Chey Tae-won was told by a Seoul court to pay 1.38 trillion Korean won to his estranged wife, Roh Soh-yeong. Prior local reports suggested Roh was seeking around 2 trillion won as part of a settlement and some of Chey's shares in SK Inc. The final settlement is lower, perhaps explaining the jump in SK Inc. shares, which eventually closed more than 9% higher in Seoul.

The time is now to put an end to the controversy around eating dog meat, party members have said, adding there was broad support from the opposition party, which currently controls parliament, and from the public. A Gallup Korea poll last year showed almost two-thirds of respondents opposed eating dog meat, with only 8% saying they had eaten dog within the past year, down from 27% in 2015. The farmers scuffled with police who outnumbered them and set up barricades to stop them from crossing the street to move closer to the presidential office. While the practice of eating dog meat has declined in popularity, the farmers and restaurant owners who serve the meat have been fighting to keep it legal. The farmers have accused First Lady Kim, a vocal critic of dog meat consumption, of exercising what they call improper pressure on the government and the ruling party to bring in the ban.

On the western side of Maui, some residents fled by swimming into the ocean, where they were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard, Maui County officials said. Netflix shared exclusive new details for the second season of its runaway hit South Korean thriller series “Squid Game” on Saturday, as part of its Tudum Global Fan Event in Brazil. A new teaser for the second season of “Squid Game” announced both returning and new cast members, with series lead Lee Jung-jae, playing cash-strapped everyman Seong Gi-hun, back for a second round. Standout cast member Oh Yeong-su, who played the elderly and unassuming Oh Il-nam in the first season of “Squid Game,” has yet to be confirmed as a returning cast member, even though his involvement in the game was revealed to be a bit more complicated at the end of the show’s first season. It was not immediately clear if the transfer by Chairman Chey Tae-won would include stock in the group's holding company, SK Inc (034730.KS). Kim Hyeon-jung, a judge of the Seoul Family Court, said the estranged wife, Roh Soh-yeong, would also receive alimony of 100 million won. Chey holds 17.5% of SK Inc, the company's regulatory filings show, with a value of 2.7 trillion won at Monday's closing price.
