An Alaska Airlines plane was forced to abort takeoff at Nashville International Airport in Tennessee after a Southwest Airlines flight was cleared to cross from the same runway, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Alaska Airlines Flight 369 was headed to Seattle on Thursday morning and had received clearance to take off from air traffic control, the airline said in a statement, when Southwest Airlines Flight 2029 was cleared to cross the end of the same runway, the FAA said. The Alaska pilots had to brake so hard and fast that the tires on their plane blew out, the airline said. Damaged tires on the Alaska Airlines jet at the Nashville, Tenn., airport after takeoff was aborted Thursday. It said it sent another plane to Nashville to take them to Seattle on Thursday night.

BEIJING — Eastern China is baking under unseasonably high temperatures, with the excessive heat expected to linger in mega coastal cities in the highly industrialized provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang for up to 10 more days. In the east and northwest of China, temperatures as high as 43.9 degrees Celsius (111.02 degrees Fahrenheit) have scorched Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Anhui and Xinjiang in recent days, state broadcaster CCTV said. The city of 12.5 million people is expected to swelter under temperatures exceeding 104F through Sunday. Jiangsu’s observatory issued a red warning for heat on Sunday after high temperatures that had persisted for more than a week further intensified. To account for that gap, Julius Caesar in 45 BC decreed that an extra day be added every four years, leading to the Julian calendar. Pope Gregory XIII in 1582 AD created the Gregorian calendar, coined the term “leap year” and established February 29 as the official leap day. He adds that a leap day can also help marginally raise corporate earnings, since companies get an extra day in a fiscal quarter to operate. History shows that stocks tend to perform worse when an additional day is added to the calendar.

NEW YORK (AP) — Nearly four years after Harvey Weinstein was convicted of rape and sent to prison, New York’s highest court will hear arguments Wednesday in his quest to overturn the landmark #MeToo-era verdict. The New York Court of Appeals agreed last year to take Weinstein’s case after an intermediate appellate court upheld his conviction. His New York trial drew intense publicity, with protesters chanting “rapist” outside the courthouse. That evidence would have served “only to make the jury hate Weinstein,” his lawyers said. During oral arguments, Judge Sallie Manzanet-Daniels said that Burke had let prosecutors pile on with “incredibly prejudicial testimony” from additional witnesses.

Most of Kosovo uses the euro, even though the country isn't part of the EU. But parts of Kosovo's north, populated mostly by ethnic Serbs, continue to use the dinar. The Central Bank reported on Wednesday that Serbian bank Komercijalna Banka AD Beograd closed its branches in Kosovo. Serbian forces fought a 1998-99 war with ethnic Albanian separatists in what was then the province of Kosovo. Kosovo eventually declared independence in 2008, but the government in Belgrade doesn't recognize its neighbor as a separate country.

I’m gutted to see Condé Nast folding the online music magazine Pitchfork into GQ. I won’t try to improve on the eulogies written for the site already (Casey Newton and Eric Harvey have good ones). It’s one of the few corners of the internet I still love, no matter how often I find myself in disagreement. I’ve seen some thoughtful writing already on why Pitchfork couldn’t make it. In this case, they’re specific to Pitchfork’s editorial choices and market position.
