Antonio canceled his flight on Friday, hours before it was scheduled to depart, heeding public health warnings that a nationwide dispersal of college students heading home for the holidays could fuel a deadly wave of infections. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control warn that if college students go home for Thanksgiving, they should be considered guests and families should wear masks, stay six feet apart and open windows to mitigate the infection risk. “We didn’t trust that a test was enough.”For some students, last-minute COVID-19 testing before leaving campus derailed their travel. Efforts by college students to limit their interactions with friends at home could save lives this winter, said Aaron Milstone, an epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins University. “All that mixing is what exacerbates this.”Still, the heightened restrictions at home have caused some friction in families.

Before the event, a local drag racer had warned via Facebook Live that Black Lives Matter was coming “to bring hate to our town,” according to BuzzFeed. Black Lives Matter protesters, encircled by police, from right, and counter protesters, from left, meet along East Plane Street in Bethel, Ohio on June 15, 2020. The actions of the Minneapolis police reminded them of the corrupt, brutal authorities back in India, Kaur recalled. The group’s youth summer program, which usually visits Pismo Beach for a week, instead held discussions via Zoom on Black Lives Matter. “I see Kevin on the side of the road — what’s he doing?” he recalled one of them saying.

How Not to Overspend This Black Friday

In a year characterized by an unremitting and unfortunate strangeness, it’s no surprise that Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2020 fit right in. Black Friday “preview” promotions started weeks early in mid-October, hot on the heels of Amazon Prime Day, which had been bumped from its traditional mid-July time slot to Oct. 13 and 14. Retailers began a rotating slate of sales, trumpeting that the best Black Friday deals were actually the early deals. Keep a list (and think beyond tech)Lots of things will go on sale during Black Friday, but there’s no bargain in buying something on sale that you never needed in the first place. Make a list of the items you’re looking for so you don’t get sucked in by countdown timers and you-need-this-now marketing language intended to create pressure.

Kristen Stewart on 'gray area' of only gay actors playing gay characters

In Clea DuVall’s “Happiest Season,” Kristen Stewart plays Abby, an art history Ph.D. student whose girlfriend, Harper (Mackenzie Davis), has invited her home for Christmas. And I’ve always loved her — I was kind of shocked that she’s so good at comedy, at writing something funny. Whatever a queer female couple is to the masses, who aren’t necessarily accustomed to that living in their homes for Christmas, I really wanted these people to feel completely lived in and self-realized. Like, I really, really like her. There are a lot of people who feel it’s important that gay actors play gay characters, after so many years of that not being the case.

No-deal Brexit would have a more lasting effect on UK than COVID: BoE's Bailey

Tolga Akmen/Pool via REUTERSLONDON (Reuters) - Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey said on Monday a no-deal Brexit would cause longer-term damage to Britain’s economy than the COVID-19 pandemic, and the impact of the change might be felt for decades. London and Brussels remain locked in negotiations ahead of the Dec. 31 expiry of Britain’s Brexit transition period. Bailey said he was “at the rather more optimistic end” about the impact of COVID, beyond its short-term shock which the BoE thinks will cause a record 11% contraction of Britain’s economy this year. “It’s hard to put a multiple on it as you say, but I think you’re basically right to say that in that scenario you would expect a longer-term effect from the exit trade agreement,” Bailey said.

Obama also seems to have eschewed tactics embraced by other presidents who also wrote their own books. He has admitted to struggling to keep a consistent diary while in the White House, a useful aid for past presidential memoirists. Jimmy Carter drew heavily on his diaries to write “Keeping Faith,” which came out a brisk 21 months after he left office. “His discipline allowed him to write it quickly,” said Alter, the author of a new biography of Carter. So to borrow a page out of their book, I storyboarded every single frame of this movie by hand before we started shooting. Every single shot inside this room here is repeated from an earlier shot in the movie. We’re landing on a shot of Kiera in a stage on a set where the roof is actually flat and the walls are tilted to the side. And this shot sort of was actually the first shot that we did on day one of shooting.

Three insurance industry leaders who spoke at the Future of Insurance USA conference said during a panel hosted by Reuters Events on Tuesday that they are working to fix what they described as diversity shortcomings in the industry. At the age of 24, I was arrested for the fourth time in 11 months — each time for drug possession and for driving under the influence of drugs. In my experience working in addiction treatment since becoming clean, I’ve seen firsthand the devastating effects incarceration can have on drug addicts. The reality is that incarcerating small-time drug offenders is actively contributing to America’s drug problem because of drug use and lack of treatment in prison. Thanks to the referendum that passed on Nov. 3, Oregon is now the first state to decriminalize small amounts of heroin and other hard drugs.
