United States Supreme Court Associate Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson. Alex Wong/Getty ImagesJustice Ketanji Brown Jackson warned that absolute immunity could turn the Oval Office into "the seat of criminal activity in this country." She said there would no incentive for presidents to follow the law while in the White House if they could never face criminal prosecution. "There are lots of people who have to make life and death decisions" and still face the risk of criminal prosecution, she said. I think that we would have a really significant opposite problem if the president wasn’t chilled," she said.

A demonstrator holding a sign holds up a fist after students built a protest encampment in support of Palestinians at the University of Southern California's Alumni Park on April 24, in Los Angeles, California. David Swanson/ReutersTensions escalated once police entered the University of Southern California campus, according to Jonathan Park, an editor of the Daily Trojan, the college’s newspaper. “When we saw the LAPD coming in from Vermont Avenue and working with campus officers, encircling on them, it definitely changed the mood,” Park told CNN’s Anna Coren. The Los Angeles Police Department said 93 people were later arrested on suspicion of trespassing during Wednesday's demonstrations at USC. There are also wider calls to cut ties with Israeli academic institutions and to cut funding from entities connected to Israel.

Macao, the Chinese special administrative region (SAR) often twinned with Hong Kong, is known as the Las Vegas of Asia. But travelers who are willing to dig in a little deeper can explore Macanese culture, which mixes Portuguese, Chinese and Southeast Asian heritages. Macao is comprised of two islands – the north one, Macao itself, and its southern neighbor Taipa. “In Asia, [people] think that Macao is full of casinos, and I think they do not understand the other parts of Macao,” says Lai. That means that they can live in Macao without a work visa and do not need a company sponsoring them.

Guido Mieth | DigitalVision | Getty ImagesBorrowers hoping for student loan forgiveness have just a few more days to act before an April 30 deadline. Those payments are typically lower than under the standard repayment plan, and can be zero in some cases. Usually, a student loan consolidation restarts a borrowers' forgiveness timeline, making it a terrible move for those working toward cancellation. What to know about consolidating your student loansAll federal student loans are eligible for consolidation, including Federal Family Education Loans, Parent Plus loans and Perkins Loans, Kantrowitz said. Honeywell shares are under pressure Thursday, despite the industrial conglomerate exceeding expectations for first-quarter sales and earnings. The culprits: Softer guidance for the current quarter and some uncertainty about a recovery in some of its key businesses. Honeywell Why we own it: Honeywell is a provider of industrial technology solutions to companies in various industries. Building automation was down year over year as growth in the longer-cycle solutions business was offset by continued weakness in the shorter-cycle products business. If Nemat Shafik, the president of Columbia University, has convinced the world of anything during these last several calamitous days, it is almost certainly that there is no position in American executive life as thankless, as depleting or less enviable than running a major academic institution in an age of chronic, reflexive agitation. Criticized for capitulating to congressional Republicans in a hearing on antisemitism last week, she quickly found she had not been nearly ingratiating enough. “There is a pretty broad consensus that bringing in the police was precipitous and counterproductive,” Christopher Brown, a history professor who spoke at the rally, told me. In the spring of 1968, Columbia’s president, Grayson Kirk, rarely depicted without a pipe, moved in comparatively slow motion in response to unrest that had become an inflection point in the wave of campus activism that was redirecting history. Within days, students had occupied five buildings, seized the president’s office and taken Dean Henry Coleman hostage, holding him in his office for 26 hours.

A tactical buy signal just flashed in the stock market, according to JPMorgan's trading desk. AdvertisementA tactical buy signal just flashed in the stock market, according to a Tuesday note from JPMorgan's trading desk. The buy signal suggests that the S&P 500 could jump 3% within the next 20 days, which would put the index within spitting distance of its all-time high. But a bullish buy signal isn't enough to push the stock market higher on its own, JPMorgan's trading desk admitted. Instead, for this most recent buy signal to be successful, corporate first-quarter earnings will have to deliver and geopolitical tensions will have to cool down.

Europe’s central bankers are trying to get out of the shadow of the United States. Now, European Central Bank policymakers are emphasizing how much the inflation problem has eased in the eurozone. The E.C.B., which sets interest rates for all 20 countries that use the euro, has signaled it could cut rates at its next policy meeting in early June. “We’re clearly in a disinflation process,” said Gabriel Makhlouf, governor of Ireland’s central bank and one of the 26 members of the E.C.B.’s governing council.

What to Know About Venice’s Fees for Day Trips
  + stars: | 2024-04-25 | by ( Elisabetta Povoledo | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
After years of debate, Venice on Thursday will begin charging day visitors five euros to visit its fragile historic center on peak days, making it the first city in the world to adopt such a measure to counter overtourism. Critics question whether a nominal fee will put people off from visiting one of the world’s most desired destinations. But officials hope that it might encourage some to rethink their plans and decide to come on weekdays or in the off-season. About half of those visitors came only for the day, city officials said. The spirit of the initiative, city officials have said, is to make people aware of the uniqueness — and fragility — of Venice.

24 many years. This is the method which is pursued in France, and it is claimed that entire justice is more apt to be done where such course is pursued than where it is omitted. The common law of England, however, has adopted another and, so far as the party accused is concerned, a much more merciful doctrine. By that law the criminal is to be presumed innocent until [their] guilt is made to appear, beyond a reasonable doubt, to a jury of 12 [].
