Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin extended the tour of the aircraft carrier strike group now operating near Israel, the Pentagon said Tuesday. The aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, and its accompanying ships were in the eastern Mediterranean on Oct. 7 when Hamas attacked Israel. Soon after, the U.S. ordered the strike group to move toward Israel to deter regional actors from taking advantage of the potential instability. The Ford first left its homeport in May and was scheduled to be on a six-month deployment. The Pentagon didn’t say how long Austin extended the ships’ tour for.

CNN —General Motors is putting off adding a second factory for production of its electric pickups until late 2025, the automaker announced Tuesday. But GM had planned to start producing the electric pickups at an additional Michigan factory, Orion Assembly just north of Detroit, as well. Instead, when those electric vehicles go out of production at the end of this year, the factory will not shift quickly to making the trucks. General MotorsGM’s decision will result in fewer electric pickups being built next year but the automaker declined to discuss the extent of a reduction. GM had announced, in 2022, that it would spend $4 billion to convert Orion Assembly to make the electric trucks.

On Tuesday, more ships and forces were heading toward Israel, and other troops in the U.S. were preparing to deploy if called on. The buildup reflects growing U.S. concern that the deadly fighting between Hamas and Israel will escalate into wider regional conflict. The move is the latest sign that electric vehicle production and demand may not be as strong as forecast. GM had been set to begin production of the electric Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra in late 2024 at the suburban Detroit plant. Ford said in July it would slow the ramp-up of electric vehicle production and forecast a full-year loss of $4.5 billion on its EV unit. GM will report third-quarter results Oct. 24, with Ford following on Oct. 26. The strikes have costing GM and Ford more than $500 million, JP Morgan analyst Ryan Brinkman estimated in a note Monday. The newest U.S. aircraft carrier - and the world's largest - is already in the eastern Mediterranean and set to be joined by a second U.S. aircraft carrier in the next 10 days. While the White House says there are "no plans or intentions" for their use, it means U.S. military assets would be in place to provide air support to protect U.S. national security interests if needed. The U.S. also has an array of bases in the Middle East with troops, fighter aircraft and warships. "That said, we take our national security interests seriously and we have ample military force in the region to protect and defend those interests as needed," Kirby added. Any decision to launch military action in the Middle East would come from U.S. President Joe Biden, a Democract, himself.
