Palestinians flee from Rafah, Gaza Strip, on May 6. Ramadan Abed/ReutersPalestinian civilians told to evacuate eastern Rafah by the Israeli military have described their fear and despair at being uprooted from their homes and shelters, as Israel airstrikes hit Gaza’s southernmost city. “We left because they distributed leaflets,” Mohammed Ghanem, a resident in eastern Rafah told a CNN stringer in the area on Monday. Another woman from eastern Rafah said, “The Israelis sent us messages ordering us to leave. In a statement, the office of Israel’s prime minister said the country’s war cabinet had “unanimously decided” to continue with the Rafah operation “to exert military pressure on Hamas.”Read the full story.

The Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque is part of the UNESCO-listed Qutb Minar complex. Scientists both in India and abroad began studying the iron pillar in Delhi in 1912 to try to figure out why it hadn’t corroded. Stuart Forster/ShutterstockBeyond its metallurgical intrigue, the origin of the Iron Pillar is also veiled in mystery. In the epic poem “Prithviraj Raso,” penned by Chand Bardai, a courtier in the Chahamana dynasty under King Prithviraj Chauhan, the Iron Pillar holds great significance. “Bardai describes the Iron Pillar in Raso as a nail holding the Earth on the hoof of Sheshnag, the serpent king in Hindu mythology,” says Vikramjit.

Last year in the second quarter, Disney+ and Hulu lost $587 million. The thesis among all major legacy media companies has been that streaming will eventually take over for cable TV as the primary money-making engine. It's not just that Disney nearly made money in streaming — it's that the company's traditional linear TV results were awful. Next year, Disney will launch its flagship ESPN streaming service, which will allow consumers to subscribe to ESPN without cable at all. Looking at Disney's results in the second quarter, it's clear why the company has finally pulled the ripcord on ESPN.

In a Surprise, Disney+ Becomes Profitable
  + stars: | 2024-05-07 | by ( Brooks Barnes | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
When Disney reported robust earnings in February, the activist investors then circling the company essentially called it a stunt — a temporary, heat-of-battle effort to fend them off and not, as Robert A. Iger maintained, proof that a struggling Disney had finally “turned the corner.”The Disney chief’s argument just got a lot stronger. Disney blew past Wall Street’s expectations for a second consecutive quarter on Tuesday, in part because its flagship streaming service made money — a first. Disney+ had been expected to lose more than $100 million in the most recent quarter, widening losses since its 2019 arrival to roughly $12 billion. The company had previously predicted that Disney+ would become profitable in September; some investors and analysts have been skeptical about that, putting downward pressure on Disney shares. Disney’s per-share earnings for the most recent quarter rose 30 percent increase from a year ago.

Read previewA former Fidelity financial advisor has accused the brokerage of unlawfully firing him after filing a whistleblower complaint. Fidelity ranked branch managers by the number of client assets in more expensive investments such as stock-managed accounts, Maeker said. Financial advisors who did not score highly were awarded little to no stock or threatened to be fired, Meaker said. This race to zero has led to more pressure on high-fee products, as Maeker's branch manager told him. In turn, financial advisors were pushed to sell more Tier 3 investments by awarding 10 times the amount of compensation for Tier 3 investments versus Tier 1.

The independent Oversight Board that hears appeals about content decisions on Facebook and Instagram said Tuesday it would consider whether the pro-Palestinian phrase "from the river to the sea" violates the platforms' rules including their ban on hate speech. In each of the three cases, other Facebook users reported the phrase, saying it violated platform rules on hate speech, incitement or violent organizations. The users opposed to the phrase then appealed to the Oversight Board. One of the Facebook posts being reviewed by the Oversight Board received about 8 million views, the board said. In one of its most significant decisions, the Oversight Board in 2021 upheld the suspension of former President Donald Trump from Meta's platforms but ruled that it was inappropriate to make the ban indefinite.

Every Gala has a dress code, which is tethered to the exhibition. All of which makes it easy to forget this is actually an important fund-raiser for one of New York’s cultural pillars: the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. It was once a free-standing museum, but when it merged with the Met in 1946, part of the deal was that the Costume Institute would have to pay for itself. Hence the gala, which raises all the funds for the institute’s operating budget. The Costume Institute itself has historically been housed in the museum’s basement — a clear statement about its status at the museum.

Disney posted its earnings for the first quarter on Tuesday. The entertainment giant beat Wall Street forecasts for the fourth consecutive quarter. Related storiesThe stock was up close to 30% this year at Monday's close, but a combination of the revenue miss and weaker-than-expected subscriber numbers for Disney's streaming business probably sparked the early-morning sell-off, according to analysts. Disney expects its streaming business, Disney Plus, to turn a profit for the first time in the fourth quarter, but total subscriber numbers of 153.6 million fell short of analysts' expectations. Streaming losses narrowed to just $18 million, down from $659 million this time last year.

The yen continued to drift lower against the dollar on Tuesday as gaping interest rate differentials weighed on the currency, despite fresh warnings from Japanese officials following two rounds of suspected dollar-selling intervention last week. The U.S. dollar gained 0.22% to 154.235 yen in early Asian trading, adding to its 0.58% rally from Monday. The Aussie edged up 0.17% to $0.6636, heading back towards the high of $0.6650 from Friday, a level last seen on March 8. All but one of the 37 economists surveyed in a Reuters poll expect the RBA to keep rates on hold, with the other predicting a quarter point rate hike, amid stubbornly high inflation. But now that extra spending money is gone, economists are concerned about what comes next. That means many Americans have more debt than savings and suggests “that American households fully spent their pandemic-era savings as of March 2024,” they wrote in a recent report. Consumer spending plays a crucial role in driving economic growth in the United States, and it has shown remarkable strength over the past two years. “A continuing strong labor market could help consumers maintain spending patterns similar to those observed recently, even without pandemic-era savings,” they wrote. What comes next: Disney, Airbnb, Uber, Anheuser-Busch, Tapestry and Dillards all report later this week — investors will look for any comments about how consumer spending, or lack thereof, is altering revenue forecasts for 2024.
