London CNN —Mining giant BHP has made a near-$40 billion bid to take over its UK rival Anglo American in what would be the largest mining deal on record. BHP said in a statement Thursday that it valued Anglo American shares at £25.08 ($31.40) apiece, or £31.1 billion ($38.9 billion) in total. The potential deal would have a higher value than the $38.3 billion acquisition of Switzerland’s Xstrata by commodities company Glencore in 2012, according to Dealogic data. It would also be the biggest merger or acquisition in the mining industry by value since Dealogic began collecting the data in 2004. Shares in Anglo American soared as much as 13.8% on the news.

The startup, Read AI, closed a $21 million Series A funding round in April. Goodwater Capital led the round, with participation from existing investor Madrona Venture Group, which led the startup's $10 million seed round in 2021. David Shin, who co-founded Read AI alongside Robert Williams and Elliott Waldron, told Business Insider that the generative AI boom over the last year has supercharged what the startup can offer clients. Read AI offers multiple pricing plans, including a basic, free version for individual users as well as enterprise and enterprise plus accounts that cost $22.50 and $29.75 a month per user, respectively. Greenlight Capital's David Einhorn continued to pick up new stocks in the first quarter, including Penn Entertainment , as the longtime value investor struggles to find opportunities in the volatile market. He established the stake at an average cost of $22.69 per share, but the stock has fallen to $17.44 as of Wednesday. Still, Einhorn said sports betting, if executed right, could take the shares much higher. "Were the market to credit PENN with merely 15% of DraftKings' value, that segment alone would be worth $20 per share." Q4 buyer's strike Einhorn had stopped building new stock positions at one point in the fourth quarter, saying he was on a "buyer's strike" due to worries about intensifying geopolitical risks.
