Marcy Donnelly and Chris Buerger, 50 and 52, combined their last names when they wed in 2000. AdvertisementThis as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Marcy Donnager. It started as a joke, then we realized it made senseNone of it seemed real, so we made up names for ourselves. But our adopted names didn't suit our last names, Donnelly and Buerger. Then, once we had our marriage certificate, we used it in the court proceeding to legally change our names to Donnager.

FTX will pay back 98% of creditors at least 118% of what they're owed, its bankruptcy lawyers said. But payments will be based on crypto values in 2022, not what its worth now as the prices surge. FTX predicts it will have between $14.5 and $16.3 billion available for distribution — mostly from previous Alameda and FTX Ventures investments, bankruptcy lawyers said. FTX founder Sam Bankman-fried was arrested in January 2023 and convicted last fall of fraud, conspiracy, and money laundering. The jury was not allowed to consider any bankruptcy activities in rendering its verdict — though the judge factored into his sentencing that FTX lawyers said victims would recover their losses.

A large Russian missile and drone assault caused serious damage to several power plants across Ukraine early Wednesday, Ukrainian officials said. Ukraine’s largest private electricity company, DTEK, said in a statement that three thermal power plants had been hit, further straining Ukraine’s electricity generation capacity, which was already reeling from previous assaults. Ukrenergo, Ukraine’s national electricity company, said that it might have to cut power to some domestic and industrial customers on Wednesday evening as a result. “You have to be prepared for this,” Volodymyr Kudritskyi, the head of Ukrenergo, told the Ukrainian news media. The attacks have hit Ukraine at a particularly difficult moment.

I've always known that my parents were older than the parents — and occasionally even the grandparents — of my peers. Having older parents than my peers was both rewarding and challenging while growing up. Almost any child with older parents, regardless of the generation they were born into, can tell you they've imagined what taking care of their parents would look like. To my surprise, many of my Gen Z friends knew exactly what I was going through. You rarely tell the "outside" — be it your extended family or friends, what's going on "inside" — or in the home.

UBS logo is seen at the office building in Krakow, Poland on February 22, 2024. UBS on Tuesday reported a swing back to profit after two quarterly losses as it smashed first-quarter expectations, with results bolstered by higher wealth management revenues. Lower expenses and consolidation benefits following the takeover of Credit Suisse in June 2023 also helped the bank post a net profit of $1.8 billion in the first quarter, ahead of a consensus forecast in an LSEG poll of $721.4 million. The Swiss banking giant is continuing to process the mammoth integration of its former rival. The firm said Tuesday that it expects to complete the merger of UBS AG and Credit Suisse AG into a single U.S. intermediate holding company in the second quarter, and the merger of its Swiss entities in the third quarter.

Disney Why we own it: We value Disney for its best-in-class experiential entertainment Parks business, which has proven to have immense pricing power. In the second quarter, the combined business — Disney+, India's Disney+ Hotstar, Hulu and ESPN+ — saw losses of $18 million, far better than the $659 million loss in the year-ago period. DTC profitability benefited from Disney+ core subscriber growth, higher retail subscription prices, increased advertising revenue on the back of higher impressions, and lower distribution costs. Clearly, Disney still has a big opportunity in sports as they execute on their DTC streaming strategy for ESPN. The firm reiterated an outperform rating on the restaurant chain stock and listed it as a top pick. Oppenheimer's $34 per share price target implies nearly 50% upside from Monday's $22.74 close. Yen eases despite intervention threat, Aussie steady before RBA

The yen continued to drift lower against the dollar on Tuesday as gaping interest rate differentials weighed on the currency, despite fresh warnings from Japanese officials following two rounds of suspected dollar-selling intervention last week. The U.S. dollar gained 0.22% to 154.235 yen in early Asian trading, adding to its 0.58% rally from Monday. The Aussie edged up 0.17% to $0.6636, heading back towards the high of $0.6650 from Friday, a level last seen on March 8. All but one of the 37 economists surveyed in a Reuters poll expect the RBA to keep rates on hold, with the other predicting a quarter point rate hike, amid stubbornly high inflation. Every Gala has a dress code, which is tethered to the exhibition. All of which makes it easy to forget this is actually an important fund-raiser for one of New York’s cultural pillars: the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. It was once a free-standing museum, but when it merged with the Met in 1946, part of the deal was that the Costume Institute would have to pay for itself. Hence the gala, which raises all the funds for the institute’s operating budget. The Costume Institute itself has historically been housed in the museum’s basement — a clear statement about its status at the museum.

In a Surprise, Disney+ Becomes Profitable
  + stars: | 2024-05-07 | by ( Brooks Barnes | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
When Disney reported robust earnings in February, the activist investors then circling the company essentially called it a stunt — a temporary, heat-of-battle effort to fend them off and not, as Robert A. Iger maintained, proof that a struggling Disney had finally “turned the corner.”The Disney chief’s argument just got a lot stronger. Disney blew past Wall Street’s expectations for a second consecutive quarter on Tuesday, in part because its flagship streaming service made money — a first. Disney+ had been expected to lose more than $100 million in the most recent quarter, widening losses since its 2019 arrival to roughly $12 billion. The company had previously predicted that Disney+ would become profitable in September; some investors and analysts have been skeptical about that, putting downward pressure on Disney shares. Disney’s per-share earnings for the most recent quarter rose 30 percent increase from a year ago.
