Read previewTry as he might to corral the chaotic GOP caucus, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson's job as a leader is impossible with the current crop of Republicans in Congress. Johnson had only been in Congress for six years before he took the spotlight in October 2023 as the replacement for ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy. And given how traumatizing finding a replacement for McCarthy was, Republican representatives don't seem too eager to go down that tumultuous road again any time soon. AdvertisementJoining leadership well after the House rules were established, it's difficult for him — or any other GOP speaker — to implement any changes until the next congressional session.

"The burden is on Letitia James to find Trump's assets" and decide what she wants garnished or auctioned, he said. D'Orazio predicts James would first target the cash that Trump and the Trump Organization keep in New York-registered bank accounts. He would then remit $95 million to the Attorney General's Office, and that would go toward paying Trump's judgment.

“It’s a type of criminal liability that you can get in trouble for things that other people do,” said Ashleigh Merchant, a Georgia criminal defense attorney with experience in RICO cases. And she’ll be navigating around a federal prosecution of Trump for his 2020 election reversal schemes that has taken a much narrower approach. Here are the strengths and weaknesses of Willis’ strategy:Georgia’s sweeping RICO lawGeorgia’s version of a RICO law – which stands for Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act – is broader than the federal counterpart. Additionally, there is not much appellate case law around the state’s RICO statute, criminal defense attorneys in Georgia told CNN. There stands to be a significant overlap in evidence – including with testimony from some of the same witnesses – in the federal and Georgia cases.

Investors love short-term rentals, but they face pitfalls with property management and regulation. Rove, a marketplace and property-management startup, helps investors underwrite short-term rentals. Jonah Hanig, the CEO of Rove, walked Insider through the pitch deck Rove used to raise $4 million. "In Park City, Utah, there are roughly 500 properties for sale, but only approximately 100 are in areas where you can use them as short-term rentals," Hanig told Insider. The ultimate goal is to create "Zillow" for short-term rentals with the added feature of underwritng and valuing properties based on their potential incomes.
Meta let go of 11,000 employees, and it's not clear which divisions and roles were most affected. After a harrowing week of record layoffs at Meta, CEO Mark Zuckerberg and other executives convened a town hall meeting on Friday for everyone who survived the cull. During the Q&A part of the call, an employee asked a question referring to Twitter's job cuts, and Zuckerberg weighed in, according to people who attended. Roughly 11,000 staff were let go, the first major job cuts in the company's 18-year history. Analysts at Jefferies called it a "Zuck U-Turn" in a research note to clients, saying the job cuts will boost profits while not impacting Meta's growth trajectory.
The move went stunningly wrong, crushing the shares of Facebook parent company Meta. What really surprised Wall Street were the other steps Zuckerberg is taking:Meta extended its hiring freeze through the first quarter of 2023. This one by Zuckerberg ranks at or near the top, with the analyst calling it "the biggest two week pivot we've ever seen." For Zuckerberg, Meta and even Silicon Valley, this is another sign that the eras of abundance and founder-friendly investing are ending. For Wall Street, this all came about two weeks too late.
Nearly half of those parents, 47%, say the pandemic has negatively affected their kids’ mental health, with 17% saying it had a major negative impact. Mental health providers who specialize in care for kids are concentrated in urban areas but missing from rural communities. One, TeamUp for Children, has placed full-time mental health providers in seven federally qualified health centers around the Boston area. She says this model – integrating mental health services into primary care – is being copied to varying degrees in pilot projects across the country. The KFF CNN Mental Health Survey was conducted by SSRS from July 28 through August 9 among a random national sample of 2,004 adults.
