militants. The IDF said militants "were swimming toward the shoreline in an attempt to infiltrate Israel by sea." The Palestinian militant group Hamas' sea attack came as part of a wider wave of surprise attacks by land, sea, and air on October 7. The footage appears to show Israeli troops shooting and throwing grenades or depth charges from Defender-class boats at Hamas fighters. The insurgents on-board were thrown into the Mediterranean Sea and then attempted to swim toward the coast, the IDF said.

The newest U.S. aircraft carrier - and the world's largest - is already in the eastern Mediterranean and set to be joined by a second U.S. aircraft carrier in the next 10 days. While the White House says there are "no plans or intentions" for their use, it means U.S. military assets would be in place to provide air support to protect U.S. national security interests if needed. The U.S. also has an array of bases in the Middle East with troops, fighter aircraft and warships. "That said, we take our national security interests seriously and we have ample military force in the region to protect and defend those interests as needed," Kirby added. Any decision to launch military action in the Middle East would come from U.S. President Joe Biden, a Democract, himself.

Judges can threaten gag order violators with fines or jail time, but jailing a presidential candidate could prompt serious political blowback and pose logistical hurdles. A gag order may also slow down the case because it's likely Trump either violates it and the judge will want to punish him or Trump will challenge the order in advance, he said. In one case, a federal appeals court in 1987 lifted a gag order on U.S. Rep. Harold Ford Sr., a Tennessee Democrat charged in a fraud case. Ford’s gag order prohibited him from even sharing his opinion of or discussing facts of the case. He said he was dubious that Trump’s attacks, “while in very poor taste,” posed the kind of danger to merit a gag order.
