The S & P 500 is a mere 1.2% from its all-time high, yet only 60% of its member stocks are up for the year and just over 40% last week were above their 50-day moving average. .SPX YTD mountain S & P 500, 1-year We seem to undergo one of these periods of decrying a lack of market breadth every few months in recent years. Bespoke Investment Group last week looked at the small number of past instances when the S & P 500 was so close to a record yet most stocks were beneath a 50-day average. The 100-day correlation between the S & P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average has hit its lowest level since the dot-com bust of the early 2000s, according to CNBC's Data & Analytics group. The S & P 500 at the highs hit 21-times forward earnings, and we've spent very little time above that outside the pandemic melt-up and the tech boom/bust a quarter-century ago.

The dollar was stable on Wednesday on wagers the Federal Reserve is unlikely to cut rates until later this year ahead of crucial inflation readings this week, while the yen drifted to its weakest in four weeks. The 61-year-old Silicon Valley veteran running Nvidia has overseen a $2 trillion surge in its value since the start of last year. Justin Sullivan/Getty ImagesThe hype behind Nvidia's chips is no joke. But competitors have been busy developing AI chips of their own to reduce reliance on Nvidia's increasingly expensive offerings. AMD CEO Lisa Su, who's Huang's cousin, is aiming to pry Nvidia customers away with a chip named the MI300X that costs between $10,000 and $15,000. If they succeed in using Triton, they could be one step closer to a future in which alternatives to Nvidia's chips are easier to use.

This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. I opened X and saw a string of tweets of people who had just experienced a rare East Coast earthquake. As a lifelong East Coast resident, I've never gotten to feel a real earthquake, and I am absolutely furious that I missed this. I propose we get a new earthquake next weekend, at the American Dream Mall in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Mars may be 140 million miles away, but its gravitational pull could be impacting Earth's oceans. Scientists at the University of Sydney in Australia believe the red planet's tug is creating "giant whirlpools" in the oceans called eddies, which can shift the deep-sea floor. This, they claim, is part of a 2.4-million-year climate "grand cycle" on Earth that has been ongoing for at least 40 million years. The red planet's orbit and ours are locked in an intricate dance, and every so often, these line up so that Mars' gravitational pull on Earth is just a little more intense — this is called resonance. This information is crucial when refining models helping us see how our planet's intricate climate will progress over time.

Across much of America and especially in the normally chilly north, the country went through the winter months without, well, winter. The Lower 48 states averaged 37.6 degrees (3.1 degrees Celsius), which is 5.4 degrees (3 degrees Celsius) above average. But Iowa blew past its warmest February by 2 degrees, while parts of Minnesota were 20 degrees warmer than average for all of February, Gleason said. A strong ridge of high pressure kept the eastern United States warm and dry, while California kept getting hit with atmospheric rivers, she said. Declining inflation rates and consistent growth should create a solid background for stocks and other risky assets, even though some bouts of volatility are likely, according to Goldman Sachs. Broadly speaking, a "soft landing [is] on track," the firm said in a client note in which Goldman market experts said they expect the Federal Reserve soon to make a nod toward an easing in monetary policy that also will be market-positive. "The broad data still points firmly in the direction of easing inflation pressure and resilient growth, especially in the US," wrote Dominic Wilson, senior advisor in Goldman's Global Markets Research Group. But we still think it makes sense to fade those pullbacks and expect US equities and credit to make new highs, as they have been." "This week's FOMC meeting will need to remove the tightening bias to keep March alive, as the [Bank of Canada] did last week, but is unlikely to preview a March cut," Wilson wrote.

Dollar wobbles; yuan on guard ahead of China data dump

The dollar ebbed on Monday on renewed expectations of a rate cut by the Federal Reserve in March, while the Chinese yuan struggled near a one-month low ahead of a slew of economic data this week. The offshore yuan languished near a one-month low of 7.1925 per dollar hit on Friday, and was last at 7.1861 per dollar. "I think more PBOC (People's Bank of China) easing is coming this year," said Carol Kong, a currency strategist at Commonwealth Bank of Australia. "I don't think (Monday's move) will materially weigh on the (yuan) because a rate cut is more or less priced in. The Australian dollar , often used as a liquid proxy for the yuan, edged 0.07% higher to $0.6690.

Airline investors have reason to grab the barf bag
  + stars: | 2023-12-04 | by ( Jonathan Guilford | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
NEW YORK, Dec 4 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Lately, when airlines suggest a thrilling deal, investors are left feeling queasy. Look at Alaska Air (ALK.N), whose shares cratered 15% on Monday after announcing the acquisition of struggling Hawaiian (HA.O). As happened when first Frontier (ULCC.O) and JetBlue Airways (JBLU.O) bid for Spirit Airlines (SAVE.N) in 2022, though, the buyer’s shareholders are balking. But it suggests that, by tying up, smaller airlines risk combining their woes. The deal comes as a lawsuit by the Department of Justice looking to block the merger of Spirit Airlines and JetBlue Airways heads to closing arguments on Dec. 5.

She left her husband for the shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, largely giving up performing in the process. When Onassis eventually married Jackie Kennedy instead, Callas was alone and bereft, without either the vocation that had given her purpose or the man who had replaced it. There was always that sense of every phrase being considered, without feeling studied — of a voice with a purpose. But among the most pernicious stereotypes about Callas is that she was an actress who could barely sing, who got by on charisma alone. Listen to her tender “O mio babbino caro.” Listen to her delicate yet commanding “D’amor sull’ali rosee.” She was always a bel canto singer at heart.

Americans have put big renovations and discretionary home-improvement projects on the back burner as they battle sticky inflation, higher interest rates and lingering caution around the economy. "We see great (customer) engagement... with smaller projects," CEO Ted Decker said on an earnings call. Per-share profit of $3.81 topped estimates of $3.76. "With continued pressure in certain big-ticket discretionary categories and a trend to smaller projects, HD took the conservative approach – which we agree with," Evercore analyst Greg Melich said. The dollar index declined more than 1% last week, its heaviest fall since mid-July and hit a six-week low. World stocks (.MIWD00000PUS) too had their strongest week in a year as expectations the Fed was done raising rates gathered steam. "So it's good then there is expectation for the Fed and other central banks to end the rate hike cycle sooner." Treasury yields slumped last week after softness in U.S. jobs and manufacturing data and after Fed Chair Jerome Powell spoke of 'balanced' risks.
